Constructing a Convair 580 using Mach 2 Convair 440

This might be of some interest here... I have built a couple of Convair 580s  now by converting Mach 2 kits and using Allison 501s from a Hasegawa P-3C kit. I also used resin C-130 E/H props to complete the conversions :). A good set of drawings come in handy...

here we go again! The retirement of the last Convair 580 in NZ has seen me get a couple of requests to build a couple of models of the last aircraft: ZK-CIB flying with Air Chathams. Its a combi conversion of the original aircraft so in addition to updating engines etc  (and scrapping a Hasegawa P3 kit!) I had to infill cabin windows and scribe in a cargo door. Here's progress so far  :). Have to admit that Mach2 plastic is absolute SH**! and without half a packet of Milliput, this model is not buildable (even with the original piston engines)!

They bring back memories of having bounced around in rising Texas thermals back in the early 80's.

Would those have been Texas International or the famous TTA (Trans Treetop Airlines)?

LOL!  Neither!  Frontier Airlines from Dallas Ft-Worth to Lawton, OK, via Wichita Falls.  I remember seeing B-52Ds and F-101s lined up on the ramp at Shepherd AFB, which shared the space at WF.  Oh, those were the days.

Wichita Falls???? My home town! And SAC did have a B-52 wing based there in the ‘60s, and the son of the wing maintenance officer was my best friend in high school!

Glad it strikes a chord with you!  Alas, I never visited the town itself.  It must've been a tight community back in the 60s, because big air bases tend to do that.  But I digress from the main topic.  Ahem, yes..the Convair 580!  We need a better injection kit of all the Convair twins.  Mach 2 isn't cutting it for me, and I agree this is something Valom should take up.

the fleet has increased by one in last couple of weeks :) The combi ZK-CIB was a commission by an airline employee. I get satisfied with the result, however that Mach 2 plastic is so dreadful to work with!

TTA actually stood for Trans Texas Airways but the airline was commonly called Treetop Airlines.
