1/48 Special Hobby Fairey Fulmar ****** FINISHED ******

Recommended Posts

For this Group Build I am  building one of the 806 Naval Air Squadron Fulmars flown by Lt William Barnes one of the top scoring Aces of the Royal Navy.  The difficulty with aircraft flown by 806 NAS in 1940 is that the serials were not documented by the pilots but what is known is that Barnes flew 6A / serial unknown.  So my model will be without a serial.

I have built the Special Hobby kit before, there are plastic, resin and etch replacement parts in the kit and there are a lot of them...

Obligatory sprue shots

Cockpit progress to date..

No seats in yet, and lots of work with a paint brush still to do...

Hopefully I might get to spend a bit more time working on the cockpits tomorrow and get them close to being finished....

Thanks for looking in..

Bit more progress on the Fulmar today.

Todays effort was to fit the cockpits and assemble the fuselage.  Due to the cockpit tubs being resin, a lot of fitting work was required.  Thank goodness for a rotary tool, a number of ex dental burrs and sanding disks.  Lots of thinning of the fuselage walls and resin to get it all in. The glueing the fuselage from the front to the back..  Then lots of liquid sprue filler..

Anyway - this is where I got to...

Thanks @RJ-WobblyHands & @Andwil, tbh it’s just a matter of figuring out where the parts go then glueing them in (good references to Fulmar cockpits are hard to find).

I do need to do a bit of work on the control surfaces.  I will scribe the lines around the ailerons & rudder deeper and cut off and reset the elevators and hinges.

Thanks for looking in..

Cracking job there Grey. I bought one of these from Bills model shop in Kent when they were first released. Pictures are few and far between so i did take lots of pictures of the cockpit  from the balcony at Yeovilton. I forgot about it but might be diverted now seeing how good this looks.

I am struggling with modelling motivation.  The Man Cave that I do modelling in, is also doubling up as my home office during this time of Social Distancing.  Spending everyday working in there does not make it conducive to spending the weekend in to do my hobby.  Still small sacrifice in the face of that which many others are facing.

Back to the Fulmar.

  • Landing, navigation and ID lights all now fitted, filled and sanded.  You need to make a backing frame for the large landing light, which of course I forgot to photograph.
  • Replaced the starboard gun port that I managed to drop inside the wing and couldn’t get out
  • Elevators were cut away, filled and reset in a drooped position.
  • All of the fuselage and wing filling has been sanded and polished.
  • Pilots canopy has been separated from the windscreen, masked and fitted, some filling to do there.
  • Rear canopy fixed sections have been fitted, I inserted strip behind them to stretch the canopies a little to fit the fuselage better.  All Canopies have been masked with Tamiya tape.  I think I’ll need to fabricate a new sliding portion of the rear canopy if I want that open.
  • Pilot and Observer seats completed, fitted and seatbelts fitted.

Nearly ready to throw some primer at it...

That’s a nice hurricane you have there, didn’t know the FAA had desert coloured aircraft! What are the letter codes? It looks like GL W?

nice work on that Fulmar it’s coming together beautifully.

The Hurricane is W9327/OL*W flown by Lt PN Charlton to destroy 3 Ju87s 20.11.43 who was then shot down by a ‘Friendly’ Kittyhawk.  The gap in the O is due to the handhold being open.

Slow progress but the Fulmar is primed.  Pre-shading complete and the sky grey laid down on the fuselage.  Mainplane undersurfaces are going to be IFF Black/White..  I did run out of my Sky Grey mix, I guess I’ll need to order more in (another Skua and three more Fulmars to do in this collection)...

Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be making blutack worms and doing lots of masking to get the camouflage on the top surfaces..

When normal service resumes, you can get Sky grey from Colour Coats.  Unless there's some problem in posting to the Irish Republic?

Ah, the Hurricane codes should be OL.

It’s ok I use a Tamiya mix for the Sky Grey, it’s easy to get, just need to order some.  I would need to buy Colour Coats from outside the UK as they don’t deliver to Ireland..

The Hurricane code is OL it’s  the open Handhold across the O.

Actually used the Cave as a Cave today rather than the office - and got to make some progress.  Quick trip to the paint shop today for the Fulmar.  Hi-demarcation S1E for this aircraft which is going to be an 806 NAS bird with Black/White IFF underside.

Some patching up to do but not to bad.

Patching and gloss coat tomorrow, might get some decalling done..

This build just seems to be going on forever.  A bit more progress on Lt W Barnes 806 NAS Fairey Fulmar.  Decals, and a bit of weathering.

I might actually get this finished by the end of the week if I’m lucky..

Couple of pics out in the ‘Mediterranean’ sun...

Looking great now. This is a superb build and was what inspired me to build mine.

Still plenty of time to get her finished.

I’m declaring this Fulmar as finished..

Fairey Fulmar MkI Serial Unknown /6A of 806 NAS HMS Illustrious.  This aircraft was flown by Lt William ‘Bill’ Barnes on 10.01.41. when he made the following claim ;Ju87 Destroyed, 2xJu87 Damaged, 100m W.Malta.

Couple of pictures..

Thank you for your support - now I’m going to add pictures in the Gallery and move straight on to my Seafire III in the Spitfire Seafire GB and my Seafire in the End of War GB...

Thank you @Andwil, @CliffB and @Scimitar F1 you are too kind.

Special Hobby did all the hard work I just nailed it together and threw a bit of paint at it.

The background is just two black and white images captured from the IWM, printed and taped to a board painted in a nondescript  grey match pot that was knocking around in the shed.  The Deck again is just a board painted grey with a white stripe.

Here are a couple of cockpit shots I missed yesterday.  Resin and PE included in the kit and a few odd bits wire to busy up the cockpit a bit.

49905689891_6636e04a86_b.jpg

The Observers cockpit is also fully detailed but I needed to build a new forward section of the canopy to get the mid section to slide under the front section.  I did it on my previous Fulmar and I’ll probably do it on my next.  Just didn’t do it on this one. It’s a pity there is no aftermarket Vacuum canopy as it would certainly be useful on this kit..  I also need to practice my canopy masking technique..

Fulmar 6A ranged in front of Fulmar MkI N1884/6K which was regularly flown by SLt Stan Orr (I built this Fulmar a couple of years ago) both aircraft flew with 806 during the same period, so this is not an impossible scene..

49905990267_f3e0bd3037_b.jpg

I have another Fulmar in the stash which will be completed as SLt Jackie Sewell’s 806 aircraft, detail differences from 6A.  Then I need to procure two more to do one as Lt Rupert Brabners 806 machine and one as Lt John Bruen’s 803 machine..  Work and funds cut out for me.  Before starting that I have two Seafires, a Corsair and a Skua to build....

Thanks for looking in..
