Gent's glad to have you along for the ride I will try and keep it entertaining for you all

Jamie Not sure if that was a typo but I am looking at doing the Measure 12 (MOD) camouflage been looking up on the net at a couple of sites so got the link for this one.

http://www.shipcamouflage.com/

Just need to get some paints now can anybody recommend a good supplier

I will also be trying my hand at some "Oil Canning" on the hull these type of ship had a very prominent pattern to the hull plating

So will be getting out the old angle grinder for this job.

Mod 12 heh?  Interesting and sounds colourful!

I'm interested about the oil canning Beefy.  I've mentioned that HMS Kent  (Type 23) is lined up for a build and I explored oil Canning - I originaly set out to consider Dremel "grinding" which I've seen to good effect on 1/72 U-boats BUT the Type 23 @ 1/350 is a whole lot smaller.

I've been hugely taken by @Michael M's "trompe d'oeil" which he's done brilliantly.  It'll be a lot easier with a single colour hull like F78.  harder with Camo.

Either way - watching with huge interest to see how you get on

Rob I have been trying some canning on 1/350 old paint mule I use an Arleigh Burke class but I think it will require a very small bit to get the effect right looking at some of the online photos of this class

So the practice begins Remember Kids always use the right PPE when using fast rotary tooling

spacer.png

and my smaller Dremel lookalike

spacer.png

First using the Dental burr and then scraping with a fresh curved blade to smooth out and keep the ridge to give the effect of the framework behind

spacer.png

I am trying to copy a method used by @DanielMoscatelli who used to post on BM and another site he has done a very fine example of this kit back in 2010 so hope to get somewhere near his efforts

Good call with the gloves!

But of course especially these days you have to teach the younger generation about hand care :coolio:

well things to do clear the bench then start going through the instructions(Yes I do read them sometimes) lots to plan for bits to scrape off and PE to replace parts

Then build up of the hull and marking out bow and stern

To quote Star Wars, 'look at the size of that thing!'.

Just realised that since coming back to the hobby, all of my completed builds (and most of my current stalled efforts) would fit on that small blue mat on the left of the desk!

Might need more beer in for this...

Well after a bit more looking at photos realized that the gaps I had wear to wide near the bow so redid some and made a start on the grinding out do it rough with the mini grinder bit and then scrape smooth with a curved blade this may take some time

It's looking good - have you thought of using the heavy tape ( you use it to emboss letters on for labels - I can't recall the name and I'm not at home!) to line up and protect adjacent sections?  (??Dymo tape)

Hi Rob I know the type of tape you are on about but I am not looking for a to uniform type of finish having looked over numbers of photos of USS Kidd and USS Cassin Young these ships are showing there age and when looking at the wharf rash /Canning it looks very uneven I am going for Fletcher in WW2 so although some damage would be seen it would not be as heavy as some photos show of her later in her career

So slowly plodding along with this task but had a bit of a break this afternoon missus b wanted the NHS Rainbow to put in the window and she printed an A4 size one to colour in

I then looked at it and went to the garage got some AO size art paper out and set about with my airbrush to practice my artistic side

I know what you are going to say most of you think that I am a bit of an artist of another form but I think it looks OK for my model room window

Well not a lot to show with this very slow process of canning the hull but thought I would do a size comparison to models in this scale

Buttercup sits on top of the fletcher hull and the LSM I completed last year these destroyers must be massive

spacer.png

I also took some time out of grinding and scraping to clean my airbrushes which I am ashamed to say are very abused and only really get a light clean normally but a full strip down and thorough clean was in order

This was what was caked on to them

spacer.png

And while I was cleaning the postman left me a parcel on the doorstep from that very reliable paint and accessories supplier

spacer.png

Cheers Jaime I now have the correct paints for the measure 12 (Modified) scheme and some extras for a future build

Really pleased to see you tackling this, it's a really satisfying build. Mine is also in MS12 and it's buried in the Maritime section somewhere.

Very good work with the oil-canning - hope to pick up a few tips and tricks as I have another one of these with a LOT of aftermarket conversion stuff, so I'll be watching closely!

Cheers for pointing me to your build @Alan P some very good pointers in there but cant see all the photos pity but sure it looks good and agree with comments about the large sprue gates and removing a lot of plastic with the PE replacment parts. that is what I have been doing in between the hull grinding and sanding sessions preparing the main deck parts my mini grinder is getting some stick with this kit so far. :rage:

Well hull grinding done and deks are fitted the eagle eyed amongst you will notice that I have not done the lower part of the hull leaving this smooth not going for a rough bottom  as it will be going into a sea base like most of my models.

I would say it's the other way around - the Flower Class were pretty small for full ocean-going escorts.  The Fletchers were almost exactly the same size as the RN's Leander Class frigates of the 1960s-90s and having served in a couple of them, in bad weather they never felt especially large!

Great work though.  I think I would be somewhat nervous of taking a grinder to the hull as you have especially as at the moment it looks quite harsh but I'm sure that under primer and top coat it'll look very realistic

Beefy,

It looks like you really needed a steady hand to make those indents.  Looking forward to see what they look like when you're finished.

John

Yes slow speed on the mini drill helped keep things steady but this is a slow process if I had tried to do it quicker with high speeds it would have looked worse and you end up losing control that is why I practised on an old kit first

Thanks for that size comparison @Chewbacca gives me a better scale of this ship

Still a lot of work to do on the hull but have cleaned it up with a coat of primer then on to some small scale sanding to blend it all in and in between working on the funnels and deck gun shields
