Un-exciting markings. Typically, units participating in such competitions carry special markings or some other distinctive motif. F-4s and A-10s sometimes had parts of their aircraft chromed.

In this instance, the 363rd jets look like they are fresh out of the paint barn and no tail bands, wing or squadron, are carried. They do carry the Ninth Air Force shield on the right side of the intake and the 363rd shield on the left.

Sven,

Awesome collection of 363rd FW aircraft! I wish I had thought of taking photos of the RB-66's and RF-101's that they were flying back when we were stationed at Shaw in the late 50's!  Just missed the RB-57A's and RF-84F's, doggone it! Thanks, as always for sharing your collection with us. (Soooooo, when are you putting some of your goodies on CD? I would be first in line for a 'Viper Tester's Greatest Hits CD!)

The Vipers are carrying rocket pods which is unusual, thanks Sven

Andy

They're probably SUU-20 Practice Bomb Dispensers which allow the aircraft to carry six practice bombs, typically a 25lb BDU-33 which simulate Mk.82 and Mk.84 low drag bombs or a 5lb Mk 106 which simulates a high drag Mk.82 bomb; the dispenser also carries 4 2.75 inch diameter Folding Fin Aerial Rockets (FFAR)
