robw_uk
Next build while in lockdown. Wanted something I could build up and leave complete for painting later. Thought of trying some modern armour so went for this one. Plan is to do it in "urban digital" squares (3x grey) for something different, inaccurate and to test my masking (going to print my own masks too). Probably start the build at the weekend and take it slow (dont think I will do much more than OOTB) 2020-04-06_02-34-36 by Robert Worth, on Flickr

Bullbasket
As I know more about neurosurgery that I do about JGSDF vehicles, is this a Whatif cammo scheme or did they actually paint it in this? John.
Hamden
Interesting looking project and the camo scheme sounds a great challenge mind if I follow along? Roger

Regards, Steve Yep fully WHIF. Was tempted to go even further and put it as a Rebel Alliance vehicle from Star Wars but that may be a galaxy far away from my skill at masking. Also no real evidence of kit stowage or mods so will leave that part
robw_uk
an example of digital mask. Plan to print on masking sheet (think I have stuff coming you can print on). Some of it isn't "jagged" enough. Each square unit is (in this example) 5mm - may reduce that or perhaps do a combination of 3mm and 6mm to allow more variation. I did see a nice hexagon pattern today (more like "normal" camouflage but the edges are as well sides of a hexagon rather than being wavy ) so who knows, may try that instead. robw_uk
having printed both 5mm and 3mm may go for the smaller.... may tax my cutting skills too much tho 😉
robw_uk
hmm printing on the vinyl not 100% successful - patience is needed to let the ink dry. run a 2nd attempt so will let it dry overnight (and definitetly the 3mm squares win)
robw_uk
So the build started. Some simple bits and some clear. The lights are coloured in with sharpie then backed with silver foil - personally I think its not a bad rendition. phildagreek
Looks good, I’m not sure I could deal with those masks though, they sent my eyes a bit funny just sat here looking at them. Good luck!

Good luck! only need probably 1/4 of them. Have splatted paint on my test kit (1/72 goose) so will do a couple of tests - may end up tri-tone green if the 3 i have in stock work well (if not will go with tri-tone grey)

Good luck! Phil, have used some of my masks (printed on to masking vinyl) on my test kit - using tri-tine green. They go on ok (3mm is a tad small but will stick with it, could do a mix of 3mm and 5mm perhaps). second green is painted so will mask and paint the 3rd tomorrow to see if it works.
robw_uk
Have to love Tamiya kits. Go together really well. This one has moveable steering but parts not overly fiddly... really enjoying it IMG_20200412_171307 by Robert Worth, on Flickr IMG_20200412_171257 by Robert Worth, on Flickr IMG_20200412_171318 by Robert Worth, on Flickr and fimally my proof of concept for digital camouflage worked (could;ve done with a better contrast of greens but thats not the scheme I am going for). Mask goes on really well, just takes time to cut out!!! The 1/35 scale will give more scope for variation in pattern as well - and yes it will be tri-tone grey (not sure which grey paints yet but I like AK interactive as pre-thinned and Vallejo model air so will look at those). Hamden
Camo looks good Rob but very time consuming though! Looking forward to seeing it on your Type 19 Stay safe Roger

Looking forward to seeing it on your Type 19 Stay safe Roger time is something I have plenty of at the moment (well apart from work). But yes - probably 30 min masking for a 1/72 Goose (wingspan @ 15-20cm). I think it will make the Type 16 look different and will push me at a time when I dont have full access to all my modelling stuff, taking my time is part of the plan
robw_uk
more work. Suspension/drive train & wheels all done (rubber wheels which are ok but at least the hubs are removable to aid painting). On to the turret which, to me, is a really nice shape and calling out to be "digitised" IMG_20200413_154009 by Robert Worth, on Flickr IMG_20200413_155552 by Robert Worth, on Flickr IMG_20200413_170638 by Robert Worth, on Flickr IMG_20200413_163953 by Robert Worth, on Flickr IMG_20200413_163956 by Robert Worth, on Flickr

robw_uk
Decision on paint - AK Interactive going with Sky Grey (light) English Grey (medium) Ash Grey (dark, just off black I think) with the lower hull/running gear/wheel hubs the English Grey (or perhaps vary depending on the wheel)
robw_uk
oohhh tempted to go 4-tone with light stone from the AK Interactive Caunter set . Not to add colour but to provide a light contrast... will see when all paints arrive
