Thanks Steve, how’re the tracks going on your beast?

 

End of the month update - have caught up from where I was at the start of the month!

Not much opportunity to get things done on the Bushmaster, lately. 

That said, managed to print the updated instrument panel, inclusive of the control screen for the remote weapon station, and have a crack at laser cutting the instrument panel shroud.

Need to figure out why only the holes at the ends are cutting as ovals.

The laser cutter is also getting a workout cutting the doors for the sponson stowage.

Looking forward to tackling the interior prints & painting.

Printed the updated radio rack & power distribution tower. These are located on the left side of the interior, behind the commander’s seat and in front of seats arrayed along the left side of the vehicle. 
 

Fresh off the printer, with support structures in place:

Support materials removed (right). Radio rack to the left. The finish of the print will be improved using filler primer & sanding.

Here’s a cross section of a failed print on the right. As can be seen, only the faces of the print are finished to a high standard & the bodies themselves aren’t solid. The amount of infill is determined before printing. Generally, I use denser infill for the structural parts & less infill for interior features.

The aircon tower is on the printer atm, which will be located behind the driver on the right hand side of the vehicle.

I think I’ve finally nutted out how to do the tracks although I haven’t finished them yet.

It’s always a good moment when the model first unmistakably looks like the subject.

The clearing of the print backlog continues. 
 

The seat backs & mounts have been run up. The inward-facing seats have a large “wing” oriented toward the front of the vehicle to protect occupants from a sudden deceleration. So, left up the top, right down the bottom.

With the mounts added to the lower hull, we’re left with this:

The spare wheel mount was designed, printed, & mounted to the rear of the hull.

Was fortunate to be given the opportunity to brief on the Bushmaster (1:1 scale) at the Australian War Memorial last week - and was filmed doing it! 
 

Thought this pic of the destroyed 1:1 scale with my mug next to it may be of interest to the forum.

Got to work on the stowage so I could procrastinate a little longer on the suspension!

 

First up is the twin packs of 84mm ammunition & the associated external rack:

Then the stowage trunks.

Then reprints of the water jerries, POL Jerry, & 5 x “combat ration one man” (CR1M) boxes for the camouflage net stowage box.

Test placement on the combat Winnebago with the blue force tracker antenna (white square) plus the X-wing satcom antenna & ground plane.

Well, with the new round of lockdowns & similar, there’s been some time to do some more design. 
 

The updated winch & fuel tank.

The relationship between these parts should facilitate a good fit.

Also started on the transmission portion of the suspension, which, apart from orientation, is common to front & rear axles.

This has been printed at 50% infill density for added strength.

The two parallel ridges on the top part of this piece interface with two recessed channels in the hull itself.

A recess for a M6 nut was included on the underside which will allow mounting and will take the majority of the weight of the completed model. 
 

Lastly, updated the A-frame model so that it can be printed in one piece.

Happy 2021!

 

Just finished off the suspension design & print. I’d been putting it off until I was comfortable enough with the CAD program to replicate the suspension.

And finished with a fit check of the fuel tank & winch.

Finishing both the suspension & assembly blocks have allowed me to verify the ride height and get an overall feel for the look of the truck.

The front & spare wheel hubs are correct for the Bushamster ;) but the rear one here is a temporary one stolen from the M-ATV kit.

The rear step & steering arms are next in line for printing.

Test of concept for the 12mm MDF base & the M6x40mm attachment points.

Offset the hubs by ~2.5mm to account for a design oversight.

Designed & printed the wire cutters on either top corner of the windscreen.

Finally with cradles and a MAG58 (aka M240/L7 GPMG) from shapeways.

A little bit more done prior to heading back to work. 
 

Finalised the swing mount designs.

There’s two ammunition racks on the cradle to account for either 5.56 or 7.62 mm ammunition boxes.

Anyone else build on the basis of a guess/assumption & then have to do a do-over?

 

I’d assumed a common cradle for the remote/protected weapon station fitment of the medium (7.62) & heavy (12.7mm/.50 cal) machine guns. Yeah, nah.

It’s been a while. Since the last update, I’ve brought my resin printer online. The resolution is significantly better than the filament printer, however the build plate size is significantly smaller. 
 

To leverage the additional capabilities of the resin printer, I updated the CAD. Here are the wire cutters. spacer.png
