Airfix B-24J Liberator

Recommended Posts

I would like to jump in to this GB with this old kit.

I can't remember exactly when I built it but i would be about 12/13 which is when I became more interested in the hobby.

Strangely although I built the odd fighter I was more interested in bombers, there just seemed to be more Varity of types to me at the time.

I think this was the first i made, although I don't think I painted it at the time.

Hopefully I will be useing these decals although I am tempted to try to use the original ones, which although having yellowed a bit are still in good condition, so we shall see later.

Thanks for looking.

OK folks, I've started, just the cockpit, gun turrets and a bit of interior.

Fitment is as expected for a boxing from 1975(i was 5!!) but so far nothing that can't be dealt with, though putting the 2 fuselage halves together is allways a bit of a challenge.

Painting the figures with citadel contrast paints and so look OK.

Thats all for now, thanks for looking,

Yeah thats 2 for the dragon decals, they look fabulous.
if you go for the kit decals the old ‘ leave them out in the sun ‘ trick might help to de-yellow them.

have you decided what method you’ll use for the bare metal finish?

Still undecided about the decals, I think it will be a a spur of the moment thing at the end.

Well as for the bare metal finish I have options of a hairy stick or dust off the airbrus and try to murder some sence out of that, the last time I used it I launched it into next doors garden, thats 50yrds away. I had to go and ask for it back, a bit imbarasing!!!! ooops

There is a B-24 flying with a replica of the Dragon artwork today. Surprised no one freaked out about it yet really. I made my own years ago painting it myself, but i painted both sides. Didn't know the mural was only on one side. Of course, awhile later the decal set came out. This was one of my first kits to. I had the one with the green and yellow stripes. It takes 13 1/2 Canadian pennies to hold the nose down. With a bit of work this kit can be quite nice. I never looked to see the reviews on it yet.

Hi,

When I built the kit originally just after it was released, it was in OD over gray as per the box. Later I stripped it, painted it natural metal and bought a set of Microscale decals - yes it is "the Dragon and his Tail" and it still looks pretty good after all these years.

Good luck with the build.

Well there was a little excitement last night as the tweezers holding the 2 ball turret guns went ping and launched the offending items into god knows where. All I know is the carpet monster 👾 is now a bit fatter than before.

Not sure how this is going to be rectified, but a big rummage in the bits box.

its gone ! let the carpet monster enjoy his treat, stretched sprue should be a good place to make a start on the replacement, I've  found airfix plastic isn't  the best for stretching to a pre determined diameter(as near as) new kit revell sprue is tops ,and easier to work

Hi G,

I am following this build from now on, as I started the same kit boxing possibly some two decades ago, and I did not go far!!! Still in the stash, begging to be finished... Did buy a decal sheet of "Parson's chariot" and that is the one I will finish it in, one day... Except that there is only one nose art and I suspect there were one on each side!

The dragon is a given as far as I am concerned!

Re the carpet monster, take solace in the knowledge that they do sometime regurgitate their prey, especially if you scare them bad (like a snake). I recently found a tiny piece of my Stuka swallowed whole two months previously! This is when a glacier-like progress is an advantage!

Enjoy!

Victory is MINE!!!!!! I have run the carpit monster and in true British fashion gave the cad/bounder a jolly good thrashing, the guns have been coughed up!!!! Huzzah!!

I have to agree with JR that a slower moving project can be beneficial.

I present the evidence!!

Sorry for the slow progress but sadly work has to come first(I don't see why) but hopefully back on it this weekend.

Thanks for looking,

G

I had that kit too! Man, I tossed the finished model out some years back in a big clean up and the minute it was irretrievable, I regretted it.

Watching with great nostalgia - I made this in our cold unheated downstairs part of the house when I was about 12 and really tried hard - plasticine for filler on the top and I made al the moving parts work properly. I used to fly it around the backyard escorted by my Matchbox Saab Viggen.

Such great memories!

(goes to ebay to try to track down same kit...)
