Vaastav
Feeling a bit bored, I ordered these 2 online. Due to me being in an Orange Zone, these were delivered fairly quickly. The Sd.Kfz was cheap and included PE mesh and an aluminium barrel for the 2cm KwK, a nice deal and I felt it would go nicely with the Horch as a desert pair. For the weathering etc, I will be taking special inspiration from John Masters' 222 (I wonder how he gets anything done in that scale... His eyes are going for sure, while his sanity has already thrown up its hands at the sizes of models it has to work with.) The 2 boxes: The box shots: 1st is Horch & 2nd is 222 The light grey sprue is extra drums and Jerry cans. Sprue shots: Horch: 222 Please tell me what you think.
robw_uk
have a soft spot for the 222 - I enjoyed building mine (not Tamiya) so look forward to seeing your progress
Foxbat
Should be an interesting build, I will follow along. As an aside, both these were built on the same chassis as the Germans tried (without much success) to rationalise their vehicle fleet and come up with standard designs. Ernst
Cool duo, I've build the 222 many years ago. They make an excellent pair. Cheers, Ernst

Vaastav
Further update: I finished the body work and moved to the turret. Tamiya provided PE Mesh for the turret & for the first time, I used some PE Please do tell me what the PE work is like, as I think I made a bit of a hash of it. Also , made the figure, and as he sits well enough will be using him.
Ernst
Great progress, good to see tamiya supplied some proper DAK decals. No political affiliation here obviously. Is it just me or are modelers shifting a gear up? I can't advise you on PE, but this looks pretty neat. All I know from painting them is to avoid paint bubbles between the holes, I've had that with grilles and I pinched them. Cheers, Ernst.

I am doing the 222 as an Afrika Korps one as well, maybe a dio with the Horch. Any advice?

It's been a long time since I've build any diorama's so any advice is probably outdated. Diorama's used to be quite big in relation to what's actually happening in the scene. These vignettes I see here on britmodeler are often compact and have a focused composition to them. It is on the back of my mind but I decided for myself to learn figure painting first, partly because I keep struggling with canvas gun mantlet covers but also to add a human touch to a model. Vaastav
Building is finished. Painting and application of decals was done. Once again I apologize for the horrendous shade, but as it is a concoction of my own invention (I don't have any readymade desert yellow) I have to play it by ear. I also did the figure, to the best of my ability, seeing as I am not too skilled in figure painting. Anyone with tips please PM me. Foxbat
1 hour ago, Vaastav said: Does anyone have any advice on weathering desert vehicles? A few basics - dust storms will affect surface paint so primer could be showing through, but there isn't a lot of water about so there will be no rust. That same dust will be lighter than the paint, and it gets everywhere but falls off vertical or moving surfaces. Upper surfaces exposed to the desert sun will fade faster than ones more usually in shadow, especially on your 222, but I don't know if they usually survived long enough for that to make a big difference. Have a look at some of the other recent builds on here for inspiration - there's a couple of Matildas and an Sd.Kfz 234 that will give some good pointers. Vaastav
I gave the Horch a drybrushing with Gunmetal, to try and simulate the sort of sandblasting a vehicle gets in the desert. I know it looks a bit overenthusiastic, but it will be toned down later with washes and dust and appeals to the powers above.
Bullbasket
It looks good Vaastav. You can add rust in small amounts as although there is very little (if any) rain in the N.African desert, there is some moisture at night because the temperature can drop below zero, causing condensation. Vaastav
Hello all. Update time. I made (and painted) the Horch's driver. Including hand painting the camo. (Please tell me I got it right) The 222 was also finished up in a dusty & worn appearance. The driver of the Horch And.. as a bonus for those who stayed inside and helped fight corona (What else are modellers expected to do anyway when they have time. Go out?) : Its a shelf I made for my models, as space was a bit short once again, and everyone else is not allowing me to put any more in their rooms (the rotters)
