FORD ESCORT MK2 build (italeri kit)

Recommended Posts

Outstanding work so far, especially the boot area.  You might want to rethink the HT leads though, because that's the starter motor, not the distributor. :)

The distributor is on the side, between the first and second intake ports:

Thanks for the pics six, but it's in an unfinished state of affairs and I've already moved the leads, lol

I've positioned a distributor in pretty much that position, insomnia update pics here...

We have an oil filter bottom left just above the sump, repositioned distributor, re-made crank cogs, radiator filler cap, oil filler cap and some extra detail for the engine bay generally.

I'll post more pics after some sleep 👍

Engine details so far, I think this will be about it until everything is painted? Sump missing from the bottom, so there will be more depth vertically than this shows. The oil filter won't fall below the bottom of the sump. Oil filter is from an aftermarket 1/24 engine that I had x2 of for some reason from my lancia stratos build?

Also had to remove the back corners of the kit engine bay as they were hitting the cars. And Re-making the top cogs has given it even more of a daft face 🙄😂

I'm not by any means capable of recreating a photo realistic version of anything, but am happy with this as is I think. The bay will get crowded quickly if I add too much more, and there will be some wiring bits and bobs to go in there yet too. So I think it's done for now till prime time

Thanks for looking 👍

Hope everyone got more sleep than me, lol

Had a play with some mudflap mounts, then some styrene mudflaps with pins (pins are 0.5mm rod)...

They're tight enough that they stay in place without glue, super bonus

Fronts next.

Thanks for looking as always 👍

Hi all, work been busier and busier so progress has slowed. I'm also changing/adding here and there which eats time too, lol

Interior work has begun. I've re-made the seats from a spare set of original kit seats again to be wider than my previous effort. Then added milliput to the wings to replicate the Cobra seats I'm going for. Added some tape for texture down the centre panel.

IMG_20200627_195819

The centre panel also needed to be more shaped, so I made some fillets...

IMG_20200627_195834

IMG_20200627_195850

Then added textured tape to those fillets

IMG_20200627_195936

IMG_20200627_195950

Some general shots of the interior mocked up. A lot of work had to go into remaking a roll cage that would hold the dashboard in the correct position. Same for the pedals too, a new mount has been made so that they can hang in place.

IMG_20200627_200023

And a new homemade footrest for the co driver

IMG_20200627_200418

Experimenting with ideas for the rear of the interior. Maybe these spare rubber pockets from the belkits escort mk1 extras I bought, and some homemade helmet stands/hangers

IMG_20200627_200451

Trying to finalise all these bits and bobs, but not 100% with the boot detail. I made a slightly smaller than kit version of the largest tank in the boot from some plastic tube/sheet and some aftermarket hydraulic joints

IMG_20200627_200625

IMG_20200627_200651

Loads to do or decide on, I'll just keep doing the bits in ront of me and maybe be able to paint some parts soon, lol

Thanks for looking👍

That's pretty incredible work, not just the seats but building your own rollcage and then having to make sure everything which hangs off it just so. I've struggled enough with kit cages so to be starting from scratch just boggles the mind.

Hi,

Speaking from experience, it would be impossible to get the helmets from that position if you were sat in the front, helmet hooks would be attached to the roll cage behind the seats .

The usual setup to store helmets in while driving on road sections would be either a Helmet Net or Helmet Box which usually gets the helmets within arms reach.

Unless it's a really short road section between stages when the poor navigator would be balancing 2 helmets on their knees while trying to wrestle with a roadbook and timecards.....

Great work and detailing as usual Paul :)

The tape on the seats is a great idea that I'll be using in the future no doubt, is it just medical tape?

I thought you'd been quiet lately as there was no progress reports

Been the same myself, busy at work and no time for important stuff ;) Finally beat the 442 into submission and I'm in the process of choosing the next project which needs to be a mojo builder and doesn't fight back too much 🤔

Thanks Ian, very useful to know!

Good timing too, lol. I'll have to look into the options for positioning 👍👍👍

Great work . Are you sure your not designing a prototype for a kit manufacturer and not letting on ?!

 Gary.

Thanks Gary, you're too kind. I'm just enjoying the process, finishing isn't as good for me as the build. I'm a weirdo...

And I'd say that I've got the same production speed as a manufacturer developing a new kit, but that's about it😂😂😂

Thanks Ian, yep, work seems to be picking back up alright. As you say, it's stealing my build time, lol

It is just medical tape mate, yes. Great texture for many applications and sticks like a bugger too!

Also available in a wider roll, the last one I bought off ebay was a 70-75mm wide one for wrapping that fiesta rs wrc rear wing in one go. Haven't seen those in the chemist/shops, but obvs ebay has it all 👍

Cheers Spiny, I had to figure out how to be able to have the dash attached to the base of the model AND still be able to take the body on and off!

I had put the door magnets on the inside of the body in the way, lol 🤬😤😡

The roll cage was the handiest way to try and solve it. Wasn't too bad with a few thicknesses of tube and rod. Watched 'the Irishman' while I figured it out, and had it done before the 3 hours were up and all of the mobsters were dead 😂😂😂

Colour added to body work. Had some real trouble as I decided to use tamiya x-7 gloss red over a vallejo grey primer.

The result was a nice deep burgundy, the x-7 seemed to be that colour from the bottle, but I hadn't helped by using the grey primer 🙄 lol

After experimenting mixing tamiya acrylic paints and getting some very nice orange tones, I finally checked tamiya xf-7 flat red. The tamiya flat red is a lot brighter than the tamiya gloss red?

Ahh well, here's the flat red as it sprayed over the burgundy...

I sprayed a layer of microsol gloss over this to seal it before i add the decals to the body.

It makes the red pop a little more and look closer to what I'm after colour-wise. more soon.

Thanks for looking as always

Stay safe 👍

Updates

I've just applied the most useable fantastic decals I've ever known. The Roger Clark cossack set by decalcas from the spot model website are amazing.

To be fair my most recent experience has been with the fiesta rs wrc decals by belkits, which seemed more like a joke being played on me by that company, lol!

They were the worst I've come across, so to use this decal as set was a proper treat. Almost laid themselves.

Here's the car before touching up the black around the door handles

I've also received a treat on the post from KMP modelling in Italy. It's a mixed bag of modern and historic rally car mechanicals/tools that are 3d printed. I want to play with them, so something from these bits will find their way into this build.

The kit comes with decals for a tin of WD40!?!

Whatever next?

Thanks for looking 👍👍

More soon

Looking good Paul :)

That's the set of decals I have as well for when ever I get brave enough or drunk enough to make a start 🤣

Looking forward to see what you do with the tools, that looks a great little set :)

Be careful taking them off though, they look delicate, and I bet the one you want is in the middle 🤣

To be fair to Belkits, my experience has been that they lay themselves, just not in the place where you want them to go and definitely round corners ;)

Pmslol

Thanks Ian, and that's exactly what I thought about the tools 😂😂😂

I wanted to have a play with them and start snipping them and organising, but it'll be a full day, lol

Good instructions, tells you exactly which bits go with which, and they're all in the same area on the little base.

But a separate project deffo

Belkits decals are cracking

Literally, literally actually cracking, everywhere 😂😂😂

Looks fantastic, always loved the Cossack livery!! Good to know that the Decalcas decals are good to use as they have a few sets that tickle my fancy...

Cheers Steve!

I'll be looking at their decal sets first for future builds, they were awesome.

To be fair, this car has no massive areas to cover with compound radiuses to form around like the fiesta wrc build, but with the quality of these decals I'd be surprised if you had any issues. 👍

Ahh well, it WAS all going too smoothly wasn't it 😂😂😂

Here are the results of using microscale gloss as a decal surface prep, and then sealing with the same product (following the instructions on the bottle I might add). The cracks appeared after the above, so I attempted to reduce them as much as possible and fill them/overcoat with another clear finish.

IMG_20200717_190500

IMG_20200717_190455

Then that happened 🙄😳😂

I've managed to scrape the doors, bonnet and boot cleanly back to the plastic already. The base/interior I can live with as weirdly the cracking didnt occur on all surfaces, just one one door at first for example, not both?

I could almost live with the body, but I'd rather strip it all and try again, if I can get hold of the decals quickly anyway, lol

But the job of stripping the body has stopped me attacking it, it's beaten me for today. My initial plan was to clear the body parts Friday, let that dry and harden and be playing with taking those KMP tools apart and cleaning and sorting them in the meantime to see what I want to use from it, but paint stripping it is.

Anyone got any top tips for stripping the whole thing back to plastic without it falling apart?

I've been lucky with my last two builds, so I was due a disaster, lol

All part of the process I suppose, I wanted to start again when I'd used the grey primer to be fair, it made hard work of the red. The whole paint has been a bit of a nightmare 😂😂😂

Sorry to hear of your problems with the paint, I'm sure you will have it looking showroom in the near future!
