Canadian LAV III

Recommended Posts

Right then, having retired early just before Christmas I should now be on a holiday of a lifetime, but obviously I'm not, this was going to be a project for my return but i thought i might as well crack on with it now. This was a Christmas present from one of my girls and the other girl got me the add on.

The kit gives you a couple of options to build, with nice clear instructions and a concise pait guide (it's green).

I started this a couple of weeks ago, the day after the holiday was cancelled, so I've been working away at it.

This is the rear box / pannier / stowage. There is a fair bit of detail on the top of it which I've removed because this lot from the add ons is going to sit on top of it.

And now a couple of turret and upper hull ready for painting shots.

A couple of points, I've added the white plastic jerrycan holders on the rear basket, the included ones were flimsy and fiddly photo etch and I didn't get on with them! I've seen some photos of larger ones so I thought I would go with them. The rear of the turret has changed, I've got rid of the basket and I'm going to use the add on resin part now I've figured out how to mount it. It's really well detailed but no instructions!

Speaking of add on parts.

And a home built satcom antennae, not sure about it, a bit more refining but we'll see.

And......

I like to add a figure or two to my models, especially AFVs, I think itgives them a sense of scale. I saw a photo of a Canadian LAVIII with a sentry on stag sat on the turret some time ago and that is what really gave me the inspiration for this so I set out to recreate it, the figure i wanted couldn't be found but then I found these and they gave me this and that's a pretty good match for what I was after.

Some painting then, I'm trying this idea of extreme pre shading with a black base and white upper surfaces, i have my doubts but hey let's try it.

The overall colour is going to be Humbrol Matt 030 which i think they call NATO green but is suggested as a good match for Canadian green. This first coat will have a splash of matt black added. And you are up to date, kind of, it's had a first coat of green but I haven't taken a photo yet.

Okay, now you're up to date. The green base coat is on, you can certainly see how the pre shading black and white has worked.

Keeping plodding on, I'll give this a couple of days to dry out and then the final coat.

I've seen these on Canada Highway 1 and yours looks very good.

An update!

Not much done over the weekend as Saturday morning started with me picking up a lot of the fence that had decided to lie down for a rest! Got that sorted (kind of) and I got some time in the shed this morning having bodged the fence for another year.

The postie brought these on Saurday morning to replace the rather nasty black plastic ones in the kit, whilst they're not covered in a manufacturer's name they are certainly an improvement on the kit items & cheap! Just a tenner off that evil bay including postage and I've wasted little time getting them onto cocktail sticks for painting.

Of course it's not all beer and skittles, every solution just brings a new problem in this game doesn't it? I've seen quite a few photos of this vehicle with the front wheels turned in the direction of travel and I rather like that so that's what we're going for. But, these replacement wheels aren't for this kit in particular and so the hubs don't quite fit. Although there are 8 wheels (well 9 if you count the spare) it is actually two sets of four.

The first set of four have a wider hub and these are a "good" fit for the front attachment bits/holes/suspension legs/things but the rear ones are really narrow and don't come close to fitting. So a bit of time last night fiddling around looking for a solution and do you know, I might have just done it.

49735459177_6aeac8c841.jpgLAV 38 by phil da greek, on Flickr

The narrow hub has had clear plastic tube glued on to it, this is the tube you get to protect your paint brush when you buy it. The outside dimension of the tube is exactly the same as the inside dimension of the hub & cut to length for the hub and give it a smidge of clearance to hold the wheel off the model in a scale clearance sort of deal. So the plan is to paint it all up and then gently file until it fits in to the hub and glue that bad boy in place.

A little bit of detail painting started on the turret baskets,

And then what could well be the final colour onto her, very freshly done and needs some serious drying time.

There we go, up to date with progress so far. I'm happy with it and pretty confident about work so far, any thoughts or comments then please chuck them in. Thanks for looking in & stay safe.

Update.

Main body and turret are completed and painted, gloss varnished with the very few decals applied and then matt varnished on top, now set aside for a little while.

Resin wheels are painted up & drying prior to being weathered, they appear much darker in the photo.

49776966252_6afac0bbe2.jpgLAV 48 by phil da greek, on Flickr

And then the fiddly painting of the turret baskets and the load for the rear pannier/container. How many shades of green?

Concentration behind the magnifying visor for those baskets and making sure you've got the right green on the brush before you commit it! Still lots to do, the Squaddie is still sat to one side in shades of grey primer waiting to join in for one thing but i think next will be to weather the wheels and the underside and then get this bad boy up and see if I can get all 8 wheels touching the ground and the front four turning in the same direction!

Thanks for looking in.
