1/72 C130J

Recommended Posts

Finished this morning, my latest build, Italeri's 1/72 C130J.

Plenty of inaccuracies / suspect fit in places, as well as the size made this tricky.

Painted in Tamiya paint, I was real happy with the finish, but then disaster when clear coat was applied, it changed to a much darker shade and resembled the old US airforce dark green scheme seen on the C5 :( Given time is not an issue and I have little else to do, I re painted it all again. Not as good as my first attempt as its a bit darker.. Slight bit of decal silvering too as they were applied direct to the matte paint, but hey-ho!

and the disaster... at this point I was doing to go rogue and paint it in an imaginary matte black, scheme with a skull on the tail & shark tooth nose art...

In spite of the disaster, the final result look really good! Of course, i woul've looked awesome in black with a shark's mout, too…

I know about the idiosyncracies of the Italeri kit – I built one with my six year old grandson last year. It was a good thing that I realised in time that I had to glue little plasticard tabs on the inside of each door frame – otherwise, the door just fall through.

Nice modelling!

Kind regards,

Joachim

The main issue I had was the weight of the wings after handling for masking and painting etc caused the 2 halfs of the fuselage to split apart slightly.

Anyone making one in future- add some card to the inside to strengthen it.

That's come out a nice model, well done.

I always find many colours change alarmingly when glossing for decals, but generally revert to the expected once a coat of Matt or satin varnish is applied.

Cheers

Lovely Herc, haven’t built one of these since I was 10.

Used to love seeing them fly, especially once when I was playing cricket in Bath and a pair flew down the valley above the A36 and we could only see the wingtips from the pitch.

Cheers Rich

C130! What a classic!

I see the RNZAF has just ordered five new-build C130J’s, Not bad considering the base airframe first flew in... 1954 IIRC.

great looking model by the way. 👍
