I don't think the guard-rails look oversize at all, I think they look very good, and certainly enhance the model. Well done. Know what you mean about the railings - I have no idea how high they would have been but I am guessing that if they were meant to stop somebody falling overboard they would have been at least 3ft high, maybe 4ft. My maths may be wrong but at this scale I make that between 1.5mm and 1.8mm which is pretty small. Whatever the case they do make the model look a lot more realistic.
