1/144 Hi Mock Custom Build

Recommended Posts

Thanks! Another update coming later, I've started chipping the rocket tubes and got his other arm on.

Typical though I've just run out if primer so need to venture out into the badlands for some halfords grey!

Time for a small update

Used a piece of sponge and some burnt umber acrylic paint to add the paint chips to the gun magazine and rocket tubes

With that done I got the magazine glued in place, oh and I also got the other arm stuck on

I still need to get a can of primer so cant start any of the other bits of him quite yet, so for now I'll start on the pigment stage for the torso, I'll enhance the rust and add some shadows and grime. So thats up next.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Okay so I sat down and had mess about with my mig pigment powders.

49999659027_b6cbb5a0f4_c.jpgIMG_20200612_185457 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I've got three shades of rust and my favourite pigment that I use on all my models, graveyard dirt, which is great for adding dirt and shadow.

Its always a swine getting a good impression of what they look like in photos so I've done a before photo below to help show up what I've done.

49999659102_15a494c24f_c.jpgIMG_20200612_185626 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

As it is the rust is good but in terms of tone is a little flat and looks a little samey which makes the shoulder detail blend in a bit too much. So what I do is try to add shadows, and also enhance the rust patches and the variance. I use graveyard dirt for the shadows, its a very dark brown, and then build up tones of rust using the three different shades and end up with the below result.

49998886223_58b1a3a26c_c.jpgIMG_20200612_190128 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Heres another angle after I've worked on the rest of the arm, and it also serves as a before photo for torso which I treat in the same way. Going around details and areas of shadow with the graveyard dirt and going over the rust and the paint work again to help vreak it up and add a little grime.

Then I finished up the other arm, making an effort to do it a bit differently than the other

Pretty pleased with how that went, I love working with pigments! And doing this I just realised that I still to add a bit more paint to the chair, and I'll grab some primer and start on the other bits next too.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Right just a small update, I actually ventured out and grabbed some primer from Halfords which meant I can get the lower body bits started.

So after priming them all I mixed up another custom rust colour (just flat brown with plenty of orange in it) so its a different shade from the rest of the undercoats for variance.

50017175677_677cf1ec10_c.jpgIMG_20200617_191822 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I also just did a little bit of brushwork on the guys chair just so it doesn't look so flat

50016388968_b8efa5b121_c.jpgIMG_20200617_191831 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And I got the pigments done on the rocket tubes, I used graveyard dirt for grime and shadow, and then some black smoke for the business ends. Kept it a bit heavier on the top tube as that one will have no rocket in as its been fired; think I forgot to say these are from a 1/20 Ma.k Gans walker and I do have the rockets that go inside them, just have to dig them out the spares box.

Next up once thats dry I'll get more salt and hairspray out for the next round of rustification!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Thanks Pete, yeah that word just seemed to fit!

I've done a few Ma.k models and modded most of them so do have a few choice pieces here and there old bean; but your spares box must be a bottomless pit compared to mine with all the cool builds you've squeezed out of it!

Many thanks. The bottom is glanced from time to time nowadays, thanks to the furlough, though I may be back at work at the end of next week*.

I have a batch of bits on the way to top things up a bit, but always need more.

I do have some real Ma.k kits, but I find that I enjoy the scratchbuilding too much!

Yeah it's good making stuff from scratch, I used to spend a lot of time on the Maschinen Krueger forum when I was building kits, tons of cool stuff on there but I could never come up with a design I was happy with (we're always our biggest critics!)

I'm fact I still have 2 academy Apache's that I got with the idea of making a super Jerry type walker with a 1/20 figure in the cockpit but just got caught up in other builds, I'll have to resurrect that idea at some point

Yes please! I have a 1/48th Apache. I also had a very small Hughes 500 (Hasegawa coin series 1/85th) delivered today which may get legs.

That sounds cool, and yeah maybe we can start a trend of apache mod builds!

Time for an update!

I've been getting the lower body rust sorted out, so it was time to grab the salt and the hairspray again.

50049955761_bd8207ff8c_c.jpgIMG_20200621_124935 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I then gave it a blast with a dark black brown and then orange as before.

50049386198_779e07ecbb_c.jpgIMG_20200627_111406 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

After washing it off I was initially a bit dissapointed as I thought it didn't look like as much paint had come through the salt as the first time, but thankfully it was just because it was wet. Once it had dried it looked a lot better as you could see more of the colour.

Then when that was all dry I got out some bits of sponge and started to add some colour, I started with the waist section adding the same light and dark blues that I used on the top section.

50049918211_0537fa4c21_c.jpgIMG_20200626_145145 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then used the darker blue for the hip sections, again just trying to dab it around trying to keep it as natural and random as possible

50050169857_14182c83c8_c.jpgIMG_20200626_145713 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then for the upper leg section I used the warm grey I used on the same section on the arm

50049349178_b761ab893e_c.jpgIMG_20200626_151106 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

For the legs I used the light blue and then coloured the small side panels in the darker blue

50049917651_6b7168bef7_c.jpgIMG_20200626_152712 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then used the same blues for the feet but used a much darker one for the lower section

50049348563_2440432363_c.jpgIMG_20200626_153432 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

For the knee joint bit I decided not to use the salt for these pieces, you dont see much of them anyway so I instead used a sponge to add on the rust colours I'd used for the other bits to get a similar but different looking style of rust.

Once that was all dry I decided to get it all together

Next up I'll get the rust pigments out for the lower body, and I'll start to add some rust streaks to the whole thing with some oil paint then the whole thing can be sealed with dullcote.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Thanks Brian! Just for the heck of it I'm seriously considering a small snow covered base, and then possibly adding some snow and Frost effects on him as well

Blimey time for a very small update!

I was taken out of furlough last week and dropped right in the deep end with a ton of stressful rush jobs, so been too tired to model. But got a chance to get in the shed today and finish the rust pigments on the lower body.

Right work has been sapping what little energy I have left after diy and painting, but I finally managed to put in some shed time!

I mixed up a rusty brown using some windsor newton burnt sienna and cadmium yellow and red oil paint. and after getting it really thin with some white spirit I brushed on some streaks.

I try not to go too crazy with streaks as it can very quickly go from a nice subtle effect to a pin stripe mess!

50148143137_1250c8010c_c.jpgIMG_20200721_190059 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I gave it a blast of dulcote to kill the sheen and even it out.

50147906236_b8e22a5263_c.jpgIMG_20200721_191450 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Pretty happy with that, I haven't put them everywhere, mainly focused on his chest and shoulders as they are at the top, and did a little on his legs keeping it asymmetrical as possible (I didn't want both legs/arms to look the same

And now its all been sealed with dullcote I got my soldier glued in

50147906091_3cf26dbd4b_c.jpgIMG_20200721_191809 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Only other small jobs I did for now was to get the little piston sorted which will support the rocket tubes, using alclad aluminium and some green enamel paint

50148142747_32190e1517_c.jpgIMG_20200721_193621 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And primed a couple of satchels ready for paint which are going to be glued onto his shins as extra stowage.

50147380168_244a7cfcb1_c.jpgIMG_20200721_193610 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So thats it for now, next up I'll get the rocket tubes on and paint the satchels.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Update time!

Started the shed session by getting the rocket tubes in place, I mixed together some greenstuff to go in the hole where the piston goes into the rockets and the shoulder to hold it in and look like rubber seals.

50227808123_1df9297137_c.jpgIMG_20200813_093909 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

50227808033_41bb273e43_c.jpgIMG_20200813_094010 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Whilst that all dried I dug out the rockets that fit in the tubes from the spares box and tidied them up a bit then gave them a coat of white paint

50227808033_41bb273e43_c.jpgIMG_20200813_094010 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

50228669302_ac0342ebac_c.jpgIMG_20200814_154925 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

They got two coats of white (I didn't go crazy painting the whole thing as you only see the end bits) then I shaded them slightly with some graveyard dirt pigmentg powder then dipped the ends in blue gloss paint for a bit of detail.

50229105337_1ed858218a_c.jpgIMG_20200815_141305 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

50228242033_d6a190cce4_c.jpgIMG_20200815_141439 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I painted the greenstuff bits black so they look like seals

50228449331_3ee5b4246c_c.jpgIMG_20200814_154931 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Next I took a look at the shield, to be honmest I was pretty unhappy with it after I got the green sponged on, I think its just becaus eht egreen was a little light so it all looks a little equal in tone comparison with the rust.

50228669172_25b06ffc80_c.jpgIMG_20200814_155443 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So using rust pigment powders I want to increase the contrast and break it up a little to add more variance, also a good tip for rusty bits of metal that are being bashed about is to use graphite where they have had the rust scraped off.

So I also got out a pencil to add the scraped off rust sheen to the tips of the shield and to some other bits.

50227807468_dd9a40e868_c.jpgIMG_20200814_161445 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Really pleased with it now, so I glued it in place on the arm, its actually only glued on to his knuckle guard so there still a fair bit of poseability which is cool.

50228668777_a73f775963_c.jpgIMG_20200814_192114 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I was losing the light so I took a couple of outdoor pics

50227807218_59a02cd792_c.jpgIMG_20200814_192306 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Only other small thing I did was to paint the two little bags I'm going to stick on his shins a base green colour

50228972126_669a13b8fa_c.jpgIMG_20200815_140638 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So next up I'll get the bags sorted, glue in the rockets and its time to make a start on his back pack too.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)
