follasha
This might be of some interest here... I have built a couple of Convair 580s now by converting Mach 2 kits and using Allison 501s from a Hasegawa P-3C kit. I also used resin C-130 E/H props to complete the conversions . A good set of drawings come in handy... follasha
here we go again! The retirement of the last Convair 580 in NZ has seen me get a couple of requests to build a couple of models of the last aircraft: ZK-CIB flying with Air Chathams. Its a combi conversion of the original aircraft so in addition to updating engines etc (and scrapping a Hasegawa P3 kit!) I had to infill cabin windows and scribe in a cargo door. Here's progress so far . Have to admit that Mach2 plastic is absolute SH**! and without half a packet of Milliput, this model is not buildable (even with the original piston engines)! TheyJammedKenny!
Wow! I'm in awe of your determination on these 580s! They bring back memories of having bounced around in rising Texas thermals back in the early 80's.

Oh, those were the days. Wichita Falls???? My home town! And SAC did have a B-52 wing based there in the ‘60s, and the son of the wing maintenance officer was my best friend in high school!

Alas, I never visited the town itself. It must've been a tight community back in the 60s, because big air bases tend to do that. But I digress from the main topic. Ahem, yes..the Convair 580! We need a better injection kit of all the Convair twins. Mach 2 isn't cutting it for me, and I agree this is something Valom should take up.
follasha
I have to agree...the Mach 2 kit is basically unbuildable without half a packet of Milliput ! It would be nice to see a half decent injection molded Convairliner Edited September 27, 2021 by follasha
Admiral Puff
Only half a packet? You must have got a good one ...

stevehnz
Those look awesome Harry. I hadn't realised they had retired them. I'd be happy with one in 1/144, they look good in a nice modern scheme like Air Chatham's. Steve.
follasha
Easiest way to go in 1/144 Steve, is the Welsh CV580, I did one years ago. The Bristol & Argosy are also Welsh Untitled by Harry Follas, on Flickr 7
follasha
...its starting to resemble "Convair Corner" here again, if anybody knows NZ's Auckland International Airport they'll get the drift IMG_6032 by Harry Follas, on Flickr I'm building ZK-CIE this time for a Air Chathams captain IMG_6073 by Harry Follas, on Flickr

I've been watching this Welsh 440 with an eye to converting to ZK-CIF given, as Harry knows, she is now resident on my street. It's also quite cheap!
follasha
the fleet has increased by one in last couple of weeks The combi ZK-CIB was a commission by an airline employee. I get satisfied with the result, however that Mach 2 plastic is so dreadful to work with! Marc the Builder
Very impressive, as I have build the Mach2 DC-4 I know what a hassle they are and you really did a cracking job on these.
