Troy Smith
here's a poser. Does anyone have details of car manufacture in Egypt, circa 1967? Possibly at Helwan. Specifically, I'm guessing that these would be a licence built version of existing car? The reason, post the 1967 Six day war, legend has it the Egyptian air force hurriedly repainted it's jets with car paint, uppers in dark green and sand, pale blue undersides. On 13/11/2013 at 17:02, Tom Cooper said: Indeed, when Egyptians began applying camouflage on their aircraft, immediately after the June 1967 War with Israel, they used car paints that were available at one of factories in Helwan (and applied them without any varnish, which is contrary to Syrians, who followed in fashion just a few weeks later, but applied varnish before painting)... like this though this is a later image, link says taken in 1981. https://theaviationgeekclub.com/the-story-of-no-26-squadron-black-ravens-mig-21s-the-egyptian-air-force-top-guns-of-yom-kippur-war/ Given car manufature would likely be using a series of stock colours, and idea of what was being built, and if it was existing design, and that paint could then be based on an existing range of car colours, a better guesstimate might be made. I did one time spend a while searching up this, and was able to find 60's car paint chart options, , even footage of 60's Cairo, but all a bit vague on 60's car manufacture in Egypt. I'm hoping that car buff will be able to go, "oh yes, Egypt was building(for example) FIAT car under licence, and look at a 60's Fiat paint chart" As an aside, the author of the Arab MiGs books, Tom Cooper, said that when later captured arab jets were examined by Israeli Aircraft Industries, (IAI) the paint used were matched by examples from the BS381c colours chart.... This also has the quote regarding the car paint posted above. cheers T
Black Knight
afair in the 1950s thru to the 1990s ex-BMC cars were built in Egypt. They were supplied in knock-down from the UK initially and only assembled there until about 1970, then the same cars were supplied from India in knock-down. They were the old A40 Cambridge type cars mostly https://www.google.com/search?q=austin+a40+cambridge&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwiA4Y_GnovoAhWFgM4BHRrEBj0Q2-cCegQIABAA&oq=austin+a40+cambridge&gs_l=img.3..0j0i24l2.10081.15207..16799...0.0..0.97.700.10......0....1..gws-wiz-img.......0i67j0i8i30.bRMaNulMcQw&ei=VRVlXsDiDoWBur4Pmoib6AM&bih=625&biw=1366&rlz=1C1CHBF_enGB883GB883 This car was built right up to recently in India as the Hindustan Ambassador https://www.google.com/search?q=hindustan+ambassador&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwiQ4ZTPnovoAhVFMRoKHdOhDpMQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=hindustan&gs_l=img.1.0.0l10.61672.68180..70620...1.0..0.86.729.10......0....1..gws-wiz-img.......35i39j0i67j0i131j0i10j0i10i24.ZGzDHJFUuI0&ei=aBVlXpCNDMXiaNPDupgJ&bih=625&biw=1366&rlz=1C1CHBF_enGB883GB883

Black Knight
11 minutes ago, Troy Smith said: But painted there? Very possibly. Based on that in the 1970s strike-riven UK BMC had an assembly plant on the out-skirts of Dublin. Cars were supplied in knock-down and assembled there and painted using BMC supplied paints. The cars were driven directly to UK dealers from there, that is, not back to the factory and thence to a dealer. 1
modelldoc
Egypt had also a small military production. The APC "Walid" is the best known example. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walid_(armored_personnel_carrier) for modelers more here: https://tanks-encyclopedia.com/coldwar/Egypt/Kader_Walid.php and a lot of pictures: https://www.google.com/search?q=walid+apc&sxsrf=ALeKk01-h1jxUZkbzNaQ4aCsi0CYqi523Q:1583700772284&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwisotmP4YvoAhVj2aYKHaMVAXkQ_AUoAXoECBEQAw&biw=1920&bih=937 modelldoc
Bonhoff
Wikipedia lists the "Nasr" car factory as being in Helwan - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasr_(car_company) As @Troy Smith correctly surmised, licence built FIATs.....
