Hello everyone... Im going to be building an 1/48th RF-4B Phantom. It will be aircraft #7347 of VMFP in 1979. I built this kit sometime around ‘83-‘84 it was one of my best at that time as I took a careful approach to painting it.

Sadly it didn't survive, well at least not all of it. My friend asked if he could saw the nose off and use it for an RF-4C build in 1992. That model still live today in his collection. I would love to build the testors kit, with the Green tail and Gold wolfshead logo. However those kits & markings are as Rare as 🦄💩. Seeing as its the markings I'm wanting to replicate I will be building this kit Hasegawa kit # PT 31 6IP5lXU.jpg

There F-4B kit with the appropriate changes in plastic to get an RF as well as the Correct Decals.
This is a question for @Dansk as this kit is a pre-owned kit. My friend started the work many years ago and essentially it is many parts removed from the sprues. The wings are glued together and some of the cockpit is started. Does this fall under the 25% mark ? JIk59Ht.jpg

Awesome Dennis, I bought a Hasegawa phantom recently so I'm excited to see how it goes together for you. Yes it doesn't look built hardly at all so no probs with the 25% rule as Craig said.

Just as a kicker I've built a couple of Hasegawa Phantoms already. First one is the Fg.1 in RN markings. Fg.1 “007” 1975-76.sK2szr0.jpg

Next up was the F-4EJ 87-8407 306th Hikotai 1980 Komatsu A.B.

t2gZ1Zj.jpg

Academy F-4B in 1/48, VF-111 F-4N 151000 1975.

Yd5v3iY.jpg

1/48 Monogram F-4C converted to USMC F-4J early 1969. VMF-334 Chu-lai RVN. FW08TPC.jpg

And last up my first 1/72 Phantom. Monogram plastic from Accurate Miniatures F-4C 64-0852  Louisiana ANG Red-Flag 83-4 Nellis AFB March 1983. 7q26vR2.jpg

This RF-4B will most likely be my last in 1/48 as I have zero room to display them. Future builds will be in 1/72, in fact im looking at another F-4J in 1/72 from academy or Hasegawa as I have a set of decals for VF-74 just aching to be done.

Hi Dennis,

Yes I can see that storage is a problem with 1/48. I currently have 8  Phantoms in 1/72 - the original Airfix F4H-1 aka F-4B together with Fujimi's F-4B, RF-4B, F-4D, F-4E, F-4G, F-4J and FGR 2 with 2 of the latest Airfix ones still to build - one RN and one RAF - I do like Phantoms!  I also had the Airfix F-4E, Hasegawa/Frog F4K/M and ditto Matchbox but I have scrapped them. I already had the wood and now I have managed to get some brackets in spite of them being classed as "non essential" under current regs, so I will put up another 10 ft of shelving to cope with my recent/current/projected builds from the various GB.

Looking forward to seeing this build.

Cheers

Hello @PeterB I wish I could have shelves again, but had to destroy my cabinet and shelves when my daughter moved back home to go back to Uni for her third degree. She moved back into her old room which was my office. I now reside in the Foyer or entry hall with no display space. All of my models about 150 of them are in plastic storage trays or boxes. I personally would like an F-4B, D, 3x”E’s” (USAF/Israeli/Japanese) West German F, USAF C/G Wild weasels, RAF FGR.2, and an USN/USMC F-4S. So basically a lot more, the Japanese have so many interesting schemes its hard to limit it to a few.

Morning everyone...I decided I should probably start on this build sooner or later. Not much done but trying to fit the Etch into the office. RZeuC92.jpg
I will admit this is going to be a slow burn build for awhile, as I want to finish off my four Spitfires first. But this will get some work in between sanding, filling, re-scribing, and paint on those. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or thoughts.

Good job on the cockpit Dennis, that etch looks very nice indeed.

Thanks guys lets hope it survives handling and painting the plastic. The etch didn't seem to like the C/A that much ? If that fails maybe I can try 5 minute epoxy ?

Hello everyone... Well the etch stayed put, I added the rest and started to build the office up. Only to find out the rear bulkhead disappeared sometime before i received the kit. What to do ... what to do, well i scratched the rear bulkhead since I'm a modeler.tOQxr8c.jpg

It looks like 💩 but since this may be a closed canopy build anyways so I'm not particularly worried.

Throw a coat of paint and a wash and it should be ok. After that I mocked everything up to see what it looked like. KhHCPM0.jpg

Hello I taped up the Bang seats.7cZI59I.jpg

After that i started to paint them up. Tonight I will finish these and start the camera equipment. Once the cockpit and Cameras are done I should be able to figure out nose weight ? Not much in a phantom needed though.

Hello @Dansk... Im going to bow out of the build. This hasegawa is fighting me just like the last few Hase. kits have. Im pretty much done with there stuff. The quality over the last few years has gone down hill so much they're like a short run company now. I'm just losing interest and getting so frustrated and disgusted. Rather than bin the kit, i will shelve it and build it some other day. The cockpit is too large for the fuselage by about 3mm’s

47Mgd4P.jpg

and i keep trimming and losing more material but nothing is working. Phantom cockpits don't bulge out like this they should be a straight run up either cockpit sill.  I will have a think and if I have something else in the stash I will start another thread.

Sometimes things just don't work out. Don't beat yourself up on it, it's only a kit.

Box the kit up and take another look in a week or two. Things might look different then. Another build of something else is a great idea, it works for me when I hit a wall.

Really sorry to hear that Dennis but I totally understand, this is a hobby and it is meant to be fun and I have got to the same point as you many a time. Put it down, even if only for a short time, and if you want pick up another morale boosting kit even if it is just a build for yourself.
