I’m always impressed how you keep it on the level and on the square. In plastic, I find that tricky even when I assemble a kit! 😊 Wood’s not so bad, though I don’t know why not.

Actually Bertie its a bit trial and error with me, I'm always going back to things and either pulling them apart and having another go, or carrying out endless loops of corrective surgery until I cant take it anymore and have to accept it for what it is, I'm all over the place with wood, its more difficult to bodge 😅

Welcome back David and Happy New Year to you.

And to you Mike, lets hope it is a good one this time, I'm hoping that I can make some serious progress on "the project" without too many distractions from house stuff !! though I may well go a little bit Bertie at some point as I got a wooden kit (Corel) of a Llaut (pronounced lyout) which is a local Balearic traditional fishing boat, shouldn't have too much of a problem with references as I can see three of them at the moment !!

Happy New Year, David.  Nice to see the awesomeness continues in 2024.

Dear John, lets hope so, I am rapidly getting to the mast, I dont think that I can avoid it for much longer, now I seem to recall that you did one in 1/350 that appeared to have been constructed by trained spiders, certainly not by human hand, .......can I borrow them ? 😁

with more "looking rough" work....

😂 Thank you....... but you can talk !

What with your modesty coupled with a project that is a dead ringer for a builders model, and really should end up at Greenwich, honestly, when I grow up I want to be like you Steve !!!:worthy:

I'm sure you'll be fine with the lattice mast.

Thanks Ant, I wish that I shared your confidence, I may have to start lighting candle, drawing pentagrams and sacrificing chickens before commencing 😉

A Very happy New Year David great to see you back with it.

Beefy, thank you, I am going to try to make a bit more progress this year, this new year will be the fourth, so I need to hurry up if Im going to do anything else with my life 😂

Sterling work though it looks a different scale to the rest of the bridge ;)

Too bloody right Rob, it was enormous, it must have been a terrible distraction having something the size of a largish house whirling around at the top of the ship, I asked dad about it and he said that after the initial "well I never" people just got used to it and forgot it was there !!

Because like many of us you have a masochistic streak in you. 🙂

Certainly not boring !!!

I'm sure with all the great comments and support that you will find the strength and enthusiasm to get to the launching...

Thanks Colin, I will get there, there is too much time invested in this now to stop, if I have a little lapse in enthusiasm I just get all the bits and put it all together, that normally does the trick, as it actually is starting to be recognisable as Victorious now !!

This build just keeps getting better and better.  But do let us know which paints you intend to use.  I'll need to buy shares in that company!

😂There is only one RN paint Jedi master and he is a wee bit north of the border, though it may be necessary to get litre at least (I wonder how many tinlets that is ?

In an effort to avoid the mast I've just painted a Scimitar 😀

Hi David,

We've been in the middle of a deep freeze here for the last couple of weeks :cold: & all my spiders have gone into hibernation.   But, I'm very sure you will be able to handle it.   I'm looking forward to seeing what awesomeness you will achieve building the mast. :spider:

BTW, nice work on the aircraft.

What are your plans for the aircraft decals- or have I missed an earlier post?

I got a selection of generic markings with the white metal kits, and so far am just cobbling it together, funny you should mention it but alongside fighting the hand and foot rails on FLYCO, I've just now been dressing up the Scimitar, come to a grinding halt on the underwing codes though, I may have to have a go myself !!

You can always commission bespoke waterslide decals

If its any help David, I use these guys, standard price for an A6 sheet, though I just noticed their new website doesn't show it.  They specialise in guitar transfers, but will happily price custom sheets from pdf artwork

https://rothkoandfrost.com/collections/parts-components-waterslide-decals

They can also print in white

David, Hi. If you are looking for generic white or black UK style cades, have a look on the Hannant's site under their Xtradecals. Letters and numerals plus ROYAL NAVY logos. They also have sheets of roundels.

Colin the Wessex nut.

Hmmm, wet spaghetti in the bath. I haven't tried that one. Maybe later.

In the meantime I'll watch you add rivets to that Scimitar. 😁       Regards, Jeff.

Thank you Steve I will certainly check it out, I will have to try and get Photoshop and Inkscape up and running again !!

Oh no you wont Jeff :rofl:

I am tempted to ask if you think that I am stupid, but after fighting recalcitrant microscopic handrails yesterday, I think I should keep my head down, as I think I may well be a little "challenged " in certain quarters 😁

David - regards Decals - L'arsenal do 1/200 in French Code letters that look similar to RN.

Ventura decals from Hannants are a good optioon in RAF 4"/8" sizes in either 1/72 or 1/48.  I have them so if you want acrual measurements of letter height contact me

Hi Rob, 4mm is what I need for the under wing codes, if you could have a look I would be very grateful !!

Just a quick update, I have managed to beat FLYCO into submission, wot with all the hand and foot-rails, the former being 1/32 bobs buckles with 0.25mm brass wire, the foot-rails, being tiny styrene triangles with stretched sprue on top, would I want to do it again ?....as someone witty once said "I would rather be the love toy of a Greek army battalion" 😅

The radar is now sitting at the correct height, and I've added the railings to the platform, so its all starting to look a bit more convincing I think !!

53487807162_aed5465d2a_b.jpg

I'm going to have to think about the interiors soon, as the idea is to paint the bridge and flyco area before glazing it all and adding the inside bits

53488708936_9221eb7485_b.jpg

Those with sharp eyes will notice that I have cleverly captured the slightly wibbly nature of those on the real ship, it was tough, as of course they wanted to be perfectly straight !!! (that was heavy sarcasm btw) but the real ones really were rather wibbly so a touch of serendipity I think !!

And positioned on the big bit itself

That radar is unbelievably big. It looks more like an astronomical radio telescope than anything that should live on a ship. You have given it a proper sense of mass, even before the painting. Excellent !

Great work David.   When you said you're going to add interiors, my chin hit the floor.  :gobsmacked:

Looking at the photo of the 'big bit',  the first thing that came to mind was that it would be a great idea for a dining room table.  She's a real beauty ... or should I say an awesome beauty.  :worthy:

David' I'm sure you are more than acquainted with CorelDraw and its equivalents and that is all you need to get the decals you require- the one big proviso is colour. but in 1/200 scale you have quite a gradient in what is right or wrong.

Cracking work there David.  Can't wait to see this with some paint on her.

I used to use CorelDraw all the time - I think the version I used was 5.1.  Then they were bought out by someone else and the next version I bought was nowhere near as good.  I used MS PowerPoint for my decals these days.  You can download the official FAA/RAF post WW2 fonts free from t'interweb.

As you say, the challenge is printing in white.  But what I often do is paint the model with the background colour I need.  Photograph it and then use a tool such as MS Paint to extract the RGB colour of the background.  Generate the decals in white on black in PPT then swap out the black for the RGB colour.  Save the whole thing as a picture then import that picture so that you can scale to exact the size you want without the font trying to autosize.  Then print on white decal sheet.  Just remember that (certainly in my case), anything on an A4 screen in PPT prints smaller so increase by 15%  The aircraft side number, 564, on this 1/72 Jetstream, was printed in exactly that way.

It really was enormous Bertie, and thank you, if you look at film of the ship at sea it rotates surprisingly quickly, I gather it was actually very good and was considered world beating at the time, though a little on the complex side !!

Good bit of plastic work David, not far off before paint B):giggle:.

Thanks Stuart, I've still got quite a bit of gribblification before I squirt it (and much more after Ive masked and sprayed the pendant number), but I must admit to looking forward to seeing it in something other than primer !!

😁Thank you John, Though I must confess that I am not intending to go overboard with the inside bits, just enough to make it look like there is something going on in there, I dont think that it will be very visible to be honest, but it looks like an empty office block at the moment !

How on Earth did I miss this one - absolutely superb project!

Thanks Ian, its a bit of a slow burner as a project, now entering its fourth year, though I have invested so much time and effort in it now I dare not shelve it even temporarily, but really there are so many varied sub assemblies that each one is a months long project in its own right, so its difficult to get bored  !!

I notice that you have a love of Lotus cars on your profile, I have recently retired, but for the last few years was tasked with supporting Lotus Design from our Geely studio in Barcelona on bits of the Evija, Emira and the initial concept work for the Eletre, also got to meet Clive Chapman and a guided tour of Classic Team Lotus, happy days !!!

On 26/01/2024 at 23:50, Alun Gallie said:

Lovely work David. I know how fiddly I am finding that at 1/72 so you are a braver man than I.

Alun, thank you, but I fear that 1/72 brings its own problems, I didnt realise how much additional detail is required when going from 1/350 to 1/200, particularly now everyone is used to a level of detail that has been raised to excruciating heights by companies such as Pontos and Blackcat (to name a couple of culprits) . I have been following your work closely, and its magnificent what you are doing, the work required in 1/72 is exponentially more than I have to deal with, so I in turn salute your fiddly bits

Hi Les, yes you are right, I think its just sheer laziness on my part, I spent years with graphic and 3D modelling programs, so I try to avoid them if I can now I dont have to do it as a job, but I really should extract my digit and get on with it !!

I have ordered some decal paper and intend to have a go, I will keep everyone posted on my "journey" (when I have managed to raise some enthusiasm) maybe this task will actually get me starting the lattice mast, to avoid working on a computer 😉

Thanks Chewy I will certainly try that, also have a go at your trick with white (ordered some white decal paper too), love the jetstream !!  I remember getting taken around Scottish Aviation at Prestwick and seeing them being built when dad was CO at Gannet, I seem to remember that they were doing something to Starfighters there as well, but i dont remember what !!

Fantastic work so far, that radar was a hell of a size!

Thanks John, yes, a hell of a thing, and very complicated to make, one could maybe abbreviate it a bit in a smaller scale, but there is nowhere to hide in 1/200 🙄

18 hours ago, Gondor44 said:

That FLYCO looks like it was an afterthought with the way it clings to the side of the superstructure.

You are so right, it looks like it was originally meant to be at the same height as the bridge, but someone decided to make it higher quite late in the game....or of course someone misread the drawings and refused to accept that they had made a mistake 😁

It was added to in subsequent refits and looked (imho) even more cobbled together in her later years !!

Thanks for all of your support,

Id better go and do something on it now !!

Cheers
