Tamiya Ford GT

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I don't seem to to have created a thread for this one, so I decided to do it now:

This is the exquisite Tamiya Ford GT model:

y4mUV7-bh6CGz-_q9rE9g3aEeHNTXQRh3ouJbMYL

So far, I have assembled the main parts of the body, and this is where I have got so far:

y4mGH5MnrInkkHxb9_wRM-H1Nv5cvyTJprvtRtsf

y4mcMTQIZxPDtCchUS5PxTQMM4QTIM1eCiASrvvj

I have to share my work-space with various stored items not immediately needed...

y4mYZqFKhPQiJFox_bgob16Lpnu4FNuVcE9LVs4V

The fit of the body was superb, with join lines matching the panel lines on the real thing as far as I can tell.

I have done more than this, but I have no photos yet.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers,

Alan.

Hi All,

I have decided to bring this back to the top of the pile.

I had primed the body and, this weekend, I smooth sanded the primer ready to accept the colour coat. I chose the Zero Paint 'Ingot Silver', specially formulated for this car.

I managed to get a smooth coat on the underside, but I think that I got a bit overconfident and spoilt the finish on the roof. I think that it reacted with the plastic underneath,

The lesson to lean here is to not lay it on too thick!

So, I carefully sanded the affected areas, starting with a 240 grit, which took it back to the primer. Then I finished with a 2500 grit to smooth it:

y4mvgEa0yYmKUaDjygNz2wegwrc9YPjzwpOq8jnm

y4m8R6tmqGcPooHuseCGMGBCWhm3IJgak1jjbeC6

The camera has been a bit kind here, I think.

Now I am trying to be a bit more sparing re-covering the affected areas.

Thanks for looking,

Alan.

I'm sure it'll turn out great despite the paint issue. It's a fantastic kit of a fantastic car, I've built this one also. I'm almost tempted to build another.

Evening all,

Some more progress on this.
As I said, the paint had rippled, so I sanded it back, but still had some primer left on it, so I carefully re-sprayed the silver on, but despite the thin layers the paint still 'rippled'!

So, I sanded the paint back to the plastic on the roof and the nose as these were that affected areas.

I then used some 600 grit to smooth it out, followed by 1220, 2500, Tamiya Lapping film, the buffing it with Halfords rubbing compound. The result was a polished finish, just like the original plastic.

y4mvgEa0yYmKUaDjygNz2wegwrc9YPjzwpOq8jnm

This was mid-sand.

y4m_r1fzJ4x8qF09ML7f4y25R0rUn5izl99AInA8

Here's the roof and nose sanded and polished back to the plastic.

I then cracked out the silver again, and applied primer, let that cure for about 48 hours before spraying several very light coats of silver over the affected areas.

This time it was successful. I polished it up a bit after it had cured, and it looks good.

After all of that, I sprayed some gloss black (Tamiya X1) over the front and rear valances. I had previously performed some surgery to add some Hobby Design grilles to the valances. The last step was to paint the grills satin black:

y4mSVc96JZdysiSsH_7WbvAg35rJhZ4e3XFbtIe8

I then masked the undertray and sprayed various parts gloss black, thus:

y4mmhTc-8b7t0Yh0-rYBs1rftkQXnKJ6u0ZGkB4O

The glossy bits need a little buffing to get them fully glossy.

I masked the side windows using the Tamiya Masks. A bit of a bugger to apply, but when applied, they fit perfectly.

y4mVgJWlIkSHFwvkZ3e2ehXjO1kPwIE5qhBO--Ea

Masks removed:

y4m1YZ7SmRVFz1YvllP0HDz68RBdLrsw3c6bM2MR

That's all the really difficult bits done, I think.

There's some of the Hobby Design mesh bits to fit, but I think they should be OK.

More later.

Thanks for looking,

Alan.

Hi All,

Just a very minor update on the GT.

I have embellished the dash-board with some photo-etch:

y4mpOxJd9lYFr9Az_xTd_Ve4r9ZzLWKIInDayE0y

It looks like the trim isn't attached all way round, but I don't think that's the case.

I'll try to get some more done soon.

Thanks for looking,

Alan.

Hi All,

I have decided to enhance the already fine Tamiya Ford GT with some photo-etch from Hobby Design.

Most of the grilles (for want of a better word) are actually clear parts with decals to represent the mesh of the grilles.

I have been using the Hobby Design set to replace those parts/ So far, so good.

Anyway, there are the next bits:

y4mHUEfGHgkzlvZvJM6Q0nPP76s7KOexYekFd2iO

The picture is a bit blurry, I think the camera got a bit confused.

I have primed then in grey, ready to cover in Abbadon Black. These do look a lot better installed rather than the clear bits with decals.

More to come.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers,

Alan.

Hello All,

Finally, an update!

I had been using the Hobby Design Photo-etch set to replace all the vents with more realistic PE grilles.

This was a bit tedious, but worth it in the end:

y4mMq8n2zz5Fvb9IQ2TPxuy6-Qh5X0mjhNuQcxBG

You can just see the grilles here at the back of the body shell.

The tail-lights were installed, again some PE was installed in them.

The rear of the lens was painted in Molotow Chrome, and the outside parts painted with Tamiya Clear Red.

If you look very carefully, you may (or may not!) see the PE inside the rear lights.

y4mqnxA3Un3Xo94bYbnmqhJvAPTM8wyEaxgHT9dS

The headlamps are mini kits in their own right. I think that there are 15 parts (including the extra photo-etch) in each unit.

They were a bit fiddly to assemble, but once made up, they just slip into place.

y4mAysYMIfdZy8unyXpf31A72Tb9svGQ2NA7V8JS y4mWnX4r0KtOK2-xd6j8zFvHGEZU2U4YRelh0wx4

y4mRY7BRojH89Fr2NNTB9A-8niWFFiBCdkLl77Ko

And here they are, fitted in the body shell:

y4mHLpAct1O_M9uQqw0n6jBj_rj1RswqFyW1Zp-9

The rear end. Some bits installed, including the exhaust pipes.

y4m05gEHh0GO_cfa8mmzMZjDYR3YSEj5BWSu8FpN

What most people will see (if they get a chance), rapidly diminishing in size!

y4mWyO289UKb-gJ1Ct6Yk3EzpVHJ_1TGSk1sPY7V

Oops! Needs some attention!

y4mXB_rIJtsqLWhXt0Ec4Tp-vnuDEMHzS5bMs2jb

y4mIAzGyXAdAu63uu8zbRFooYdiiETeb06Dd0Cch

Those side markers are painted with Molotow Chrome on the inside and Tamiya Clear on the outside. The fit here is superb. All attached with Hi-tack PVA glue.

y4m_SuqkmrKATXg_59_4W_FDrMR9fBOY5deRTeeV

The rear-view mirror with the Tamiya mirror 'decal'. It was more shiny than the PE bit provided with the Hobby Design set.

PVA glue is definitely the safest adhesive where windows are concerned.

y4mbhri3y2ZPoYiMngd2H6ZsXYA95HoreJfL71xt

From above. Windshield wipers installed, also glued in with PVA glue.

y4mDuflrkHL6eoRcLDJhHRxgi0Qq7BKKc63-Q4C4

All the glazing installed. I very nearly just 'clicked' into place. I have secured it with PVA glue, just to be safe.

y4mkWAqvHinNDypDfQUZ8-IBREOpNvjq1z9CxqTn

Front suspension, partially installed. Ready for the front axles and steering rack.

From another angle.

I have made further progress, I just haven't captured it in pixels yet!

Thanks for looking.

Cheers,

Alan.

Evening all.

Some more progress on the Ford GT.

I installed the front and rear sub-frames on the floor pan:

y4msAqWtL3P2MXNGm9KyzxqrJZcMPr3f3aoIaRHr

y4mt5di-82-1M4JPXq80zPvIVA5Dxd0DfBdJcZ47

y4m_GWFrDHAflRNdtkC-DN8p05ptJ1StI-S2lHOb

y4m9uuNOcArXYE8GC3Deb5lKViaFpalla0gArNdl

They just 'click' into place, but a small application of cement fixes them into place.

The seats, all brush painted (I couldn't be bothered to crack out the air-brush...)

y4mEE_dMK32kNgpEaJLPmfBNSoDcXN477RhzlwN-

The completed dash-board:

y4mEKHSd2Y82JNFFJWzWd5vlELAxq-ouKKtF2Sr2

The cock-pit assembles: This thing almost falls together.

y4m0zErdKCz3iFVPI-SF5i0U_7B96Jpja_d8bPdn

One thing I have learned (Why it's taken me so long, I haven't a clue), is to be more patient, Give all the paints and glues time to cure.

I am finding that I am enjoying the process much more. Instead of ploughing on and mucking things up. If a stage needs time to cure, then stop working on it and come back tomorrow.

The results are much better, I think.

Philosophical moment over! :)

y4me2w79NJzmKKizgwbzp69ERIvUqYgY_CBo_BDD

Bit blurry this one. Need to use the tripod...

y4mE2wFB4O_J3BSAqp-r_tS0JC48UfGfiJMfBXlm

Ditto...

y4mBMOQ4a7Z5OqIGWdlGfWcI8lXJmHjwMAQrI0Ys

Cock-pit installed on the floor pan:

y4m5s9wObfxfz81pnle8XAYfhhbg_4SBmRknjhQU

y4mIUsY8Yjd-5PIWfAQrQDsmXgYuon-RyRXCeMrf

 The top of the engine:

y4mNvSYJZKpwG_QcV1Wvlg3FhPfSNO6hHJhh3c1F

A lot blurry!

More engine bits. Not much to the engine, rally, just the top.

y4mFd-GejVoIV3JGq8n6HZsI-oN3wpF-Jlf4mNun

That's it! All the engine bits:

y4m1vAwdPBarE0Jvy6s__BqEs0RCLEU58_2cgptC

Assembled:

y4mrwwjLAf2l-v0But15MtbOF9IdZ0IgKyyAOzQ-

The wheels look quite smart:

y4mDDTnPrAmW-Q2Y99dnHpCHcD4TERdU639cngUK

Getting near the end now. The body and floor-pan united.

y4mXPTue2WaM2GZUnfDSzWUszLhnaxdq9VLdljHT

I had one minor fit issue that I resolved by gluing the body, just before the doors with epoxy resin. That solved the problem.

y4m9KIs5U972XOsZFFdOKXpst5nLBJ9yFjm3NAMs

y4m9KIs5U972XOsZFFdOKXpst5nLBJ9yFjm3NAMs

The paper tissue is acting as a barrier to prevent the clamps from damaging the paint work.

The door mirrors, assembled:

y4muxJwdu47hZI71MMFk6-9D1Q7w7dBumpPuPv0w

All the clamps removed:

y4mPJPxycSmAipcIVs-5I8HTeYHUoEprxNhQziXR

Looking pretty good, I think.

y4mV0FXANPiERtzDuh1cPOa21xzhLCS2rh3dG0DY

y4mcUM11tLdv5fyBxlQo2ZbBeTJ_eF7TBQZYArUm

Very nearly there. Just the door mirrors and licence plate to add.

y4m5hmzGHP8yEm-s19yqShHEF5uS6He_2Y4kLPAh

The licence plate.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers,

Alan.
