Supersonic Hotrods of the Wisconsin Air National Guard

Recommended Posts

Way back in the early-1970s I was at the University of Wisconsin in Madison doing my undergraduate studies. At that time, the Wisconsin Air National Guard (ANG) was flying F-102 Delta Daggers, and the sight of these jets flying overhead was joy to behold.

Fast forward nearly 50-years later. I'm nearing retirement and seriously considering returning to Madison for my golden years. The Wisconsin ANG now flies the F-16C Block 30 (their F-102s were replaced with Cessna Skymasters in 1974, followed by A-10s) and I thought it appropriate to do a double build of their supersonic hotrods. Here are the kits:

Significant aftermarket used in these build include:

Meng F-102

  • Wolfpack engine nozzle set
  • Pavla ejection seat
  • Eduard photoetch
  • Quickboost anti-collision lights
  • Master Model pitot tube
  • Brassin and Maestro Models missiles

Markings are from the Draw Decal F-102 set

Paints used are True North Air's Defense Command Gray, and Mr Color Nimbus Red for the red wingtips and tail fin

Hasegawa F-16C

  • Aires cockpit and wheel bay
  • Quickboost ejection seat
  • Eduard photoetch
  • CMK engine nozzle (not a great improvement)
  • Weapons and pylons from Hasegawa Weapons set #5
  • Dream Model pitot tube

Markings are from the kit

Paints used are True North's Light & Dark Ghost Gray, Gunship Gray, and Neutral Gray. For the red tail fin I used Mr Color, as with the F-102.

My WIP can be viewed here:

I have lots of pics to show, so hold on to your hats!

Excellent brace of hot-rods.  The 102 also takes me back to the 1970's when I saw some of them landing at Lossiemouth in Scotland.  They made an impression on me because they were so different to the RAF/RN kit usually seen locally.  Loved them then and I'm still impressed by them.  Nice to see these beautiful kits.

... a great comparison of fighter design

Agreed! A quarter century between the two. And, it’s been 22-years since that particular F-16. In a few years, the Wisconsin ANG will be flying F-35s... Hopefully then I’ll be able to add a third member to make it a half-century comparison.

I will start to build two Arctic Vipers when current Habu projects are completed.

Love those Arctic schemes. Just this morning I was looking at those and what I would need to do them.

I have already built two Arctic Vipers based on Mastercraft (or Mistercraft whatever is a horrible copy of Italeri kit) to test my vinyl masks and self printed decals. I have given both as gift and I want to build them again using Revell kits (I have around 60 brand-new Revell kits in my inventory)...

I just got the Revell F-16 kit. If you have any extra masks & decals, I’d be willing to take them off your hands.
