Hello

Paul Wright's illustration in Angus Konstam's book British escort carriers 1941-45 (Osprey) gives HMS Emperor deck colour in 1944 as dark gray with yellow lines and elevator outlines and two large yellow ˝E˝ letters painted on board. It is said that this scheme had been retained throughout the year 1944. The Singapore photo from the webpage you linked us to does not seem to be unlike this scheme, although freshly painted solid center and dotted edge lines (the reverse of what is shown on Wright's illustration) are in stark contrast with badly weathered aft elevator outline. Cheers

Jure

I'd be very surprised if it was originally anything other than Flight Deck Stain 21, the colour the US used to stain wooden flight decks.  Colourcoats do it as US11.   I doubt if it, as opposed to the markings on it, would have been repainted.  Quite what that colour would have looked like after 3 years' service, mostly in hot areas of the world, is anyone's guess.

The ship's hull was probably repainted 2 or 3 times going by how fast it deteriorated and needed repainted on other ships. She likely was delivered and operated initially in US Navy paints from the builder's yard, but when repainted in British service it would have been repainted in the paints in the British supply chain.

By 1945 the early British paints would have all been long gone and thus Emperor would have used the May 1943-onwards G&B (or B&G) series paints for repainting, which limits the options somewhat. If Emperor was indeed repainted as most ships needed to be (no RN officers liked being seen bobbing about in a beat-up mess of a ship) then I'd suggest G10 would be a candidate for the deck after comparing the photos on that website above to the Hellcats.
