Airfix 1/72 Boulton Paul Defiant Mk.I (done three ways)

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Upper DZ*Z Sharkmouth done in Vallejo VA71.251 NATO Black, lower TW*L done in Tamiya XF-69 NATO Black.

DSCF9242.jpg

There is a distinct and noticeable green hue to the XF-69 compared to the VA, also it looks like it's been stored away somewhere dusty and just needs a good going over with a feather duster.

I'll get a couple of coats of Pledge on them as a base for the decals and see how they shine up.

Comments and suggestions welcome

Cheers

What are those Lego clamps?

Hi, they're just the normal Berna Clamps that I CA'd Lego to the sides of the lower arm to stop the arms spinning around.

Now I can use them with one hand without them sliding off into the bin :yahoo:

Changed my life*

*a little bit with regards to clamping models :bye:

Hi All

Followed by Tamiya XF-11 J. N. Green

Haven't quite got the hang of those worms being the right way round on the concave vs convex curving demarcation edges

Anyhoo, on with the stickers. There are a few stencils, then the insignia

As for the sharkmouth, before

And after some DACO Strong

Sorry it's a bit blurry, must have been the fumes

Here they are waiting for a sealing coat of Pledge

Hmmm, you're making my Defiant efforts look very humble indeed - you didn't even screw up the identification code decal on UP*S like somebody did...

These are looking brilliant.

Thanks @jackroadkill, it's all down to a technique I picked up from the BM massive, namely take photos from a distance and against a white background

Here they are drying

Hi All

Before I gave them all a matt coat, I stuck on the sticky-out bits.

The drop-down aerials were removed with only a single casualty (one of the ones that had to remain full length, natch ), but the pitot tubes came away cleanly despite their gates

DSCF9262.jpg

I decided to leave the turret framing semi shiny to provide a contrast

DSCF9266.jpg

Must admit that Tamiya masking tape is a revelation over other generic DIY and craft brands. Clean edges, no leaks and no residue!

Thso, how did the W&N Matt Varnish turn out?

DSCF9267.jpg

Not too bad, even if I say so myself. Sprayed neat from the bottle, 0,4mm, 18psi.

This is the wheels up variant, and I had been wondering about a stand for it. I didn't want to cut a slot or holes in the belly, so I cut some gate runners from the clear sprue and glued them to the top of an old stand that I had removed the hook bit from with some bits of rubber band as padding.

DSCF9268.jpg

I'm never sure which way round they're meant to point, but it seems to be working out ok

DSCF9269.jpg

So this is where we are at the moment.

DSCF9270.jpg

All the other bits'n'bobs will join them for a week in isolation, as I don't trust the matt to be completely finger print proof for several days. Don't ask me how I found out.

Anyhoo, once they've cured, it'll be landing lights in, wheels and doors on, nav lights and canopy masks off, turret and prop, bingo bongo.

I'm off to look for something else to start in the mean time now that that flippin' Do-17z is out of the way!

Hi All

Well, it's about time I put these to bed.

The W&N Matt was still oddly slightly tacky and I may have got some paper towel lint on the wings as I was holding them, but it should come off.

The Tamiya tape came off a treat, the turrets slotted in with only minimal limb loss to the gunner, other bits'nbobs on and they're done (almost...)

DSCF9306.jpg

There's the matter of that light on the spine that I cut off and drilled out as I closed the fuselages together.

I was going to put a blob of Kristal Kleer on to replicate it, but it sank through.

However, there's this piece of the transparency sprue that's nice and thin

DSCF9310.jpg

Round the end off

DSCF9311.jpg

Cut it off, lose it, repeat a couple of times, then stick one on the blob of disappearing Klear

DSCF9312.jpg

Just like a bought one!

Do the same to the other two, and we're there.

Here they are together, I'll put more pics in the RFI section.

Thanks to all who joined along, see you on the next one(s)
