DDR UAZ-469, MAC 1/72nd scale...

Recommended Posts

In this time of social distancing, quarantining, etc...it seems only fitting that I should visit my earth-bound neighbours over here in the armour/vehicles area of Brit Modeller.  I hope to not offend!  I have built my share of vehicles over the years and a recent GB has prompted me to get back into it...slowly...!  I am waiting for a German armoured car to arrive for that GB,  so in the meantime I thought I would warm up the bench with this little number...

I will be building the DDR version...

although there are some interesting decals supplied...

Sprue...There is enough for two or three different variants of this vehicle, mostly armed with cannon.  I will leave those alone for now.

There seems to be a fair amount of flash I need to clean up.

Some PE and foil has been supplied...

So I think what I will do is keep two builds going on the bench--an aircraft and a vehicle.  That sounds fun.

Ok...and I'm off.  The very tiny leaf-springs and drive train needed a fait amount of delicate cleaning due to the small amounts of flash.  Also, I drilled out the holes for the gear-shift so the little levers would fit--cleaned them up too.

And assembled they look like this.  I'll let them dry before I prime them.

I have cleaned up the rest of the sprue in situ and given these pieces a bit of primer.  The seats were primed with some Desert Tan.

Ok....It seems I have enough time on my hands to make these composite images of my build.  I hope it's not confusing.  Feel free to ask questions...

And be gentle...this is my first ground vehicle build since University, and that was a long time ago.  It was the Tamiya Merkava in 1/35th, btw...

Where we sit...

And where I have stopped for the night...

Questions will be answered...

very rapid progress!

Thank you Ben.  Not much to the kit.  If you look at the mouldings I have shown, not much care went into some of them.  The rear seat, for example, and the quarter panels.  I hope my next vehicle is better engineered.

Hi John

Seems to be typical of Mac kits - unusual subjects but a bit rough and ready. I have a couple of their Horchs and they are the same.

Speaking of engineering quality. I am currently building this

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/ammo-by-mig-jimenez-amig-8502-t-54-b--1195612

Without a shadow of a doubt this is one of the best kits I have ever built. The instructions are full colour and have a walk round of the real tank included.

Might be worth mentioning I'm not a fanboy of the Mig / Ammo brands but picked the kit up more out of curiosity (and I really wanted a T-54!)

All the best

Ben

I must apologize.  OI have changed my mind.  Instead of a Wee Little Truck from the DDR this will be from the Czech Republic, SFOR, Bosnia.  I will have the chance to add more decals to the vehicle.

What I have done today...I have added the clear pieces to the window frames, front and sides...

49809863808_2e7b3cd122_c_d.jpg

I have cut out the rear window in the roof.  It looked really odd filled with plastic.  I drilled around the edges then filed away.

49810417806_9d35583e16_c_d.jpg

The sapre tire assembly that attaches to the rear of the vehicle is composed of a nice PE piece and the wheel with no way to actually attach the wheel to the PE piece.  I have solved this with sprue.

49809863708_a3d1bf3072_c_d.jpg

Sprue goes in the hole and is glued with CA...

49810718842_de6778bda6_c_d.jpg

Then, once it is secure, I will trim down the sprue piece that sticks out so I can hang the spare tire properly.

With the windows, windscreen, bumpers and spare rack attached, this is where I will stop for the night.

49810417381_f3a2b30df7_c_d.jpg

A quick test-fit of the 'soft-top' has shown that I will need to do a bit of fettling to get the edges to meet up cleanly and without any gaps.

I really must do some more work on my Supermarine Seafang...😉  I am close wth that one too.

Here's just a little work.  The white piece of Evergreen is just to fill in the slight gap between the windscreen and the soft top.

You see?  Not noticeable unless you are looking for it.  The prop is a contra-prop from a Seafang I am building in the Spitfire/Seafire GB...

Next up...I think I might do the decals before the final minuscule pieces of PE---side mirrors and tow hooks on the front bumper.

Decals are on.  No big deal but I had to be careful.  They seemed old to me.  They took a long time to release and were thin.  Next up, a bit of varnish to seal the decals and then the tiny PE bits.

Very nice work, that too with such a microscopic vehicle.

It may be just me or the light, but isn't the windshield a tad out of proportion.

Here I go nitpicking again, need to see a shrink after this is over.

I have no idea.

Thanks though...Yes...The whole vehicle is really small!  A good size for my flat.

It looks really good with the decals on

Thanks John.

Here it is with some weather.  Just a light dusting of Balkan dirt, aka Midlestone.

I am calling this finished.  The tow hooks and the side mirror PE pieces are too small for me to handle this morning.  I can always come back.

RFI awaits...
