New Hawker Hunter sets for the Airfix kit (quite a few)

Hi Guys

Well I have been working away at making up some new sets for the Hunter, and improving and or correcting others.

With some new information to hand and also just delving into more pictures and or posed questions I found a few small little errors either in the Airfix kits and or my parts.

So with a little help from fellow Britmodellers, sloegin57 (Dennis Robinson) and StephenMG (Mark Gauntlett), and a prompted question by John B (Sc) on the forum, I started to look at various areas of the airframe and wings.

So firstly it became apparent that the replacement spine that I did for the F.4 was not quite correct, so that has been tweaked, and modified making it more easy to fit to the kit.

Secondly the unique spine needed for the F.5 was developed, it was tricky to obtain information on this option but Mark helped me out tremendously.

John raised the question IF the position for the outer wing pylon was correct as marked out in the kit????? see here https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235053600-airfix-148-hunter-f6-inboard-pylon-shape/

Now for this the BEST reference I have for this is page 92 of the excellent Hunter from the cockpit book, by Adhoc Publications, has an almost perfect top plan of a Hunter.

This was used and scanned and scaled to compare with the Airfix kit and also the 1/72 and the 1/32 Revell kits as reference. The good news is that all three kits in the three scales all match up well, as general size and shape, this is a very good result, however it shows up that most easily obtainable drawings are not correct, but the kits are.

However this and other further research then shows where Airfix (Revell kits more correct) has gone wrong and made some errors. To keep it simple and to the point here, the 'centre hinge point of the Aileron' is not in the correct position, it is to far outboard. So what this does and means that the outer pylons are then also too far outboard, and I would say by the same amount. So with a little deduction I have made the variance between 2.5 and 3mm in 1/48 scale. With that it was tricky on how to adjust the Ailerons to make them look right and fit the kit without too much difficulty, well I have done that, so a new set is available.

Also move the position of the pylon inboard, I will be detailing this on the post above and will have more details up on my website in the next few days, with marked up sketches and photographs, to enable all modellers to place either the kit pylons or my set of improved pylons at the correct position.

Lastly Tiger331(Mark Attrill) pestered me, well in a nice way, to make some 230 Gallon tanks, so they got done plus a wing set to convert the Mk.6 to a Mk.9.
