While forced to stay at home, time to build is available rather abundant. So, a new kist has been opened after finishing the M1 gun (see

The first carrier is ready to receive it's base color:

In the mean time, the base colorhas been added.
Today I added the first layer of weathering by applying a pin wash of black oils to one of the carriers...

The carrying "arms" have been constructed too , and I began construction on the mortar itself...

The difference really shows... But lots of work to be done yet...

You're going to need a bigger house.😀 I look forward to see how this progresses. All the best.

I know... I have to see where I will put it down... The dio will be at least 1 metre in length. Not sure how wide yet...

Thanks! You too...

The mortar is also underway... The bottom part is finished, construction wise,  but since I didn't think about the camouflage stripes to be added, the painting has  to be redone partly... 😐

I already came across the next challenge... Someone at Trumpeter must have thought it is realistic if the drivers'seat is only 28 wide, which translates to 8mm in 1:35.  Not only that, also the space between the controls is this small...  Since I am not much of a sculptor, this gives me a headache!!!!   |:(

The Karl itself is taking shape. Dry fitted the main components to get a size impression (note the partial figure for size comparison). Enough  work remains to be done, specially around the plattforms and fitting of small parts on the front and rear panel...
Speaking of which: I opted to have 2 of the ladders folded, yet wonder how the folded part was fastened to keep it upright, although the pictures I see seem to have no brackets whatsoever? A holding pin???
As always, comments are welcome :)

Looking impressive.

What kind of diet did you use, to thin the guy down in such a short time?

It is certainly a big chunk of heavy metal... The real thing was 11m long 😮

Scalpel and file diet ;)

All parts are in place, with a layer of brown primer and a base coat of dark yellow on. Waiting for the two camouflage colors. Actually not looking forward to this, as I have never done it before. ..
In the meantime I started on the next kit: Sabre models 0mmr flatbed rail car.
A nice build, without peculiarities. Only the instructions are a bit awkward in places. But nothing that is impossible to do. Just read carefully.

The camouflage is on. Rather satisfied, considering the fact that I wasn't really looking forward to it. This was my first time ever in tackling camouflage...
Now for the details and weathering.
Comments welcome!

Many thanks for your encouraging words...

Yeah, the original device was 11 meters long. The dio will be about 1,5 meters long.. Not sure how wide yet.

I've been busy with the painting of Karl... Making progress, but not worth posting (I think)...

In the mean time, the construction of Sabre Models 0mmr flatcar wagon has reached new hights and can be considdered finished.
Except for the air hoses, used for the braking system, of course. I will add these once the cars will be connected, probably from lead wire. The ones included are designed to hang limp, in which state they ar not really usefull.
But so far, it is ready to receive paint.

*Alert* For those who thought I was completely dormant the last weeks, here come a lot of pics!

The flatcar is finished (left the air hoses off on purpose). Awaiting it's load. Building was rather well, except for the wheels and bumpers, whis are made of another type of plastic, and responded not so good to glue. And the instructions are a bit cryptic in some places. The biggest challenge however was the painting of the planking. I think the result is rather ok.

Not only that, but Karl itself is also ready. This piece de resistance only misses its tracks.
These have been in back order for quite a few months now. According to my LHS, Friul is not really
trustworthy these days. Does not respond to inqueries by both retailers, or importers alike...

827303-36520-73-1440.jpg

Further more I started the ammo panzer, yet came accross a inexplicable goof from Trumpy:
if  you want to use all the supplied PE, you need 109 PE boltheads. (2x 6  for the towing brackets, 6x 18 for the ammo box mounts), yet a fret of 100 is included (no, I did not count wrong: for each bolthead, an indentation is included).
827938-36520-73-1440.jpg

BUT, things get even stranger: the plastic parts show only 14 boltheads???
So which one is correct???

Fabulous. The ground level pictures look very realistic. The paint and weathering is great.

Those ladders you wondered about, I've seen them before. The hinge pin/bolt is in a slot. lift the lower part and it folds down.

Can you imagine trying to drive this monster! Or being part of the maintenance team for the tracks. Or the engine(s)?

And, who planned how to get it to it's firing point from the railway and then back again?

Very impressive,  great work on both the Karl and the flatbed of which I particularly like the weathering. Your doing the munition carrier/loader too, that will make for a very neat looking collection.

Great work

Thank you very much. I figured that a vehicle that just travelled more than 600km by rail during the summer would be rather dusty.. :)
It must have been quite an operation to get these monsters in action. Not only the operating crew, but every thing around it too: from ammo and fuel to transport, both by rail and by road (for longer road hauls, they were broken down in to 4 loads, transported by Culemeyer trailers and assembled by their own 35 tonne Friess crane). I guess several hunderd men must in total must be in action for 1 gun.
