Hi All,

Here is my completed build of the Special Hobby 1/48 scale Fairey Barracuda. HMS Illustrious April 1945.

Quite a challenging model due to some major issues with the kit but finally completed and photographed before the ASW aerials were knocked off.

Changes include

additional detailing of cockpit and crew areas

additional cockpit windows inside of leading edge at cockpit sides

4 Wing top aerial posts replaced with Brass wire

Undercarriage legs scratch built from brass and plastic tube

Wing fold handles added to outer wing panels made from brass rod

Radiator exhaust built from folded brass sheet as its completly missing from the kit.

Sliding rear fuselage panel opened and replaced with Aluminium foil.

The ASW aerials really are too small but still thinking whether to bother to strengthen them.

Paints from Mr Colour

Decals from Sierra Scale 1/48 Barracuda kit, the ony usefull parts in the whole kit.

Seen on HMS Illustrious

Gidday All, here is my build of the Japanese destroyer IJN Yukikaze in 1/700 scale, as I think she appeared in 1945. This ship was a Kagero class destroyer, the only one of the eighteen ships of the class to survive WW2, and she did so with hardly a scratch. Despite being involved in just about every major naval action of the Pacific war she didn't receive a single hit. Her only damage, of a minor nature, was caused by a mine. I read that she achieved legendary status among the Japanese people.

As I don't have a model kit of this ship I've modified a Hasegawa kit of the very similar IJN Yugumo, which was the second ship (and the name ship) of the following class of destroyer. I've drilled out the scuttles in the hull, replaced the no.2 turret with two gun pits for extra triple 25mm AA guns, replaced the depth charge rails, modified the bridge superstructure, added extra single 25mm and 13mm AA guns and replaced the topmasts with scratch-built topmasts, plus added radar to the masts.

Here she is, IJN Yukikaze 1945

Thank you all for your interest and for including me in this group build.

Stay safe in these times, and regards to all, Jeff.

Here's my 1/48 Hasegawa Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate "Frank". It's done as a machine from the 9th Hiko Sentai based in the Nanking area from May 1945 onwards. I used Maketar masks for the hinomarus, some decals from Rising Decals and some from the kit. Painted with Mr. Color, Humbrol, Tamiya, Revell and Colourcoats.

The Last Dogfight - 15th Aug 1945

Supermarine Seafire MkIII LR866 / S121.

887 NAS HMS Indefatigable Japan.

Sub Lieutenant Victor Souter Lowden

Following the release of the Atomic bombs on Hiroshima 6th August and Nagasaki 9th AugustAmerican Tasks Force 38 remained off the coast of Japan.  It was joined by a token Royal Navy group built around the carrier HMS Indefatigableand the battleship HMS King George Vwhich was designated Task Force 38.5.

Strikes were ordered to commence at dawn on 15th August.  At 0400 hrsa Firefly Ramrod was launched followed by six Avengers from 820 NAS with an escort of eight Seafire L Mk IIIs from 887 and 894 NAS.  Five L Mk IIIs led by Lt F Hockley (894 NAS) would provide close and middle cover while SLt V. Lowden (887 NAS) would fly top cover with the three remaining Seafire F Mk IIIs.  As the Avengers approached their designated target, Kisarazu airfield, they found it shrouded in cloud, forcing them to attack their alternate target – a chemical factory near Odaki Bay.

Odaki Bay airspace was a busy place on the morning of 15th August, not only the fourteen aircraft from HMS Indefatigablebut also six Hellcats and an unknown number of Corsairs from USS Yorktownheading for the airfields at Atsugi and Hokodo

As the Fleet Air Arm aircraft climbed through low cloud to 6,000 to 8,000 feet a gaggle of a dozen A6M5 Zekes was seen coming down from the three o’clockhigh position.  The diving Zekes passed the top cover and headed for the Avengers and close escort Seafires.  Sufficient warnings were given to counter the bounce, but R/T failure doomed Fred Hockley and he was shot down in the first pass (the last Royal Navy Casualty of WWII).  SLt Hockley managed to bale out of his Seafire but he was later captured and executed by his captors.

The remaining Seafires turned into the Zekes.  With the first element of Zekes out of range SLt VS. Lowden moved his flight into line abreast and engaged the second group of Zekes.   The first Zeke was shot down was at long range, Lowden, opening fire at 800 yards and closing to 450 yards with excellent marksmanship.  His port cannon jammed causing the aircraft to yaw as the starboard cannon fired but he hit a second Zeke at 250 yards and blew it up with three short bursts.  His third victim was engaged at short range but as three more Zekes approached he left it to Slt Williams who had already destroyed an enemy aircraft in the first phase to finish it off.  Lowden was forced to fight the new arrivals in turn and, when he ran out of ammunition, he pulled through into a 425 knot dive to disengage.

Only Fred Hockley was lost during the engagement.  Vic Lowden was the last to land, with no ammunition and a badly over heating engine.  At 0700 asignal from Admiral Nimitz had been received which cancelled all strike operations.  CAP however was to be maintained.  World War II was over.  Slt Victor Lowden had launched at war and landed at peace.

The model is the Special Hobby 1/48 Supermarine Seafire III BPF boxing.

Paint is Xtracrylics & Tamiya.

Decals are a mixture of box & Xtradecal generic BPF set.

"Eagle Owl"

Heinkel He 219 A-7, 1./NJG 1, May 1945

Kit: Tamiya Heinkel He 219 A-7 "Uhu" (#61057)

Scale: 1/48

Paints: Vallejo Model Color, Model Air & Metal Color, Lifecolor, Tamiya Acrylics, Tamiya Color Spray

Weathering: Mig weathering products, Mig pigments, Flory Models wash, Tamiya weathering products

Tamiya Uhu did not fail - simply superb kit that I enjoyed a lot. Been looking this plane for a while now, wanted to build it. Such a cool plane - looks so sinister & deadly - but still so graceful.

And before you ask - antennas were broken many times in the process of making this kit... ;)
