WV908
Hi all, I'm struggling to find references for this and I'd like to know what the external differences are between the Javelin FAW.8 and FAW.9 as I plan on building FAW.8 XH992 from the 1/48 Airfix FAW.9 kit. I know the radome is shorter for one, but looking at the alleycat set, it's suggested that the front half of the cockpit is different too? 71chally
There's a good recent thread on this already, so worth doing a search for that as it features some good info. The FAW.8 front fuselage structure is shorter (same as the 6 and 2), the radome itself isn't that much shorter than the 9, but slightly different in shape and features the angular join, as seen in plan view, to the fuselage. Beyond that, the two versions are essentially the same with the reheated Sapphires and leading edge camber to the outer wings.

Thanks, I had a search through but couldn't find anything - I tried googling it too with a britmodeller tag which usually brings up results better than the website's own search but still nothing. Are you able to link it please? Thanks, WV908

cherry268
I'm at work and bored. Graham Boak
Isn't the radome actually fatter, the US radar having a larger dish?

It would have to be Graham as the radome abutted up against the windscreen on the 6 and the 8. Dick Ward provided conversion dimensions to Mk.8 from Mk.9 on MD sheet 30 but that was for the old Frog kit and involved moving the canopy forward as the original kit was inaccurate anyway. He also stated that the difference in length between the 8 and 9 was 13.5inches. Dennis PS - It might be worth me putting it up - I'll scan and post here From Modeldecal Number 30 :- 1

WV908
Yeah it looks like I'll be getting the alleycat set. Way too much work to try and 3D print and then graft on that 3D printed nose. The conversion comes with the decals I need anyway. Thanks for the help, links and info all Cheers, WV908

Thanks for the help, links and info all Cheers, WV908 I think @Lord Riot did the same conversion and I think that's where some of the info was. From memory I didn't think the difference in lengths was as much as what Dick Ward says, but could be wrong there. 71chally
Here's some threads, note consensus seems to be that there isn't alot of difference in the total length of the aircraft, the FAW.8 airframe is shorter but then the radome length is longer. One thing I've always wanted to do is to properly measure various points of an FAW.8 & 9 to establish the differences accurately. Good pictures in the walkaround, notice the proximity of the nose band and radome to the windscreen, important for accurately placing the Alleycat nose 1
Lord Riot
This was my result. I got the resin nose from Freightdog Models. 3
