Hello chaps

I’d like to throw my hat in with an Eduard FW190 A-8 in 1/48. It’s the new tool kit which I read is very nice indeed and it certainly looks it in the box. Speaking of which here is the box.

And in one of these 2 colour schemes.

See you for the of.

I've always liked the JG5 scheme so I too vote for Scheme B.

Welcome to the GB and good luck.

Hello chaps

Not really a first update but the obligatory sprue shots as I hope to start cutting some plastic and etch this weekend.

And this close up one to show the very nice surface detail in this kit.

Updates to follow soon hopefully.

Thanks

Hello chaps

I finally got around to making a start on this one about 10 days ago and it’s moved on pretty quickly. Well quickly for me at least.

Cockpit first as usual with a mix of etch for instrument panel and side consoles and plastic for the rest. Painted with Tamiya German grey and then given a wash using a mix of 50/50 kleer and water with a drop of black and red brown followed by a light grey dry brush and a flat coat.

Not much happening on the side walls.

I didn’t give the engine much attention as not much will be seen so just a black coat and a silver dry brush.

And all together.

Once the wings were together the uc bay had a coat of mr hobby rlm 02 and then the same treatment as the cockpit. On dry fitting I found a gap at the rear joint as added a piece of plastic card to fill that in. A spreader was also needed in the fuselage to eliminate a gap at the wing root.

I also glued a couple of bits of plastic card in to blank of the ejection shoots as there was nothing in the kit.

And another small piece of card to sort out this gap.

It’s all together now and had a coat of primer. Sorry forgot to take a pic yet. There was also a bit of fettling to do around the cowlings as there are a lot of mating surfaces to bring together and get lined up. My fault really, not the kits. Rush rush!

More updates soon.

Thanks for looking.

That's looking really nice James and congratulations on spending on time on the dry fitting in order to avoid the dreaded filler.  This is something that I need to learn!

Cheers.

I have to echo Cliff's comments on the dry fitting, it's all too easy, especially if you're used to Tamiya kits, to expect that everything should fit together perfectly.  I learnt basic engineering skills from modelling and fixing my pushbike as a youth - something which has stood me in good stead for the 37 year I have worked in engineering.  Dry fitting and the use of shims should save a lot of filler being used.

Good to see, well done James!

Thanks Wez and Cliff

The less sanding and filling the better As far as I’m concerned. I’ve been trying different brands of sanders over the past year and have had problems with getting rid of scratches, as much a case of bad workmanship than anything else, so the less sanding the better. Just a little bit of forward planning saves a lot of grief later on.

Hello chaps

Paints on! Sorry for the lack of an update, must try harder!

Anyway I've got the paint on, all painted free hand with Mr Colour. The blue for the cowl ring and the yellow for the defence of the Reich band were sprayed first and then masked.

Undersides and fuselage sides were next with RLM 76. I gave the more prominent panel lines a pre-shade with black and everything else a pre-shade with dark blue and a bit of dark brown around the exhausts. As always the photo doesn't show it up that well but it there to the mk1 eye ball.

The topsides were also the given the same pre-shade treatment as before with black and brown instead of blue. Once the standard camo was on I went onto the mottling. This was my first real go at mottling so I'm quite happy with how it's turned out. Finally the black areas around the exhausts and the fuselage band were masked and sprayed.

I gave it a gloss coat of Mr Hobby GX100 this morning in preparation for the decals which will be happening soon.

Thanks for looking.

Questions and comments welcome as always.

Hi everyone

I managed to get all of the decals on last week. It actually only took a couple of evenings which quite quick for me and they behaved very well to. Pics below.

And finally the spinner spiral which I thought if anything's going to go wrong it will be this one but all was fine.

So with that done it's onto varnishes and washes next.

Thanks for looking.

Hi everyone

It's update time again.

Not a huge amount of progress as I've been concentrating on my 109 lately but I've applied and removed a Flory models dark dirt wash and sealed it in with a satin varnish ready for some oil weathering.

50130767561_1a9ab67f54_c.jpgEBA71D65-DC2B-4D2B-9F20-325B00963B61 by James Halls, on Flickr

I think the underside looks best as it shows the wash far better in all those rivets.

So next will be some oils and then that will be the main airframe done. Then onto the U/C, propeller and head rest for the canopy to have this one finished.

Thanks for looking. Questions and comments welcome as always.
