Hellcat Mk.I - Eduard 1/48

Recommended Posts

Hi. I would like to join in with a Eduard 1/48 scale Hellcat Mk.I

Hellcat Mk.I JV131, 800 Sqn FAA, HMS Emperor, June, 1944

I don't have the box and the instructions because it is my half of a Dual Combo kit that I bought with a friend (he had the Mk.II)

These are the sprues and accessories that I would like to use.

Good morning
Yesterday I built the bulkhead placed behind the cockpit because it is not provided in the kit but is partially visible from the typical windows of the -3 version

Today, however, I riveted the fuselage halves

I'm looking for a photo of the actual plane but I can't find it, I wouldn't want to be forced to change the subject .. I have 2 other possible choices , even FAA

Quick look at the IWM site gave me these.  HMS Emperor patrolled the Western Approaches as part of Operation Neptune and took part in Dragoon in August..

Somewhere on these hallowed pages there was a conversation about the Fighter bomber operations carried out during Dragoon and the single bomb armament of the Hellcat Is..

Thank You very much @Grey Beemafor the precious information and for the pic!

Now this subject has become more interesting to me because I know the area interested by the operation Dragoon  (VAR in the Southern France), I have been there a few times

Working on a F6F-3 myself.  How did that front cowl piece fit?  I think it was less than stellar.  But with all the different cowl options, it's not surprising.  The edges don't all line up.  If you sand, then you lose rivet details.

The fit is not the best as well as that of the bottom of the fuselage.

I have eliminated the alignment pins to avoid forcing during the gluing. I have not filled and I sanded very little

That's my same assessment too.  I eliminated the alignment pins as well.  I then sanded the inner lip of the the front cowl piece to eliminate any chance of it bottoming out.  Not gone, just not as deep.  If the front piece was a little proud in places I tried to sand it down to avoid a lip.  The back cowl portion I just left as I don't have a good easy way to reproduce the rivets/screw heads (whatever they are).  I don't have a separate color on the front of the cowl, so maybe that will help too.

Yours is lookin awesome so far!  Just getting ready to tackle the paint on mine.

Surely the separate color of the front cowl helps but I already built the same model 11 years ago with another camouflage , I don't seem to have sanded much.
If you only have to sand the front ring, I suggest that you temporarily fix it to a cowling that should not be used, then once you have finished mounting it definitively on the right cowling

(sorry for my bad english)

A lovely build, and great paint finish, I like the weathering you've set it just about at the perfect level, very nice.
