I hadn't realised there was a window when both would be in place... I thought it would maybe only a very small number of aircraft in transition, interesting. Comments on here (and elsewhere) tended suggest it was one or the other.

 

I suppose this is one of those things a clear reference of the actual aircraft you are building is critical (if you are so inclined when it comes to accuracy)... a bit like the colour of the seat, if the flare holder is in place, or whether the area behind the seat should be aluminium or 'cockpit green'.

 

I keep telling myself that none of this really matters... and that no-one looking at the model would be able to argue the other way... and most of the time I convince myself thats the case.... (But I still try to check!).

 

I have learned over the years to not worry about strict colour accuracy... especially as we all fade or lighten our colours anyway... I need to get on board with relaxing some of the other stuff that concerns us (but very few others!).

It is indeed a very good book, excellent quality photos.

Bill, just been through it 3 times but not seen the photo of the pole aerial plus IFF.

Which page is that on?

Hi Bill, thanks for the clarification.

 

This lockdown must be getting to me. The reason I asked the question is that I could have sworn your post said "..BOTH the IFF aerials from tailplane to fuselage AND the early pole mast..." rather than what it actually says "..BOTH the IFF aerials from tailplane to fuselage AND the early radio cable from mast tip..." 

 

To see both the IFF aerials and the early pole aerial mast on the same Spitfire Mk.1 would be unique.

 

Right, if that's what my eyes are doing with words, I'd best put my scalpel and model making tools down! Nurse!

Same here, got the notification.   Probably still sent by air, but the parcel will be elbowing it's way to find room in the cargo bay.   Here in Canada, Montreal and Toronto accept one flight per day from London/Heathrow, while Vancouver only three per week.

Yep. Waiting on my copy too, to the land down under. Was going to post here about it but Jack beat me too it. Ordered as soon as the email hit from Red Kite. Don't expect to see it any time soon. I also ordered some books from Pen and Sword over 8 weeks ago and still have't seen them, though some Hannant's stuff is finally getting through, ordered well after the books! (?)

 

Funny enough, one Hannants order took a little over 4 weeks to get here, but I have other Hannants orders placed earlier than that one still to arrive - go figure 'cause I can't. Apparently Oz Post has been inundated with parcels 'cause everyone is ordering stuff online now, which combined with a shortage of international transportation makes for diabolical delivery times. 

 

Oh well, we modellers are supposed to be a patient lot, aren't we? Yeah....na

Sheesh, £10 shipping on top of £20 for the book... guess I'll be waiting until I can get it (in the US) more economically.  Unless somebody wants to send me a review copy, nudge nudge wink wink.

With my luck, if I waited like that, they'd go out of print before they got down to a price I wanted, then I'd have to pay even more. These limited-market specialist publications sure don't get cheaper over time unless you find one on clearance...

Amazing what you find sometimes when looking for something else. Came across an article by Hooton in an old Scale Aircraft Modelling dealing with Mk I Spitfires. On IFF, he states:

 

'...this was not fitted until late September-October 1940. Aircraft after X4641/P7660 were fitted, and all earlier aircraft were retrofitted after this date.'
