The Mighty "JUG". P-47 N Thunderbolt by Academy 1/48

Recommended Posts

Johnny, quick question & apologize if I missed you discussing earlier—what are your finishing plans for the interior of the cowling around the engine cylinders?  I always find this area an adventure since it is so hard to get good period pictures—have a great deal of trust in you and your fan club so I figured I would throw the question out😎—again, awesome work—cheers Erwin

Well now there’s a thing. I usually go for something and it’s usually wrong so here’s the rub.
I’ve painted it the same as the wells. I’ve seen pics of both green/yellow and silver.

what are the odds I got it wrong? 🤪 someone will be along in a bit to tell me I’m sure. 🤩🤩🥳🤨

Hi guys.

What a totally insane week, hope you’re all safe and well.

I got a lot of work done from home today so I managed to get some work on the Jug.

The wells got a pre shade.

49680033308_f0a203d2de_b.jpg

And the tail area.

49680877842_94c8fe5df1_b.jpg

While this dried a primed the top in gloss black, ready for metallics.

49680033693_44bd6d717b_b.jpg

I used a zinc chromate yellow -XF-4 in the wells.

49680033943_dfe47503e7_b.jpg

And the tail.

49680567231_e6f4eea86f_b.jpg

Don’t worry it’s just the doors that will stay that colour. I’ll brush the internals. But what colour? 🤔 olive drab maybe? Or a brown?

The UC doors god some too.

49680033788_4ba1d199b2_b.jpg

As @VT Red Sox Fan questioned what colour I did the engine bay well I did it zinc.

49680054988_00c4574820_b.jpg

And the cowl.

49680856577_2610210819_b.jpg

I’m guessing @greatgonzo will be along in a sec to tell me I got it wrong. 🤪 I do like that yellow though. 🥰 I’ll miss it. 🤣

many way this Vallejo primer needs to dry over night.

ready for action.

49680857502_eedaab74df_b.jpg

Aaaaand psssssssssttttttttttttttttt.

49680858477_5eb4ae6b67_b.jpg

I’ll micro mesh that down before metallics.

id planned on a bit of light chipping on the colour bands. Is this acceptable peeps?

More tomorrow.

Take care y’all.

Johnny. 😷🦠

Hello Dear Spad !!

Your jug look ace !!

Can't wait to see her painted.

Sorry, but I rarely use Tamiya paints, I'll have a look in my cross referencies, so I can't tell for sure.

Cowling is Zinc chromate yellow, interior is bronze green And I think that I let my wheels wells interior green...

A bit patchy But it was very oftenly the case as I read it in the D&S...

So, I'll wait for a guru's answer...

I hope that everything is going well at castle Spadgent  !!

Sincerely.

CC

You don't need a guru for the cowling. There is no mystery here at all. It was anodised aluminium. Hate to spoil the fun, but it really was. Along with deflector box for air intake and oil coolers intake.

Edit:

Wheel wells are ZCY all right. That goes for all P-47s. Cockpit is not so easy but Bronze Green is the one colour that goes not into competition. The safe bet should be Dull Dark Green for the N. Very similar to BG on the other hand.

Before dog walk post. Do t work I’ll keep at least two meters away fro other hoomans.

But look at the shiny.

49682726971_d01a087d3a_b.jpg

I believe the fuselage is shinyerer than the wings. So I’m doing that. (Im not changing it if it’s wrong). 🤪

many way she looks smashing.  The cowl too.

49682194828_9f9e105a8f_b.jpg

Like a seventies Cylon.
the intake list it’s ZCY and got a duller shiny.

49682194798_954b5773b5_b.jpg

This will all get knocked back with Tamiya Smoke on my post shade pass.

49682726986_5c2013a0fa_b.jpg

a few other bits got some attention before chores commenced.

So anyway the Jug!!!!

The wings got a duller coat before we set off.

49683018197_5a8ea4ec21_b.jpg

And the canopy cot a super shiny.

49682194803_54073c4ee8_b.jpg 49683018162_7e5cc2d282_b.jpg

That needs to dry before I Add my smoke post shade.

Always a little panic when that happens.

We had a pub get together last night with close friends.

not “in” the pub but over a video chat thing called “Zoom”.  It was great! But am very hung over now. 🤪

I did get some Jug done before the wine.

first a dog walk away from others.

49685463683_642d42fa9d_b.jpg

Even the the local boot on a post. “The ounty John boot” had a face mask. 😷

49685463638_c423a9dec8_b.jpg

Any way it’s an aeroplane your here for right. 🤩

The pre shade got started with Tamiya smoke.

49685996041_d5991ed4c9_b.jpg

You can see the left wing has no shade.

Not to everyone’s taste but I like it this way. ❤️

49686296157_49633042ef_b.jpg

Typically I snapped off the tail while spraying.

49686449502_f4b8b5e54f_b.jpg

All done.

49685995771_e7e5b7a34e_b.jpg

And glued back on. 😇

49685461713_af93af0627_b.jpg

Happy with that.
I’d had some rum before using Vallejo metal varnish.  It was going on really badly. I have a cheap Airbrush for spraying Gloss coats etc. This stuff clogged like nothing else.

do people use this? Is there a knack?

I ended up brushing it eventually.

I checked this morning and she looks fine, luckily. Must remember not to drink while modelling. 🤪

more colours later. ❤️

need to phone ma mum.

Have a great day folks.

Johnny. 🥳

Hey guys. More work on the paint.

masking for the olive stripe.

49691583658_1698252422_b.jpg

Cling film is my new go to masking solution. 👍

The cowl was masked too.

49692127656_068fe80666_b.jpg

I brushed on some chipping fluid and dried it off with the airbrush before a darker pre shade was sprayed Ready for the olive drab.

49692432072_0a5274ec3d_b.jpg

and the cowl.

49691581238_04db3c5599_b.jpg

Sprayed and unmasked.

49692460227_7cca0261aa_b.jpg

Nice! Apart from the cowl that got stripped when the tape came off. 😧

49691581303_871e6fdedd_b.jpg

I contemplated keeping this as weathering but couldn’t live with it so I tried to brush some smoke over the top. 😱

49692122661_234c99f0ab_b.jpg

Big old mistake. 😩... nothing for it but to re spray and fix her up.  First pass down.

49691633108_d012bf0d88_b.jpg

Phew! Looks good.🤩 then on with the smoke.

49692122101_a127dcc6b6_b.jpg

Good as new. 🤗

Right now we’re back on track I can chip the strip.

49691587898_4465486083_b.jpg

Subtle but that’s what I’m after.

49692124516_afd20fe5e1_b.jpg

Just before the end of play I carefully tried out a decal. Half expecting it to explode it was a careful procedure with a brush to get water under it but eventually this happened.

49692431687_5f45007fe1_b.jpg

Brilliant! 🤩 added some micro sol. And left to dry. More decals and True blue to come. Thanks for looking in. It’s so odd at the moment this is really keeping me a little bit grounded. Take care of yourselves.

Johnny. 😇

I know people usually don't care about such things, but I do. So, well..., what the hell, I'll say it. The OD belt forward of the windscreen goes to high. it's not much and wouldn't be noticeable at all if not for the engine flap. The OD line goes more or less in the middle of it, and should go lower. It stands out for me, probably because it is so common mistake. You have masked the rear part of the belt intuitively logic, but it was not like that. Still, if the canopy will go in the open position, there is nothing to talk about there. The frame will cover it anyway. It is quite impossible to see chipped edges of OD belt on any P-47 and even more so on relatively new and short serving N-s. Panels, maybe, fading, why not. But edges? No sir.

So You have a reasonable crowd of admirers and one grumpy, not so happy gonzo. No big deal I dare say ;).

Well it looks like I’ve done it again. 😱

I did ask a few post ago about chipping on the colour and since there was no reply I figured it would be ok. 🤭 easily fixed I guess. Not sure what you mean about the band going too high? I am having the canopy open.

would the blue be chipped or is that a no go too?

Thanks once again for your help.

Johnny, I'd guess that the answer lies there.

I don't know the operational details of these, but that's sounding like the Ns arrived at the end of the action.

What are we talking about with this one.... Europe?  Or escorts out of England? Or elsewhere?

Looks like it's the almost new look  that's required, judging by the greatgonzo Post.

" Higher band "I'd say means the paint line needs to be lower down the fuselage.

Metallics looking GOOD 😎‼️

It doesn't look too far off at the back end of the cowl, a fraction lower maybe, but I think the front needs to be lower, it appears not to be parallel all the way from cockpit to nose.

Looking good though!
