1/12 Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R

Recommended Posts

I picked this kit up last year but upon opening the box was a bit disappointed. I found to be much simpler than I was expecting, more akin to a scaled up 1/24 kit.

Anyways, in looking to distract myself from the pair of B-25s lingering on my bench I decided to give it a whirl.

One of the first things I noticed when I opened the box is that the kit uses stickers instead any decals for the various markings as well as the IP.

Starting with the engine and front drivetrain, I noticed a fair bit of flash as well as odd marks in the mouldings.

There's this odd bend moulded into the driveshaft which if it was 1/1, wouldn't work very well.

I'm thinking I may swap it out.

That's it for the moment.

I’ve always wondered about the quality of this kit - I’ll be following with interest.

It's not as bad as I initially thought. It's primarily a press fit and screw together sort of assembly. But a lot of the screws are exposed and not covered up. There's quite a bit of flash on some parts. Thankfully the body shell is fairly blemish free apart from the typical seam lines.

I started painting the engine and transmission. I found it easier to paint the transmission first, mask it off and then paint the engine block.

Once that was painted and dry, I masked off the head and painted that a different shade of silver.

Apparently it wasn't different enough hut it was still easier to do it in steps.

I then added the turbos and the oilpan/ transfer case.

I then painted the chassis body colour. I'm sticking with a dark gun metal grey. The GT-R just had a certain menace in that colour.

I then painted and assembled the rad and intercooler.

Turning my attention to the interior, I cleaned up the mould seams on the seats. These were a bit heavy in places.

I then painted the seat inserts in grey. These are provided as stickers but I can't imagine them looking very good.

At this point I cleaned up all the seams on the body shell and sprayed a couple coats of paint. I'm using Tamiya's lacquer paint for this as it dries fairly quickly and sprays very nicely.

I've been sidetracked with some other kits on my bench but finally gave the Skyline a bit of love. I masked off the grey sections of the seats and door cards.

I then sprayed the parts semigloss black. I was out of semigloss black and so was my LHS. I found some online and ordered it from them. They had it to me in a couple days.

After the paint dried, I pulled up the masking tape.

Now to continue working on the interior.

It's been a long time since I updated this build. A bunch of stuff came up including a new work bench and kids staying home. Anyways, onto the progress.

I finished the engine.

It's really not much more detailed than a 1/24 kit so this went quickly.

I then installed the engine into the chassis.

The rear suspension was then built up. I took some artistic liberties and used various S

sheens of black rather than the all encompassing flat black called out by the instructions. I also decided to do the brake calipers in red.

I then finished the interior details.

Turning back to the chassis, the front and rear suspension units were installed. Everything is pretty much a press fit or screwed together.

The wheels are finished in a dark bronze and just need the tires mounted and then put into place.

I test fitted the body at this point.

This week we had some great weather so I took the body shell outside and spray painted it using Tamiya Gun Metal. I had tried airbrushing it but couldn't get a satisfactory finish. I didn't have a wide enough needle to deliver the amount of paint needed.

The spray can worked just fine. I heated up in a bowl of hot water. This worked like a charm.

I then masked off the body shell to paint the window trim.

With that done, final assembly only took about 30 minutes. The body was clipped and then screwed into place. Same goes for the doors. The hood has some hinges but again, just slips on

I then applied the few emblems to the car. These were provided in self adhesive metal. With those on, the build was finished. Sorry for the jump and not documenting more of the build. I just found it so simple I was a bit shocked. The big holdup was getting the body painted.

Back to planes for a bit and then I'll see what I want to work on next car wise.

Nice. I'm definitely going to do something in gun metal one day!

Gun metal just seems to be the right colour for a GT-R. That being said, I've got a Tamiya 1/24 kit I've already painted silver but it's getting the multi colour Axia decals once I get around to it.

Just seen this, I recently bought this kit and can say I am looking forward to the time when it graces music work bench, plenty of scope to add details too by the look of it. They’re releasing the Calsonic version in 1/12 too soon.
