1/48 Airfix Defiant- 264 Squadron RAF March 1940

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks.

I hope we are all keeping safe and working through the stash.

I have a bit of a thing for the Defiant and have built another one which I really enjoyed. There's something about a Defiant that I absolutely love and have a plan to build many more.

The kit was the 1/48 Airfix NF 1 boxing but decided to do a Defiant in a day scheme prior to the outbreak of the war for something different to the norm. This one represents a machine of 264 Squadron in March 1940- this particular aircraft was later repainted with Type S Undersurfaces, and revised roundels and saw service over Dunkirk where my Great Uncle was evacuated. He might have seen this aircraft in the skies.

Paints used:

Mr Hobby Aqueuous White

Mr Hobby Aq. Flat Black

Tamiya Flat Red

Tamiya Flat Blue

Tamiya Sky Grey

Tamiya Cockpit Green

Tamiya Flat Yellow

Tamiya Nato Black

Tamiya Metallic Grey

AK Extreme Aluminium

Tamiya Clear Green

Tamiya Clear Red

Mr Finishing Surfacer Black

Washes and Oils:

Flory Dark Dirt

Flory Grime

Abteilung Black

Abt. Engine Grease

Abt. Sepia

Abt. Dust

AK Europe Earth Weathering Powders

Other items:

Home made masks using a Cricut and masking film for the Codes, Roundels and Serial Numbers

Rosie the riveter to add the rivets- not every single one is on there and they aren't 100% accurate but they add interest and that's good enough for me :-)

Enjoy the pics.

The weathering powders along the wing root aren't that stark in the flesh!

That's a great build. I have Airfix's 1/72 in the stash. Several years ago I tried to update their old 1/72 Defiant but gave up after a long and bitter struggle!

Very nice build. I like the way you depicted the engine exhaust affect on the upper wing surfaces. That's sharp!

Wow, so refreshing to see a day scheme Defiant. My favourite Defiant model I've seen, kudos to you. As a side note, what's the process behind the grass underneath? Or did you purchase it like that?

Lovely work  I hope we can see it on the table as soon as it is safe.

It will be on the table as soon as we are able mate- i've actually got another 2 on order, wanting to do an ASR version and possibly the all metal prototype. Kind of setting myself a challenge though (just don't let the wife know) to model a Defiant for each of the squadrons that used them throughout the war and in as many different guises as I can. There's loads of schemes to go after such as:

Night fighter- Red codes and serials- Red and blue roundels only

Night fighter- Red codes and grey serial- Yellow, blue, white and red roundels

There are loads of different versions with different coloured markings and different roundels, plus those with names and kill markings. Its quite a big subject really

An odd aircraft, but I like it.

That's part of the appeal for me- it is an odd aircraft but the concept was sound, just hampered by the escorts.

That's very kind of you to say. I made the base myself. Its just PVA (or white glue) with grass flock chucked on and left to dry. A few different shades and lengths give is a slightly more realistic look. Doesn't take too long to do in all honesty, its messy but good fun

Excellent job, those rivets must've took ages!!

The time is really spent in the measuring from the plans, onto the plane, drawing the line and making sure they are sort of level and straight. The easy bit is with the rivet tool as its a quick push along the line and you have rivets. Worth it in the end though and when you get on a roll theyre done quite quickly.
