The movie's about a destroyer captain (Tom Hanks) escorting a WWII North Atlantic convoy. Looking at the movie's trailer, Tom's ship looks like a Fletcher class. There's also a glimpse of what looks like a Flower Class corvette. As it turns out, 548 was one of two USN destroyers (548 & 549) that actually had their production cancelled. The USN hull number series from 498 to 597 was assigned to Fletcher class destroyers. Although the movie was based on actual events, is looks like the writers used a little literary license, at least when it came to the ships. Looking at the movie trailer at 1.52 you get a good look at the ship - flush deck and the five single turrets. The previous classes had a raised foc'sle deck and four turrets. And my reference book confirms John's comment above that the construction of DD-548 and 549 were cancelled. It looks like Tom Hanks was given command of a whiff, and whiffs, of course, can sail anywhere. All that aside, it looks like it will be a good movie. I know a bit about literary licence, I wrote a novel based on a fictional Fletcher-class destroyer, it's here if you're interested 😉 Bit of a dark horse there Alan that book looks like it will be an interesting read Well got the vallejo gel on first coat and I put it on fairly thick in places using a cake decorating spatula and when spread out stippled with the blade then I used the airbrush on a low setting about 1 bar working from the bow to stern giving it short bursts to smooth down some of the peakes I want to try and give it the look of a calm sea with some light waves dotted around Looks very bright when it is first applied but this is after 24 hours it is now setting in the sunshine on the window and will probably need another couple of days to set fully. beefy66 Posted July 11, 2020 Author Share Posted July 11, 2020 Well nearly a week drying but some parts where I put it on thicker are still a bit soft underneath so made a start on the wave crests with the Still water and the cotton wool. I will have to tone down the blue with a bit of a green oil wash filter it is bright but looking at some holiday snaps it is not to far from what I want it to look like. Surely not 😁 I must confess that when I saw the after-effects of the dremel early on for the oil-canning, I wasn't convinced. But now it's all coming together, it looks the dog's doo-dahs - very realistic especially with the addition of the algae. The colour on the sea-base is certainly not dissimilar to the colour I've seen in the Pacific around the Guadalcanal area. Gent's thank you again for the kind words and likes @Chewbacca after looking online at photos of the Fletcher I was a bit unsure of the bow wave myself but these are pretty sleek looking ships and they almost seem to cut through a sort of still sea up to the bridge area before the main part of the wave breaks out or at least that is what I am trying to achieve with this and my madness with the Dremel had me surprised to but have to admit it was hard work all the grinding and scraping but worth it in the end. Well I have left the fist lot of wool to dry overnight and had a bit of a fright when I was applying it yesterday as the blue looked as though it was bleeding into the wool and had started to discolour it 😱 But has dried out OK just needs another coat on the stern wash and the Olive Green oil wash has given a bit more depth to the sea I think while the base was drying I also added the DC racks and the aft deck stanchions and rope.
