The Mighty "JUG". P-47 N Thunderbolt by Academy 1/48

Recommended Posts

The band line goes lower. The edge should cross the engine flap in 1/3 of the flap height. Look at any pic of P-47 N, or any RE P-47 and You'll know if it is worth Your time. Do not look at Evansville product (RA). They painted the band different. All N-s were from Farmingdale. With open canopy don't bother with the rear part of the band.

We are in the missions for Japan here. No N-s in ETO. The planes were operational and some weathering is welcomed. Yet big surfaces of falling off paint don't look real on these birds. Modesty is what You want. Even long and ruff used P-47 showed solid paint surface. Quality, You see :). But delicate chipping here and there, bit of fading, typical dirt stains and it should look proper.

Johnny, I'd guess that the answer lies there.

I don't know the operational details of these, but that's sounding like the Ns arrived at the end of the action.

What are we talking about with this one.... Europe?  Or escorts out of England? Or elsewhere?

Looks like it's the almost new look  that's required, judging by the greatgonzo Post.

" Higher band "I'd say means the paint line needs to be lower down the fuselage.

Metallics looking GOOD 😎‼️

Ahhh ok I see. Thanks. 🧐

It doesn't look too far off at the back end of the cowl, a fraction lower maybe, but I think the front needs to be lower, it appears not to be parallel all the way from cockpit to nose.

Looking good though!

Looks smart. Can’t wait for the blue!

The wife caved yesterday and got it, and introduced our almost 2 year old to Frozen. I now know the secret to quiet workbench time when it’s Daddy’s turn to hang out with the little rodent... 😂

I’m tottering. The only thing stopping me is the fact that my TV’s are too old to support streaming, that and the fact that my broadband may not be up to the job (only 50mps) I suppose I could eBay a cheap android box and there is a faster package ( I live in the sticks so I’m on fixed wireless) hmmm just have to see how bored we get and of course how long this thing lasts.

Morning Brit Modellers.

yesterday we had some bench time. Although we’re all at home work still ploughs ahead at a regular pace. 👾

Hopefully this weekend will see some moves closer to getting everything together.

Where were we? 🤩 True Blue! 😇 not yellow. 😔 and 😍 all at the same time.

first up, masking and pre shade.

Black and white and the bottom. 🥳

49707404911_188d989049_b.jpg

And the cowl. The cowl looks like a humbug.

49706869488_1bd7aa0793_b.jpg

🤣🤣 Humbug 😍😍

Then blue.

49706869498_ba01bf3e5a_b.jpg

Would have been a bruised banana had she have not been blue.

Pass two.

49706869493_03f5c45fd9_b.jpg

Looking goood to my eye.

third times a charm.

49706869508_346a331545_b.jpg

The cowl and masks off.

49706869623_8bd3d8d657_b.jpg

Lovely. 😇

and the tail in focus.

And all the bits.

This has now been glossed. I’ll hit the decals today and maybe Flory. 🤔🤔🤔 oh hell, wheels. And rockets. 🤩🤩🥳🥳😛😛 a good chunk left to do.
I only have one can of gloss left so I have ordered some. Can’t just pop to the LMS now can I. 😔 more later. Take care kids.

Johnny blue.

Johnny I'd avoid that… I think it's OK for sticking photos of the kids on mugs, but for our sort of 'quality work' I'd suggest investing in some 'proper' model paper.

Like this stuff here. Mr Decal paper - they do clear too and I'd suggest you get that as well for your 'non white background' transfers.

I know it's more expensive but just think 'less than buying a decal sheet' and you'll be fine :)

If you want some of the cheaper stuff to try PM me your address and I'll send you some; I have more than I need and won't be using it any day soon.

I’d agree with CED I have some of the cheapo white decal film and it’s extremely difficult to work with. Once printed needs a varnish or it will wrinkle up and be unusable and even at that results are very hit or miss.

Decals!! Academy ones are usually thick. These aren’t but they are fragile as hell.

probably their age. So a lot of soaking in warm water.

49708960956_b0ef731058_b.jpg

And to get them off the paper a gentle swipe, swipe with a very wet brush.

49708427198_004d080753_b.jpg

Then lift and gently put in place.

eventually most of them are on.

spot the schoolboy error.

49708962876_fa5c9a1335_b.jpg

Yup! 😬😬😱😱😱Even though I had micro solled the decal gods were looking favourably  on me 😇. I managed to get it off and pop it over here.

49708426983_e95c04b052_b.jpg

Phew. 🤩👍

got some glue on the bombs and tanks too.

49709283947_6a2d032204_b.jpg

Quick question.

I have the star and bar on the side here.

49708427163_146bec3811_b.jpg

Now looking at the structuons it looks like there is star and bar under  aaaand over the flap part. @greatgonzo I’m looking at you?? 😇

49709283222_c5067791a8_b.jpg

Any help would be greatly appreciated before I go full decal.

right dinner to cook then a face time with friends. See y’all later.

hope you like the build.

Great job on the decals Johnny 👍

When I built this kit mine went on ok initially then flaked off later. They were very crumbly. You have worked wonders with yours. Positioning of the fuselage stars n bars depends on whether the flap is open or shut. I seem to recall they are moulded open. The academy decal on mine came in two parts the smaller but went over the flap I  think.....

Looking good mate 😎
