Back to normality...... 1/48 Firefly and a Spitfire for good measure

Recommended Posts

Evening all

Ok since  I finished the Dirty ive been struggling to find a meaningful next project, so a delve into the stash produced the Tamiya Mosquito with a host of aftermarket goodies, but for some reason I just couldn't get into it,i huffed and puffed for a week or two before giving up and packing everything back in the box...….. back to perusing the stash and my eyes lingered on this

well ive never attempted a FFA aircraft or a Special Hobby kit before so I dived in...… progress so far, the fit isn't half bad but the instructions can bat a tad.....vague

lovely resin undercarriage bay

im definitely not going for 100% accuracy more a nice relaxing stress free build...…...so to complicate matters a little I picked up a Spitfire on King Kits for £8 and dived into that too

Good work so far.  There are a number of us on here who have built the Firefly.  It’s a good kit but watch out for the fit of the rear canopy, it’s a tad narrow..

Cheers mate ....I'll certainly keep an eye on that canopy everything is fitting quite well so so far,a few seams and gaps need some attention but nothing too serious 👍🏻

Erm if that engine is from the ICM MkXVI kit it's an undernourished Packard Merlin. I have one of these in the stash but I have built the MkV Firefly but that's another story.

TRF

Thanks for correcting me on that mate... whatever it is it could do with a good meal😳im gonna have to make a decision as to whether I should use it or not...I'm leaning towards not!🤔

I have that spitfire in my stash.so interested to see how it goes, torn between a silver and red post war scheme and a Belgian airforce one. Unless of course I can find something more esoteric.

It goes together fine but to be honest I left out as much of the engine as I could just in case they affected the fit of the cowling panels..

I think I'm just going to stick with the box art markings it's been a while since I built a Spit so i will stick with what I know👍

So nothing serious to be wary of then?

no just build it carefully and beware of sink marks.

ICM late Merlin spit kits were probably the most accurate on the market before Eduard did their excellent versions. ICM's main problem was quality control of the mouldings and average decals. Having the engine and all the gubbins may have been a bit ambitious as well. Plus side is lots of spares. ie rudders, elevators, wing tips etc.

It's a lovely kit for a nice relaxing easy going sort of build ...I always think the Eduard boxings deserve going that extra mile to show what truly great kits they are,so it's nice not to worry so much and the price definitely helps👍

Evening all

More progress on my simple easy going stress free builds

Spitfire.....engine bulkhead fitted and fuselage buttoned up, im going to leave the engine mounts frame in but im not fitting the engine itself a dry fit shows I wouldnt get the top engine panel on if I did

49575687008_5fd4e870cd_b.jpgIMG_20200223_153614127 by Tim Dyson, on Flickr

49576208796_fe8434064b_b.jpgIMG_20200223_192457884 by Tim Dyson, on Flickr

my own fault I hadn't pushed the cockpit far enough up into the fuselage so some trimming is required
