1/24 Gemini 9A - Revell

Recommended Posts

Starting to apply the 'Velcro' decals to the Adapter ... as well as for the access panels. These are from Rick Sternbach.

2v2Eeb4NLxAnAAS.jpg

After some trial and error trying to figure out how to affix the 'foil' to the plastic, I started applying the 'foil' ...

Dry fit of the crew cabin

2v2EeyMqWxAnAAS.jpg

2v2EeyMFGxAnAAS.jpg

Something was preventing the panels from fitting better ... It was the Astronaut's feet, so-o-o

2v2EeyMySxAnAAS.jpg

... I had to amputate ...

2v2EeyMdnxAnAAS.jpg

... and do a little filing on the AM parts ...

2v2EeyM5VxAnAAS.jpg

... and file a bit more ...

2v2EeyMrCxAnAAS.jpg

But I realized that I had forgotten to install the centre console ... shucks, this was not gonna be fun ...

2v2EebGA5xAnAAS.jpg

2v2EebmHFxAnAAS.jpg

But after a couple of hours, it got in there and some painting got done

2v2EeyMMWxAnAAS.jpg

2v2Eeyz3VxAnAAS.jpg

The 3 piece hull, had a lot of gaps, even without all the aftermarket paraphernalia stuck in there. So with some styrene scraps, the gaps got filled.

2v2EeyM8gxAnAAS.jpg

Still a lot to get done ...

Poor Tom Stafford.

Still I suppose he doesn't really need feet while he's stuck in that tin can.

Your ship is begining to look impressively complex and colorful there.

Not too surprising to have the final fit problems when it comes time to close up something that jammed full of extra goodies.

It was pretty tight in the real thing and you have to deal with components that are five or ten times thicker than what the actual parts would be in scale.

What did you use for the mylar blanket on the adapter?

Many Thanx Tzulscha er, I mean 'Q' ... ;)

I picked this film up at Michael's Craft Store ... it's like Mylar and is for wrapping gifts.

To adhere it to the model I tried Model Cement, that didn't work. White Glue, that didn't work either ... then I tried Rubber Cement that I've had since my old Graphic Designer days and it worked nicely.

Don't you mean "sitting in that tin can"?

While Cernan is floating round it...

Something that works to if you have it is Fixative, sprays a nice even coat

I botched the RCS section.

In trying to enlarge the Thruster holes, so I could insert Aluminium tubes, the Dremel ( which is not my friend ... ) wandered a bit ...

2v2EeyMGLxAnAAS.jpg

So I found a short length of PVC and cut off a piece ...

2v2EeyzugxAnAAS.jpg

... transferred the centrelines ...

2v2EeyziyxAnAAS.jpg

... drilled pilot holes with the pin vice ...

2v2EeyMngxAnAAS.jpg

... transferred the shingle lines ...

2v2Eeyz9LxAnAAS.jpg

... enlarged those holes ...

2v2EQVq85xAnAAS.jpg

... trial fitting the Aluminium tubes ... but ...

2v2EQLtodxAnAAS.jpg

... and WTF?? ... I did it again! I thought that maybe fitting the tubes in there might conceal the error but ... nope ...

2v2EQLSGWxAnAAS.jpg

... using styrene scraps, scratch built a new RCS section ...

2v2EQLtBrxAnAAS.jpg

2v2EQLte5xAnAAS.jpg

Filled the seam with styrene ...

2v2EbTKMnxAnAAS.jpg

I'll thin down the shingle strips.

2v2EbT1UNxAnAAS.jpg

And let's see how it looks ...

2v2EbTKzqxAnAAS.jpg

Getting down to the short strokes.

A quick suggestion -

If you need curved plasticard shapes, cut out a trip longer than needed and wrap around a suitable former with a slightly smaller diameter than that needed and hold in place with masking tape, then carefully pour boiling water over the plasticard and dip into cold water. The former needs to be longer than needed as a handle and made of a material which won't melt in bioling water.

Also don't use plasticard thicker than 20thou(0.5mm). 2 Layers of 20thou plasticard produce a much stronger part than 1 layer of 40thou.

The EVA Astronaut is just about done. The Umbilical line is a coat hanger wrapped in First Aid tape ...

2v2EKSdegxAnAAS.jpg

2v2EKSdCWxAnAAS.jpg

The major seams were filled with styrene strips ... and the minor gaps were filled with putty ...

2v2EZHg5GxAnAAS.jpg

2v2EZHgyWxAnAAS.jpg

In the process of sanding those seams, some of the kit's washers were sanded down, so I stamped out a few and glued 'em down ...

2v2EQVqNFxAnAAS.jpg

The two umbilical connections were carved out of a block of styrene ...

2v2EQVqjyxAnAAS.jpg

A dry fit, one of many ...

2v2EQVF2nxAnAAS.jpg

First coat of Primer

2v2EbT12dxAnAAS.jpg

And getting closer to complete

Thanx Pete in Lincs!

Starting to add the 'Mylar' to the aft end ...

2v2EKe4TqxAnAAS.jpg

2v2EKe4BgxAnAAS.jpg

2v2EKeVU5xAnAAS.jpg

... and done.

2v2EKeVJjxAnAAS.jpg

Starting to decal the crew cabin ... the decals are from Rick Sternbach's 'Space Model Systems' ... and they're lovely!

2v2EKe4LNxAnAAS.jpg

The BIG US decals need some TLC to settle into those corrugations ... lots of setting solution and some, um, persuasion.

2v2EKe4iNxAnAAS.jpg

... and they settled very nicely.

2v2EKe47qxAnAAS.jpg

2v2EKe4wdxAnAAS.jpg

The spacecraft is done ...

2v2EK7nodxAnAAS.jpg

... but I still need to include the EVA Astronaut ...

2v2EK7nunxAnAAS.jpg

Till next post

This post will wrap up this build ...

Still without the EVA Cernan ...

2v2EK7GbgxAnAAS.jpg

With him but ... without his umbilical line ...

2v2EK7G6gxAnAAS.jpg

With the accompanying, scratch built, ATDA which was also on this mission ... you may know it better as 'The Angry Alligator'

2v2EK7GrrxAnAAS.jpg

2v2EK7GFFxAnAAS.jpg

And the final assembly ...

2v2EKSdRyxAnAAS.jpg

Ignore the little doo-dad hanging off the umbilical line ... it's an anti-foul fitting that detached from the adapter and I didn't notice it when I took these pix ...

2v2EKSdvWxAnAAS.jpg

2v2EKSFFhxAnAAS.jpg

2v2EKSFdCxAnAAS.jpg

2v2EKSFyLxAnAAS.jpg

2v2EKSF5gxAnAAS.jpg

It has its flaws, under close scrutiny, it shan't win any awards at a contest, but ... it'll still get entered!

Thanx for your attention to this thread gents ... onto the next build!

That’s a fantastic build of this old kit, lovely detail added in all areas. Looks like it fought you in a few places but you nailed it.
I am inspired to build mine but so far haven’t been able to get the LVM detail set so far as they are no longer producing it. Hopefully pick one up one day!

That is a fantastic model.

I really love the job on the heatshield, have seen so many models that are not convincing, but yours looks very realistic. Its a real shame that the LVM detail kit is not available these days.
