Thunder Models Scammell Tank Transporter

Recommended Posts

So, as the Matilda heads to be painted and the Type 16 awaits paint, I am starting my next build. This one will probably take me the rest of the year but hey, mad not to start it. I have a couple of reviews with some scratch build improvements I will look to try (nothing horrendous I think) but I still think I must be mad! 14 sprues, 1 clear sprue, 3 sheets of PE. The biggest build I will have attempted. Only problem is, at the moment I have the wrong radiator (manufacturing issue on initial run) and no response from Thunder Models as to whether that are still shipping the replacement..

This will be a North African theatre build so that the Matilda can be mounted on the back...

usual sprue box etc shots...

As I am waiting to hear on the radiator I thought I would start with the (simpler?) trailer...

I'll take a seat and follow along if you don't mind? Will look good with your Matilda chained down on the back!

OK, so started the trailer. The bed was very thin but with the first length-wise strut it has firmed up. Wheels done as well (plastic is fairly brittle so not looking forward to some of the fiddly bits and there are some large sprue gates & pour nubs around)..

Super project! I'll follow you with great interest. 👍Maybe one of these year I'll make my Scammell with TRU30 trailer (even if I don't understand the differences with the TRU30 Goose trailer).

The Goose-neck is the bottom one. The way the trailer attaches to the tractor unit is designed differently so that the trailer bed sits lower at the front.

The bottom image has been flipped to give a comparison.

OK, so more progress. Ramp in progress (just dry fitted to the trailer bed at the moment). a few little gaps but they are filled. Should've read the instructions as there are 2 pieces that go on either side of the bed under the bogies - just manged to get them in place and gaps filled - would've been much easier to fit before the bogies (as the instructions told me)!!!!

Ooh nice, I'll be following this! I did the wee Airfix version a while back and even thought about getting this big boy too, and maybe I will later on. I just love the look of the tractor.

as I have said, so far so good - any mistakes are min not the kits, going together really well (having said that, I think the tractor unit will be more complicated)

Thunder Models confirmed any replacement radiator would be after COVID situation clears up. Not sure whether to go with the wrong radiator or to wait (and probably start something new)
