Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 (edited) Hello everyone... well I cant just stop at two so I just ordered two more Eduard over-tree’s sets. Both are Mk.VIII’s, the second will be a Mk.VIII in a nurse shark scheme. though I will be doing RG*V A-58-497 as flown by Wing Commander Bobby Gibbes RAAF. Is this profile accurate with the earth brown ? Or were these Day fighter scheme Dk.Green/Ocean grey ? Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or thoughts. JosephLalor Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 I've a notion that RAAF Spitfire VIIIs were in Day Fighter Scheme from A58-600 on. I may well be wrong, so I'll see what I can dig up. 1
malpaso Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 (edited) I think all the Grey Nurse VIIIs were in the DFS Dark Green, Ocean Grey and Medium Sea Grey colour scheme. But there were other VIIIs in the Dark Green, Dark Earth over MSG paint jobs. If you go on the Eduard website you may be able to download the Aussie 8 instructions. I guess the Mark VIII was the point at which Supermarine complained about the wide variety of colour schemes expected out of the factory gates! Edited April 22, 2020 by malpaso 1
Christer A Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 I'd also follow the Eduard instructions fot Aussie Eight which days Day Fighter Scheme but with overpainted areas in Foliage Green, Dark Grey and Sky Grey. It looks funky when @trickyrich does it! 1
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted April 23, 2020 Author Posted April 23, 2020 (edited) Hello everyone... Well with my existing decals i can do these 3 options. Are Clive Caldwells codes in/on these profiles/aircraft Lt. grey or white. If they're white I can possibly scrounge these as well. My only thing is I prefer other schemes to the day fighter scheme or Modified DFS. Nothing wrong with it I just try to do alternatives when I can. I was hoping to do the Dk. green/earth brown scheme but not restricted to it. I might have something in Desert colors, but have to dig thru my files. Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted April 26, 2020 Author Posted April 26, 2020 Hello everyone... Update time, these two kits should be here on Monday sometime. Still looking at Scrimgeour’s plane but I may switch to another scheme. The leading contenders in 457 squadron are now 80 W/c Bobby Gibbes RG*V, or ZP*F Flt.Lt. Bill Cable. The other contenders are HF.Mk.VIII’s starting with AVM Harry Broadhurst, SAAF 1 Sq. AX*B. Still trying to determine the correct scheme for this one. Eduard show Mk.VIII JF322 in Day Fighter Scheme with extended wings. While Montex show the same plane HF.Mk.VIII JF322 in Desert scheme with extended wings. Finally the last options are from the USAAF 307th Fs. or 308th Fs. The 307th is an squadron hack, and the HF.Mk.VIII is from the 308th Fs. Dennis
trickyrich Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 Hi Dennis, go find the instructions for the Aussie Eight on Scalemates, the first few schemes are the DK Green/Dk Brown. From what I have read most of the latter Spitfires we received were the Grey/Green ones. Now depending on where these aircraft were assembled depended on what their end colour scheme was. I lot of the Green/Brown ones ended up being painted Foliage Green. I'll check the book that came with mine as there is quite a bit mentioned about the colour schemes and the official changes made. The RAAF Mk.VIII"s did come in a variety of schemes.

Most of my 1/72 British/Commonwealth I have are Sky/Grey codes for early war. I have very little in the way of later war or alternative colors. If I had a yellow “D” I could do 54 Sq. Planes unfortunately I only have yellow “L’s”. I dont have any stencils small enough either or Id paint the letters. Edited April 26, 2020 by Corsairfoxfouruncle
trickyrich Posted April 26, 2020 Posted April 26, 2020 Hmm that may be a problem, though a D is not the hardest letter to mask up. 1
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted April 27, 2020 Author Posted April 27, 2020 Hello everyone... Ok the kit showed up early today. A post office delivery on a Sunday is unheard of. Obligatory Sprue shots. Should get a start on these in a day or two. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or thoughts. Dennis 1
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 Hello everybody... Well I finally got to start on this today. I spent three hours painting the internal bits. I still need to finish the IP but 2:00 am and I’ve been up for 20 hrs already. I will go ahead and start to build the cockpit tomorrow. I have decided to switch to A-58-497, one of three Mk.VIII’s flown by Bobby Gibbes. I was contacted by a member that gave me some info pertaining to his first two Mk.VIII’s A-58-307 and A-58-497. Both of which were originally painted in DFS. But upon receipt by 457 squadron were re-painted in Overall Foliage green over RAAF sky. Unfortunately this predates the shark scheme but 497 had Clipped wings for a short timespan, so should make for an interesting scheme. Sadly 497 crashed and burned from a engine seizure on takeoff so never saw combat. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments and or thoughts. Dennis

Whats that you speak of ? I quit modeling at 02:00 and couldn't fall asleep until 06:00, Insomnia sucks. 1
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 Evening everyone... I do so like these kits when they fall together. I was able to finish off the cockpits and assembled the fuselage today. Wanted to do more but my back cant hold out that much. I copied a trick from @trickyrich’s build i used little bits of plastic strip under the cowling and carburetor intake. I normally do that with builds that dont have joining pins or tabs, but never thought to do it on my Mk.IX build. I added the tape belts as well today. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or thoughts. Dennis 3
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted April 30, 2020 Author Posted April 30, 2020 (edited) Morning everybody... 03:45 here and Im still awake after a 5 hour session tonight. I was able to get the wings built up on both Mk.VIII’s. Then mounted to the respective fuselages. A formation shot of all my spitfire builds. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or thoughts. Dennis Edited April 30, 2020 by Corsairfoxfouruncle 3

Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted April 30, 2020 Author Posted April 30, 2020 (edited) Hello everyone... I was able to get the Radiators, and some other little pieces in today. I forgot to drill the holes for these little bumps before the fuselage was closed up. Good thing you can kind of just make them out and I was able to add the little starter bump ? Fuel cap, radio mast mount, and bar between seat frame and next frame are now also added. Questions, comments, and or thoughts ? Dennis Edit: sanding, filling, and polishing will now commence. Patrice @TEMPESTMK5 responded with this about Carpená decals in my other thread. “ It looks like that you are planning to use Carpena decals be careful because they have a reputation for being difficult to use I fear that you are going to use a fair amount of decal products .” Hopefully that helps explain what he (Patrice) was mentioning. 1

JR Bonjour Jean Je n'utilise plus les decals Carpena depuis longtemps car en général elles n'epousent pas bien les surfaces "non planes" sur lesquelles on les applique ils faut donc utiliser du liquide special et elles se decollent à la longue ... Cordialement I have not used Carpena decals for a long time because in general they do not follow "non-flat" surfaces on which we try to apply them on so we must use special liquid and they "come off" in the long run Best regards Patrice 1 1
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted May 2, 2020 Author Posted May 2, 2020 Hello everyone... the sanding is going good and there wasn't much filler needed. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or thoughts. Dennis 2
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted May 3, 2020 Author Posted May 3, 2020 (edited) Hello Everybody... I was able to finish all the sanding and polishing on both of these today. Still need to re-scribe as I wanted to wait until I added the tail empennage. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or thoughts. Dennis Edited May 3, 2020 by Corsairfoxfouruncle 3
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted May 8, 2020 Author Posted May 8, 2020 Hello everyone... I finally started the paint on the two Mk.VIII’s. RAAF Sky blue for this, and Medium sea grey for the Boyd build. I know it looks like it has green cast or tones but thats the lighting, its definitely light blue. Next up is the Foliage green. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and add thoughts.
