Hunter Rose
Okay so now my sculpture project is done I am planning on doing another sculpture, but before that I just want to do a bit of "normal" modelling! IMG_20200511_112948 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I really like the Hi Mock, as soon as I saw it I really wanted one and after doing a build for a friend I took two of them and the weapon set as payment and they've been sat in my stash ever since. The plan for this custom build is to build it as a 1/35 mech; first time I saw one I thought it would be cool to leave off the dome head and have an exposed pilot figure, so thats what I'm going top do. And its been a very long time since I mucked about with rust effects, so this is going to be a very weathered rusty mech with worn paint and chips galore! First thing I did, just to get a feel for the mech and whats possible, was to snip it all from the sprue tidy up the nubs with a scalpel and sandpaper then snap it together. For a lot of the bits I know I'll probably be taking apart again I reamed out the connector holes so the dont go together too tight. IMG_20200513_102126 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200511_205739 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200512_160442 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200512_143018 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200512_143229 by Nick Frost, on Flickr But the main weapon Im definitely interested in is the mini gun IMG_20200513_101544 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200513_101610 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Sooo my thoughts so far are that that I'm thinking the chain gun is a bit bulky so I'm going to lose a hand and have half the barrel sticking directly out of his wrist with one of the ammo drums on the side, and a shield for the other arm. For now though I want to sort out a pilot figure which I'll bash and sculpt, so next up I'll start cutting out a recess into his chest through the neck to make a cockpit. Thanks for looking, more soon

Hunter Rose
Cheers Brian! Done a bit more on this today, started by taking a look at how I'll need to go about getting the pilot in and creating a cockpit tub. First thing I have to do is remove the large central bit that goes through the middle of the chest section with the abdomens ball joint. IMG_20200515_120008 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I'd already checked that removing it doesn't impact how the abdomen connects, I'll just glue that bit to the underside of the chest, which only affects the movability which Im not bothered about. So I started drilling some holes to get it out. IMG_20200515_120044 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200515_152659 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And after cutting a bit with my scalpel I wrenched it out, and then carved it smooth and used a rat tile file to try and keep it neat IMG_20200515_122333 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200515_154208 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200515_155122 by Nick Frost, on Flickr At this point I'd been scratching my head on exactly how to remove the slight lip that was left and keep it from looking too rough, but then the modelling gods smiled upon me and these metal rings I have fit perfectly! IMG_20200516_112340 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So now thats solved that problem and made it look even better. But I now wanted to make the hole in the grey chest piece bigger to allow more room for a figure to fit in, so after marking it out I again used my scalpel to just carve material away to enlarge the opening while using the rat tail file to smooth it out. IMG_20200516_113132 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200516_113250 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200516_113847 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And you can see in the background of that photo I also had a dig through the spares bin and grabbed out a shield left over from a 1/100 RGM-79 gundam. I had this in mind from the start for this project as I really love the shield design. IMG_20200516_112320 by Nick Frost, on Flickr While I was in there I grabbed out some 1/35 german infantry bits to make a pilot figure. IMG_20200515_160545 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I was going to use a resin head, I have some 1/35 white resin heads from Legend, but they seemed small compared to the infantry bodies I have, which is odd because I used these same figures and resin heads to make a fisherman jumping into a river for my Hornethopter diorama. So thats a bit weird, maybe they've shrunk??? Anyway I'm just going to use one of the heads from the soldier kit, they are actually pretty well moulded, and I may end up covering most of the face with a helmet/mask so its not too important. I have sanded all the detail off one of the torso's in readiness to add details with some putty. IMG_20200516_121340 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And he also will need somewhere to sit, so while I had the spares out I nabbed a seat from a pod racer kit (the kitbashers friend!) which is actually 1/32 I think, but thats fine as its only for his seat so not noticeable really IMG_20200516_114018 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Sawed the sides off and carved it down, and then put in place and it actually fits pretty well. IMG_20200516_114018 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200516_114414 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200516_115105 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200516_140216 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats where I'm up to, next up I'll continue sorting out the cockpit and modding a figure so sit in there. Pete in Lincs
Well, I read rust and paint chips, and thought you were heading down the kreiger road. Then I saw that Hammer. I do like where you're going with this and I'll take a seat at the front by the bowl of complimentary peanuts.* *They said nice things about you BTW. 1
Hunter Rose
Cheers Pete! (and thank the peanuts too!!) Yeah it's not a very Ma.k looking subject, i must admit every time I see your krieger stuff it makes me miss the 1/20 world of Ma.k haven't done one of those kits in ages. The falke is still on my wishlist and I'd love to build another Krote
Pete in Lincs
I've got another 1/20th Falke scratchbuild coming up sometime soon. Once I've finished the Eagle refurbs I have a choice of two other builds.

Once I've finished the Eagle refurbs I have a choice of two other builds. Oh Nice! I'll definitely be excited to see that 😎 Aaaand its time for an update! Been working on the figure today, its been a while since I did some bashing butchery to make one figure out of a few and I always enjoy it! Needed to give my torso a bit of a waist to lift him to the correct level when he's sitting in the cockpit, so glued two of the legs from the infantry set together and grabbed my razor saw. IMG_20200516_115630 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200517_143214 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And after gluing them together I checked the look to make sure I was happy with how it looked IMG_20200518_122841 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I had a think about how I wanted him posing, I was thinking about just having him sitting as if he's driving it, but then I thought I wanted something a bit different and more natural. I want him to be leaning on the edge of the cockpit as if hes stopped to look at something, or just posing! So I sifted through a bunch of arms and after some cutting to fit I came up with this. IMG_20200518_133843 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200518_134754 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Wasn't quite happy with the left arm though, it being a fist it didn't seem relaxed enough and just didn't look right, so I chopped off a hand that was in a much better pose and glued it in place. IMG_20200518_134944 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200518_135139 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So much happier with how that looks, and when I put it in place its just how I was hoping it would look. IMG_20200518_141428 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then it was time to break out the greenstuff, started on his helmet, I used one of the german ones from the infantry set as I knew it would fit his head nicely. Used a bit of putty to try and hide the obvius shape of a german helmet, and stuck on a set of pouches. I dont know what theyre supposed to be but it looks good to me! IMG_20200518_150038 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And gave it a bit of a lip IMG_20200518_202147 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I rolled out a thin bit and started on his uniform and body armour. IMG_20200518_202425 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200518_202601 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I started roughing out the collar and defining the waist, and then when I was happy I added another bit for some sort of bullet proof armour. IMG_20200518_203133 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200518_203603 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I added some detail IMG_20200518_203912 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And added some shoulder pads IMG_20200518_204340 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Overall I'm pretty pleased with him so far, next up I'll carry on adding details and I'll glue the helmet on him. Hunter Rose
Done some more on the figure, I got the greenstuff out again and gave him some back armour. IMG_20200519_130327 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I trimmed his cuffs down in readiness of adding a band to suggest gloves, and I also gave him some elbow pads. I also whacked his helmet on just to get an impression of the whole look. IMG_20200519_195500 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200519_202209 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200519_202225 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200519_202317 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Aaaan thats him done. Seriously chuffed with his look, and at how quickly he came together! Only other thing today was while I had the greenstuff out I used some of it to smooth over the ugly gap inside the cockpit rim. IMG_20200519_130548 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200519_131022 by Nick Frost, on Flickr My plan is to be able to have the figure so he can be painted seperately and dropped in after the torso has also been painted, but before I can do that I want to get the back pack sorted. I want a back pack that is full of stowage, and I'm hoping to use the same back half of the existing back pack just so the fittings will tally up nicely. So I'll look at that next, and I may even get some paint on the pilot! Thanks for looking, more soon
Hunter Rose
Okay time to upload some progress, its funny these days I have lots of modelling time but its the taking to to update that I'm slower with! Right so I just wanted to get the little figure done, so now all the details are on I blasted him with primer IMG_20200520_191821 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then after giving his face a base coat of flesh colour, I found a pair of goggles form a 1/35 sas jeep build that never happened (a lot of the stowage the robot is going the upgrade set I got for that kit) which was good because 1. the look good and 2. painting 1/35 eyes is a nightmare! IMG_20200522_115057 by Nick Frost, on Flickr After that I decided to get the base colour for the uniform on, I used humbrol 31 which is a greeny grey IMG_20200522_115857 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I then dry brushed the whole thing after adding a bit of white to the colour. IMG_20200522_115857 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200522_185926 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I decided to paint the lenses of his goggles with a gloss red and did a little more on the flesh colour, and painted the armor bits with 53 metallic grey. Although I wanted to make him a platoon leader/captain or something so I gave him a blue shoulder pad as an extra detail IMG_20200522_190702 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200522_193903 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200523_100855 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200523_100908 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I added some brown details for straps and pouches IMG_20200523_100908 by Nick Frost, on FlickrIMG_20200523_102724 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then after a bit more dry burshing here and there as a last little detail I put a decal 42 on hisblue shoulder armour. IMG_20200523_103708 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And thats him pretty much done IMG_20200523_111722 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Next up I'm going to get the seams on the torso sorted and get his seat done and make a start on the rusty paint job Thanks for looking, more soon

Hunter Rose
Just a quick little update, just came out of the shed and feel pretty happy about the gun arm. I took the first section of the barrel of the chain gun, and after carving and filing the wrist hole to make it wider I got it to fit in snuggly. IMG_20200523_191426 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Which is good because the plan is to have the barrel and ammo magazine removable to make the paint stage easier and save on masking bits off. So I then carved down the rectangular peg to try and make it a tight fit into the forearm armour peg hole IMG_20200523_191735 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200523_193357 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And thats how it all looks when fit together IMG_20200523_192155 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Pretty pumped about that, it all came together really nicely. I've got some filler on the small side seams of the torso, and tomorrow when its dry I'm going to sand it down and prime it. I've also found some rocket tubes from a Ma.k Gans build that were spare so I'm currently thinking up a way to make them into a shoulder mounted weapon for him too. Thanks, it's funny you mention scope-dog as that's why I really like the hi mock, it looks really similar to it in design even in the cartoons they show it folds down and opens up in the same way. Also the rusty look I'm going for is similar to the first diorama I ever did which was a modified scopedog, it's those salt technique rust effects I want to do again
Hunter Rose
Time for some progress These are the rocket tubes I'm planning to mount on his shoulder IMG_20200524_155531 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I've cut some brass tube and rod for a piston which will form the mechanism that holds it up IMG_20200524_155513 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I drilled a hole for it in to locate into, and did a dry fit just to show how it looks IMG_20200525_135046 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Now I'm happy with that it still needed a little bit of filler, as did some of the arm bits so whacked that on in readyness of sanding IMG_20200524_155840 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200524_160826 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Haven't put any yet on the shoulder bits, as they and the hip bits are going to get a stippled coating of filler all over to give a cast metal look. Other thing I've done is to the shoulder bits is to remove the domed bit off the side and add a greeblie to just break the shape up and add detail IMG_20200525_135633 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200525_135645 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I have a use for the shoulder bit im not using, there are some chunky round bits that go on the waist of the original kit, I'll swap them with the rounder part from the shoulder as I think it looks better IMG_20200524_155932 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200524_155945 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats where its at for now, next I'll sand down the filler and get the primer out. Hunter Rose
OKay update time! The gardens kept me pretty busy but I've finally had time to get in the shed. Started by adding a couple of details to the shield and torso section, just added a couple of nuts to the top and 4 big bolt heads to the shield as it had a really plain look at the top and I also cut the corners off to give a nice angled shape to it too. IMG_20200529_203647 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200603_192551 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Also I brushed over some filler on to the shoulder and hip bits with a tooth brush to add texture, so that once dry I can sand it down a bit to add a rough cast look. IMG_20200529_201022 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200529_202015 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200603_193113 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Once that was dry I gave it a light sanding all over and then primed all the bits I've done so far. IMG_20200602_134519 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I want this mech to have a repurposed look, so the large rocket tubes and the gun barrel and magazine will look much newer. To also help with this I'm going to give them a different colour than the rest with a military looking green as the base. IMG_20200605_201736 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200605_201809 by Nick Frost, on Flickr They'll still have paint chips but as they will be lighter I;ll just sponge them on after. Then I added my rusty undercoat in readyness for the salt rust effect I'm going to use IMG_20200605_201825 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200605_201836 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I also got the gun barrel sorted too, I gave it a black gloss undercoat followed by an airframe aluminium base coat which was oversprayed with steel. The final touch was to give the ends and base of the barrels a light blast of pale gold, partly to add a kind of burnt metal effect but mostly because I think it looks good and more intresting than just a plain shade of metal. IMG_20200605_203151 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200605_203205 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I took two photos because I always find it hard to capture the subtleness of the finish to alclad paints, especially in the low light. So thats where I'm up to now, the next step is to coat the rust bits with a clearcoat so I can then use one of my favourite rust techniques. You spray your bits in hairspray and cover the whole bit in salt (I use kosher salt as it has flatter flakes) then spray over randomly with a dark rust colour and then orange. Once its dry and you wash the salt off and where the paint has gone through the gaps it creates some really nice textured rust finishes, especially when accentuated with pigments. So thats all to come! Thanks for looking, more soon

Hunter Rose
Just left the shed and just had to get on here and update, been mucking about with rust and very happy!! To start with I thought my rust base colour was a touch dark and a little flat, so I gave all the bits a going over here and there with a lighter orange brown and then a very orange brown to give slight variance and brighten it a bit. IMG_20200607_135359 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_135422 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_135449 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then Just to be on the safe side to protect the paint a bit I gave it a blast of dulcote and with that done and dry it was time to break out the salt and the hairspray IMG_20200607_190727 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I use kosher salt for this, simply because the have flatter flakes which stick better and the flakes are very random in size which helps with the randomness of the patches it leaves. Theres a few variations on how people use the salt technique for rust; some paint a varied rust finish first, then add the harspray and salt before adding the top colour so it looks like the paint is coming off. However what I like to do is use the salt technique before you get to that point to give a random rusty texture to work with as your base, this gives a superior rust finish to anything you'll achieve with an airbrush and it looks great especially if you want to leave large areas of rust exposed. So the first thing I do is spray each bit with cheap hairspray and cover it liberally with salt. IMG_20200607_190940 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_191438 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And then I first mixed up a dark black brown IMG_20200607_191615 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I sprayed this randomly over the top of all the bits IMG_20200607_192121 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And after that I sprayed over pure orange in some spots IMG_20200607_192947 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_192954 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then it was the exciting bit, I went in the kitchen armed with a toothbrush and rinsed it all off under a tap. I have to say I was pretty nervous doing this as I haven't done this technique for maybe 10 years (thats why the hairspray and salt looked so dusty and dirty on top!) But I was very happy when I washed it off, incidentally I only left the paint for around 5-10 minutes before doing this, apparently the salt can eat away at your paint if you leave it too long. IMG_20200607_194947 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_195003 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_195029 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_195044 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_195100 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_195121 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_195305 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_195341 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_195353 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_195416 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200607_195549 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I took a few photos as the light was going a bit and I wanted to make sure I gave a good impression of how it looks. The nice thing thats happened as well is where the salt has started to eat into the matte varnish I put on there it has given a slight roughness which adds to the textured finish. I will also be enhancing the rust with pigments once I've added all the top colour. At this point I'm not totally sure what I'm going to do with the paint now, I could use the salt method again with a top colour, or sponge some top colour on in a reverse chipping fashion or leave it bare rust. I'm thinking I'll probably do all 3, the elbow joints are definitely being left bare rust and maybe one of the forearms, I just want it to look as "repurposed" as possible. So next up I'll start adding the top colour, and I'll start adding some paint chips to the green rocket tubes and magazine. Thanks for looking, more soon

Hunter Rose
Had another productive shed session, fueled by tea and a chocolate bar! I decided that even if it seems over the top or makes no sense I want this mech to be a total rust bucket, basically it was found and it worked, so it had some weapons added and the budget didn't cover new paint (this is WAR soldier, not a beauty pagent!) so I'm just going to use a bit of sponge to add the top coat of colour to ensure I can get a lot of the rust showing through with more control than you get with the salt method. Started by getting ripping a bit of my sponge from my fine sponge stash, my tweezers and a duck egg blue pot of enamel paint IMG_20200608_160534 by Nick Frost, on Flickr This was the first bit I did IMG_20200608_161103 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Added more of the blue to his robo abs IMG_20200608_161116 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then to break it up a bit I used a darker mid blue on the lower chest and side bits, and around his middle I used a warm light gray IMG_20200608_163756 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200608_163805 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then the shoulder bits in the light blue IMG_20200608_163824 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200608_163849 by Nick Frost, on Flickr The upper arm bits were done in the light warm grey IMG_20200608_163859 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200608_163906 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And the hand, left the fingers bare, I'll probably rub some graphite on them late to give them a dull scraped off rust sheen IMG_20200608_193022 by Nick Frost, on Flickr While I had the hairy sticks and enamels out, I hand painted the details on the rocket tube, and painted the divider bit on the barrels matte black IMG_20200608_193043 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200608_194628 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I also painted the inside of the cab with a dark brown, and gave the chair an initial mid brown coat of paint IMG_20200608_195515 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Now at this point I really couldn't resisit getting the gun arm together and connected IMG_20200608_195510 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20200608_195528 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Next up I'll get the chipping on the magazine done, and I'll do the same for the rocket tubes. Thanks for looking, more soon
