messyhead Posted April 19, 2020 Posted April 19, 2020 (edited) I've not built a model for quite some time, and had this Airfix kit lying around, so I thought I'll use it to get back into things. It came with paints, and I think it was a gift. It's a pretty rough looking model though, but it'll do for some practice. I'm not expecting great results, but it's lockdown on a Sunday afternoon, so needs must. Edited April 21, 2020 by messyhead
rob Lyttle Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 OK @messyhead good luck with the old Airfix job. 👍🤞 There's something amiss with the photo link. It's not showing up. I don't know who you're using to photo host, are they OK for 3rd party hosting?? You may have to change the images setting from private to public so it's visible to britmodeller, and to us!

I'll upload them to flickr and repost. Thanks for letting me know, as I was about to post more. 2

messyhead Posted April 21, 2020 Author Posted April 21, 2020 (edited) The model had next to no panel lines, so I wanted to try etching them. I'm not sure I've done that great a job of it, certainly not up to Aston Martin levels of scrutineering I also opened up the bonnet scoop. Here's some before and afters... p.s. the black paint round the front was due to me starting to get ahead of myself and apply paint Edited April 21, 2020 by messyhead 1

rob Lyttle Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 Good job on the cut panel lines. That's not so easy when they are all various curves! Cutting straight lines is one thing, but that looks "challenging "👏 1
Spiny Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 Good to see the photos now, looks like you're on the road with it now. I know you mentioned the panel lines (and I wouldn't have thought anything untoward if you had), but if scribing the lines it's always better to do lots of light strokes along the panel line with the scriber rather than one heavy one - not only are you less likely to slip out of the existing groove, but if you do you'll do much less damage. First few runs you will feel like you're doing nothing (if doing it right), then all of a sudden you'll feel a bit more resistance and you'll almost be done. 1

I did lots of light lines, but I was using a thin craft knife. There weren't any existing grooves, in fact the lines if they were there were raised. This mould is pretty rubbish. If I ever need to scribe lines again, I'll get a scribing tool and go easy on it. I'm using this model as a practice build and for painting. I want to try brush painting and get a good finish. I've watched a YouTube series on brush painting, and want to try out those techniques. I've got a Tomahawk as my next build, and want to do a good job on it.
Spiny Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 If there were no pre-existing lines I would say you've done an exception job in that case. 1
