D'ya think people could stop falling out with each other over the slightest things? Lawnmowers? Really? We expected people might get a bit cranky during isolation, but it's been a couple of days. Do better. :dull:

Hmm... how do we do better than lawnmowers ?  :hmmm:

My drum kit is in my man-cave, and I was thinking of taking it out into the garden but my nearest neighbours are in their 80s and probably wouldn’t hear them and the next ones are about 350m away. Rats

Reminds me of that joke (can't for the life of me recall who made it). "Couldn't believe it when I found my neighbour banging on my door at 2 in the morning! I mean?!? Thank god I was still up at the time playing the drums"

While the internet can be a useful tool to spread information and knowledge it can also be used to spread disinformation as well thus we need to be careful of our chosen sources.

I completely agree.  Moreover, the Internet is a means of information-psychological warfare aimed at a split in society.  A relatively fresh (fresh for my) example of how this is done in relation to the post-Soviet space.

Declining text and photo some LJ top blogger:

"This is the Yagrinsky forced labor camp for children of enemies of the people, abbreviated as "Yagrinlag."  Children got there only because their parents were objectionable owls.  authorities. And now, lovers of scoop, Stalinists and quilted jackets - tell us about what delicious ice cream was in the USSR."

32458_original.png

Of course, you look first of all at the photo, you are overwhelmed with pity for these children and you are overwhelmed with hatred for this USSR and bloody Stalin, pure emotions .... but here is the original photo:

32848_original.jpg

In the photo - a French orphanage 1916-1917.  These are the orphan kids after the First World War.

But maybe you say the author of the post was simply mistaken with the photo, because there was “Yarinlag” ?!

The original photo was cropped as you see, and this was done specifically because such shoes on the feet of children in Russia as in the USSR simply did not exist, and of course there was "Yarinlag", it was created in 1938, but there were adult prisoners and not children.

This is the first, simple example, of primitive misinformation posted on the Internet.  But you don’t think that this technology works on the Internet only against the post-Soviet space?

Another example related directly to the current situation with virus and this topic.  I will not translate the video, there are some non-censored expressions in Russian from a woman of a supermarket security:

He simply removes how he allegedly takes the last products, and then turning off the camera simply puts them back on the shelf.  Naturally, he writes that he took the last products, look - empty shelves!

As you see technology maked classic fake news for panic and in order to blame official sources and authorities for lying.

As you know, this technology can be used anywhere and in any country.

Therefore, I try to give links either to official sources of information or to what I personally saw or personally participated in.  Unfortunately, not everything that I personally participated in can be confirmed by documents (but this does not mean that they are not*), so to believe or not to believe me is everyone’s personal choice.  However, there are absolutely no guarantees that I myself cannot become a victim of misinformation, including specially created one.

I believe that I have sufficiently explained my principles for the analysis of information, including confirming this with examples.

About the current situation with us.  Officially, 519 people in isolation as returning from European countries, officially no sick.  The population is still rather frivolous about all this.

From yesterday’s visit to grocery stores, I realized that toilet paper and paste is not relevant!  The current deficit here has become .... ginger! Its price has doubled from 220 RUR to 550 RUR (from 4 to 8 dollars) per kg. This is due to the fact that many people think that tea with lemon, ginger and honey is an antiviral and anti-inflammatory agent.  I don’t know how scientifically it is, but I personally   did tincture ginger on vodka several years ago .... familiar doctors noted the good antiseptic properties of this tincture when it was taken inside! 😁😎

I wish you well.  Have you got the required body-armour ready?

According to the laws of the comedy genre, I would have to post a photo of myself completely bandaged with bloodied bandage with gnawed limbs ... a ruined bath ... and a contented but clean cat chewing on my hand with a washcloth held in it.... 😁😁😁

But this will not happen, there will be a photo (when my son will send it to me)

of a mi-mi-mi cat** in the bathroom, because this breed of cats needs to be washed every week, and if he does not wash for a long time, he jumps into the empty bathroom.

🤗

.....and some humor from Russian segment Internet (my adaptation for West, clear translate over Google was obscene) :

"Stages of taking coronavirus:

1) oh watch the news zombie apocalypse lol

2) it's all just beneficial to the government

 3) Media artificially inflate panic

4) oh look, idiots carry supermarkets

 5) well, there will be no vacation in Thailand

 6) IVAN, DEVIL

 TAKE

YOU AWAY,
 GRAB PASTA AND  TOILET

PAPER!!!! WHERE SUGAR IVAN??? "

😁

* - for example, I’m now watching a 3D model of one very interesting and long awaited by many modeller's on this forum, aircraft  .... but I can’t say about its name .... sorry!

** -  will need to ask draw a mask, flippers and scuba gear to him in Photoshop! 😁😁

do you know who I am

When I was stationed in Germany and we went out on exercise, one of the first jobs to be done when we went into a location was for the linemen to run out Don 10 every where for the 40 line F&F's. Once connected, the linemen would keep testing by ringing the other end. On one occasion, the CO got on the line before the linemen were finished and the lineman concerned, a Londoner, kept interrupting his call, and each time that he did, let's just say that he was showing no respect for rank. Finally the Co said, "Do you know who I am?" To which the lineman said "No. Do you know who I am?" "no" came back the reply. "Thank **** for that", and hung up.

"Just took the bins out and got a standing ovation. Made my night; thanks everyone."

I must say that, even though it has to be done, I am no fan of the lawn mower myself as, even in a small village like mine, it is hard to hear the sounds of the country when spring springs because there isn't a day goes by when there isn't someone mowing their lawn and I swear some of them are 1000hp without any form of silencers.

That being said there is absolutely no point in fighting and getting banned from Britmodeller because you don't agree on whether it is OK/considerate to your neighbours to do it or not. It would be different if you lived next door to each other but, as I am guessing that you are strangers to each other it is daft to carry on crossing swords. Both points have been made and 'nuff has been said. We need this thread in these tough times and we don't need it shut down because grown men can't play nice.

Few years ago I actually got doing the 'do you know who I am' response.

TV / radio personality said it to me

I replied 'No, but don't worry, we'll find someone who does and get you back to your carer'

Honest - I really did, and with a straight poker face.

Bagpipes: when I was a postie 40 years ago we had an ex-tankie who was our main parcel driver. He also played the Scots bagpipes. He used to practice a couple of times every week in the parcel shed, from 04.30  to his start time of 05.45. The shed backed on to the local RUC barracks sleeping block   :wicked:

Had something similar, not the 'do you know' bit, just someone throwing their paygrade around.
Well, you're still breathing the same air I am, and I'm pretty sure you have to take a dump like the rest of us.
Keep going like that and see if there's enough sales to keep paying you that salary.

So here we are. The world (mostly) in lockdown. And ITV2 here in the U.K. decides it would be a good time to screen the 2011 movie Contagion. How to cheer the country up!!!

Someone on Twitter just suggested it was a documentary!!!

only our sense of humour will see us through this I suppose!!

Apparently some doctors that are specialists in that sort of thing said a lot of the procedures etc are as close as you can get to fact.

Although I preferred the one with Dustin Hoffman. I forget the name, where the people are stood outside waving their arms at the incoming plane thinking it is there to save them, and instead it drops a napalm! Rather brutal!

He might join us here. After all, he has to self-isolate now.
Wonder what his preference is. A diorama with a ditch? ;)

I have some old Matchbox 1/76 diorama bases that might do the trick.

Seriously though, I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Well, maybe my worst enemy, but BoJo is a very, very long way down the list.

Me too

broke out in a cold sweat, shaking, chest pains, felt faint and dizzy. Thought my final day on earth had come but it was just Mrs T taking a large parcel for delivery of stuff she had ordered to get through the self isolation.

My big parcel from Hannants arrives tomorrow so should be able to sneak it past her after all

Had to restock on perishables this morning , Tesco in town centre queuing around the block so gave that a miss , what passes for a retail park locally half a mile away with Home Bargains , FarmFoods and Lidl all rather quiet but had staff on the door to limit movement to one in/one out if they started to get too busy.     Outing crossed the 1000 witching hour when the booze aisles open up here and traffic did pick up.

Now suitably equipped about to pack up for our weekend away , moving into the spare bedroom for a couple of days to get a change of scenery.

Mrs SD has been very lenient with the several  kit deliveries this week on the basis that it would be irresponsible for me to go to our storage facility to recover (some of) the stash. I wonder how far is safe to push this?
