KV-1, YA vizhu protivnikov

Recommended Posts

Thank you Lloyd, I am happy that you like this approach. I don't hold any patents for this technique really ;)

I tried to attempt the weathering similar to the Adam Wilder kv Videos. Coincidentally,  Mig Jimenez also juat uploaded a video with oil paint modulation on YouTube.

I am done with the base coat now. Did some work to the fenders and an extra time on the wheels and quickly put it together for finishing the second chapter.

wow....that looks a beast....nice paint job..........Do you intend to do weathering, chipping etc Soeren?

Simon.

Now that I have this diverse basecoat I can follow the next step of the 30ish episodes of the Wilder series you once brought to my attention, which is the shadows and pin wash, that is around episode 5 😬

Another week later, after doing the base coat in acrylics, then the oil paint modulation, now was the pinwash with a 50:50 mix of Ammo of MIG Dark Wash with Track Wash for a dark reddish brown color. Pushing the green towards a warmer looking appearance and enhancing the detail.

The running gear and wheels got some additional treatment. The wheels rims were also painted in Mr color burnishable steel color.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hey there, have been busy with some things so limited modelling time.

I decided to do chipping but not the Light color with filled dark color, but a dark color overall instead.

First I went with some dry brushing with the nes Abtl. 502 Copper Oxide Green (great color )

spacer.png

Then I went on with some Sponge chipping with the darker Green from the Lifecolor set.

I guess now would be the time with some brush chipping.

Had itrunning outside tonight and had a blast. Well it is a tank anyway, right? :D
Honestly, it is running fantastic and feels perfectly solid.
I hoped for some dirt to acumulate, what the soil was to hard packed from the rain. Maybe next time.

Under natural light in the sunset one gets the best impression of the colour.

Following the Adam Wilder KV 1 series it was now rust tones on all the chipping. I see the benefit of light chis filled with dark colour here. I really thinnes the rust tones down while blending. Other than that. It adds some nice additional shades. Never did that before.

I just tried the speckle distressing. Mixed a greenish oil filter and added some pigments. Then applied it as sprinkles with a stiff bristled brush. Those dots were very light when dried. So Took another stiff brush and rubbed it down to better blend it with the surface. It is not very obvious at first and can mostly be seen under certain angles. This is a speckle filter ;)

Exactly, and guess what: although I build a few models since getting  back into the hobby, I didn’t do many exhausts. This approach was much different in starting with a blueish white and then layering up to the rust and burned and   faded color. The tutorial by A.W. was straight forward, easy to follow and I like the he result a lot.

Ok, on to the next phase...

Dirt!

Started with a custom texture paint, AK terrain past colored with various acrylic paints to achieve a very dark desaturated brown with a hint of green. Only to the lower hull at first.

spacer.png

Then went for a pigment mix to use. Basically left to right is the composition from most to least.

spacer.png

Applied over Ammo o Mif earth effects enamel paint, additionally fixed with VMS enamel fixer and in areas washed out with Abtl 502 matt effect Thinners. Washout with Thinners results in even more effects and shades, I particularly like the Ochre, that when it breaks up looks like clumps of clay :).

spacer.png

Now waiting for the Valejo Russian Earth Splatter effects product to finish this up.

Then tried myself o the exaggerated exhaust dirt. Started with covering the area with the AK pencil dark earth followed by AK engine oil and some Vallejo smoke Pigments and some Ammo of MIG Track wash. After that used the AK pencils Dark Earth and Streaking Dirt on the Exhaust area and engine door and fenders (fantastic for this tank as it is an olive brown, used that on the Exhausts to tone some vibrant green down a bit)

The pencils were in my paint bosx for some months now, they really work well. Washed on and reashaped they wash out and show various tones from one pencil. Would say they are real easy to control and are a good start for adding dirt.

Also used them to shade the barrel cleaner tube. Have to have a look for some more colors 👍

Also added some from the Rainmarks pancel here. Ah and some pigments around the turret. The Fixer ist still drying.

Now working on one of the final parts, have an ABER oil canister incoming. This is now the saw and the holder. Fiddly stuff and a pity you dont see the saw really. What apity. Both stained already, need to paint the grips and the brass parts and then add the final two wingnuts.

Good afternoon, a bit more done. added some more dirt to the motor deck and around the turret and started blending more with the AK pencils. A lot more dirt and dust stains. When you blend these pencil colors they tend to wash out creating tonal differences. I like that.

spacer.png

Chipped and rusted the barrel cleaning pod and finished the saw and holder.

spacer.png

The final two wingnuts were a nightmare. They always broke on me, in the end I used the last too halves and tried to get them together. The final two wingnuts were a nightmare.

spacer.png

Also got the lubricant tank with the last order for my new Tiger from Axels modellbau. Orderd the reference kit and the Schumo barrel and muzzle brake and the ABER cleaning rods.

That tank should add a nice touch to the otherwise rather plain fenders.

This really is looking very special now especially the extra weathering you have done.....big scale gives so much more freedom and epic chances for superdetailing..fantastic job.

Thanks @M3talpig indeed even the clumsy inexperienced modeller like me can get some decent looking detail in here. I plan to do the Tamiya Tiger to do next with all the ABER upgrades, so even more details, should take me forever though ;)

Just a quick update about an observation while working with the AK weathering pencils. I used two pancils on this panel the majority is the Earth pencil a rich dark brown for the backs and the sides and the Streaking Dirt pencil for the front and blended into the Earth on at the corners.

I applied the pencils damp to wet. And this makes a big difference in the results. When damp to moderatly wet you get the solid color. When really wet it wants to seep out some of the pigments, which in the case of the Earth pencil is a rusty orange brown. So by applying damp to wet you get the dark brown with a rust effect around the features like bolts. etc. Cool thing that can be really usefull. When blending with a wet brush it exactly does the same seeping out the reddish and brownish colour on the corners leaving a thinner dusty appearance.

spacer.png

When applied really heavily you can darken the effect and this will result in an even darker wet looking effect. Well that is all done with one single pencil. You can also do streaking like on the front here.

spacer.png

For these properties I would rate those pencils highly, one pencil is about 1 € and it is a water based product, and reworkable unless covered by a varnish.

Thanks Kris. That is actually a really good point you have there. While there are plenty of PE sets available for this feature there are none for the only large scale kit. So I didn’t bother attempting to shape these ABS pieces or even dream about to cut them from brass. But yes, it would have really added realism to this build.

Quick update, after finishing work payed some attention to the oil canister.

Brings to mind something i was told by a wiser older modeller.....treat every component as if it were a model in it's own right. Well done.
