Christer A
Is there any other source for MW-1 pods other than the Hobbyboss IDS kit? I'm guessing that there must've been some handy guy that made a resin example but I can't find any. Or is the demand just there for RAF Tonkas and Gulf War weapons? The Tornado GB starts in September and one wants to be suitable prepared fort it 😎
whiskey
I'm almost 100% sure HaHen made one in 1/48.

Not sure if it was really wotking as advertised either! Photo sure looks impressive though!
Slater
I believe that these all had to be destroyed due to Treaty obligations (cluster munitions). One of the old Revell 1/32 Tornado kits included a MW-1.

Maybe I could have a go at designing one, and then 3D-print it? 1

Looking at the 1/72 one included in the old Esci kit, the shapes are pretty simple, with a lot of flat surfaces. Building one from good old plasticard looks very feasible. You could get the dimensions from someone with the HB kit, failing that I can take these from the Esci parts.

Slater
Seems like you see more aftermarket JP233's than MW-1's.

Then until a month ago there also only was the long oop Paragon one... And the JP233 was used in anger, by the hugely popular dessert pink RAF during thr first war against Iraq. The MW-1 was not used anywhere, not even for training it seems still an interesting weapon and loadout! Looks like the were also mounted on a Phantom for development purposes for those of you who want more variation!
coneheadff
A former colleague spent more than four years in Holloman with the Luftwaffe. He said that they loaded them to Tornados for training missions. So probably the desert was the only thing they hit with it
Shaun
In Resin this would be a big lump, i got a pair of JP233 from Eduard this week and they are large and quite heavy...and as long as 1/72 Spitfire. The 1/48th Hobby boss did come with a MW1 and i'd rather hang that under a Tornado due to weight on the models undercarrage.
Slater
Hang one under a model Eurofighter and call it a MW-2. That should turn a few heads.
Christer A
I'm seriously considering CAD and 3D printing, since the thought of aligning 116 holes in both sides seems very unappealing. Such print could be made hollow (isch) so should not weigh too much. Brass landing gear for tonkas? Does that even exist? (White metal from SAC does not count) Edited May 10, 2020 by Christer A
junglejim
If you use Fusion 360, rectangular pattern should take care of most of the holes. I just whipped this up to try it out. Need better reference though.... :-0
Christer A
AFAIK it's split into four segments with 28 tubes in each, so it will need some more made up details. I haven't used Fusion 360, so I'll stick with Creo Parametrics, like Airfix uses
Christer A
One thing is for certain... This pod is HUGE! It's split into four segments, where the middle two are just a simple box shape with 28 tubes each. The nose area that I made a start of also needs 28 tubes, but here the spacing is weird due to the attempt to make the pod a little bit aerodynamic. There seems to be some sort of small shield/raincover/roof just above the top tubes, I guess to protect the fuselage from the launch cartridges? I need to add that as well. So far I spent an hour while commuting on this, so it's early days yet!
Christer A
Another day of commuting, another little progress.... I took a leap of faith and made the front and back segments identical, so that means I can speed up the work considerably. This is the current status Started to add some panel lines as well, and will add some rivets on the sides as well. We'll see how it looks.
exdraken
Not sure if symmetrical Was it even the same for all sub-munition types?
Christer A
The symmetrical question is an interesting one This old thread; shows pods that are very close to symmetrical. But what is actually correct I do not know! I've been unable to find a good side picture/drawing or similar of a pod in any configuration, so I do not know if there is a change depending on sub-munition.
exdraken
Found one of the scarcer rear end This one And a drawing, not symmetric I fancy building a green Luftwaffe Tornado with MW1 now and blame you! Christer A
That's a good photo! To me it looks like the rear end is the same as the front end? Edit: now I see the isometric drawing too. The furthest end seems to contain one column with 4 tubes too much? Edited May 14, 2020 by Christer A

Christer A
Well, I've got requests for pods in 48, 72 and 144 scale so once I get around to printing I'm sure we can figure something out. 3
