Post-War RAF Tempest II squadrons in Silver?

From the top of my head I’ll suggest No. 26 Squadron based at Gatow, West Germany and a few examples of No.33 Squadron whilst participating in anti CT strikes during Operation Firedog.

A good and cheap-ish book to track down is Ospreys Tempest Squadrons of the RAF written by Chris Thomas. Excellent value, well written and beautifully illustrated.

Cheers.. Dave

APS Sylt too?

Haven't seen any Tempest II's with them, TT.5's yes.

I think 16 Sqn at Fassberg flew some silver finished examples.

I did read somewhere that the silver paint was applied over the original camouflage paint and wore somewhat indifferently but I can't remember where the hell I read that.

Yes of course there was those two sqns

For some reason (I don't know why), I thought the OP was only interested in BAFO sqns, I even looked in the same book as you!  Whatever was I thinking?

Thanks for the plug Dave!  Just to summarise, no silver known in the UK squadrons (183/54, 247) but in BAFO 26 Sqn certainly had a small number, also 33 Sqn had at least 3 (as they are visible on deck in transit to Malaya in a couple of photos) but I've not found any 16 Sqn examples.  Meanwhile in India 5 and 152 Sqns had examples but nothing known for 20 or 30 Sqns.  In Malaya, most of 33's Tempest IIs were eventually painted silver but this was being replaced by the Long-range DFS shortly before they were replaced by Hornets.  One other example was 135 Wing's WCF's aircraft PR674/FRC (for Frank Carey) also based in BAFO.

The Typhoon and Tempest Story by Chris Thomas and Christopher Shores has several photos of silver Tempest II. Those are VE865 W2-Y of 80 Sqn., PR674 FR-C of 135 Wing, PR772 OQ-R of 5 Sqn. and PR533 5R-V of 33 Sqn.
