Grumping into the 20s

Recommended Posts

OK, well you asked for it and don't say I didn't warn you!

My grump du jour is the lack of stimulating and intelligent new content on the TV. My time for getting to watch TV is generally after 11pm at night to the wee small hours after I have seen my wife, who's an early bedder due to her health, off to bed. Generally, up 'til now, I have been able to find something on TV about cosmology, archaeology or even industrial processes (How it's made) that I can put on and listen in to/watch while I do other things like lift some weights, read Britmodeller or even do a spot of modelling. Now, however, the TV scheduling has changed and I am finding Ancient Aliens, Mountain Monsters, Pawn Stars and the like are what I am reduced to watching. I am now losing my marbles!!!!! I am particularly finding Ancient Aliens and Mountain Monsters incredibly ridiculous.

Ancient Aliens- Sure there are some fascinating aspects of the ancient world which are very hard to explain and, I guess, could be, just possibly, the work of some advanced race who have visited but to suggest, among other things, that the Plethora of Super Hero nonsense that is being eaten up by the general public are evidence of humanity longing for the Superhero extra terrestrials/Gods of the past rather than an escape for those who feel themselves socially inadequate and long to be, or be saved by, a Superhero or want the injustices of the world put right by some superman (although most of them, The Arrow, Supergirl and The Flash in particular seem rather inept and create more death and destruction than they solve) Is just plain ridiculous and that is just the tip of the iceberg. The Ancient Aliens 'experts' ruin their whole argument by throwing utterly ridiculous, delusional stuff like this in that doesn't even follow any form of logic.

Mountain Monsters- My God, where to begin, it is so fake and utterly preposterous! A bunch of hillbillies chasing around the backwoods almost, but never quite, catching all manner and variety of 'Bigfoot' creatures. It scares me that there might be people out there who believe this stuff is real.

It's only that the wife would kill me that has stopped me launching the telly through the window at times!

When the VCR appeared on the scene about half a lifetime ago we basically stopped watching 'live' Tv and selected progs to record and watch at our leisure with fast forward taking care of the ads. I am slowly dragging myself into the 21st Century and using more On Demand services, but recently TVNZ decided to no longer support our so-called Smart TV so we have just bought a newer Smart TV which has generated a whole host of new problems. Seems the Tech firms are so busy doing dodgy deals with preferred suppliers that finding compatible services is almost impossible. The Freeview On Demand service is a BPOS, I cant load the TVNZ app onto my new TV, Choice TV has an on demand service that does not work on TV's, - go figure!

The really good news is that the built in browser allows me to access MotoGP so my season is set! No more squinting at the 21" iMac, it will all be there in 50" HDD glory in the comfort of the front room.

In the meantime we are finding some amusement on You Tube, but with the stupidity that is a hallmark of modern business, You Tube will not allow me to use my Bluetooth keyboard to navigate, so I have a Smart Tv that is almost as thick as the one it has replaced and I have to sit there clicking a remote, - not any remote, but a "Magic Remote". The only Magic thing about it is that you need to be a Wizard to operate it.

You should try a Samsung TV. The LG with is magic remote was a blessed relief....  even my better half can work it.

I have always thought that the birth of the GUI (graphical user interface) was derived from the very first electronic user interface - the first video recorder. If anyone knows who originated this software - let me know because I want to wring his neck. This software generated millions of equally badly programmed copies that persisted for at least 30 years. We are slowly realising that communication with digital equipment should be easy, but unfortunately the TV manufacturers  are still bound to the lowest common denominator and think that as long as they understand it, we will too.

In the 1980s, working with the usual bleeding edge stuff, I asked a semi-cooperative programmer why software was so difficult to use. His reply "Well the kernel (i.e. the most difficult bit) is fun to code. As long as the rest works I don't care". 40 years later we are still suffering....

Haven't watched Finding Bigfoot but I can well imagine how intellectually challenging it must be. Then of course there is the insanity that is 'The Curse of Oak Island'. Many seasons and millions of dollars of utter pointless drivel.

Another one that gets up my nose is 'Hunting for Hitler'. Caught one or two episodes of that and it's ridiculous. Anyone with half a brain let alone a good profiler or psychologist could tell you that Adolf Hitler was not the type to try and escape. When the Reich fell he wouldn't have countenanced escaping and risking being hunted down like a dog to be paraded and held up to face his utter failure. Suicide is the only route a man like him would have taken. In his mind suicide would be the only way to deny his opponents the trophy that he believed they would desire the most. Case closed.

I keep looking around the whole of the TV and rarely find anything to challenge the intellect. I am becoming seriously Intellectually starved by the fact that it seems the vast majority of programming is designed for the intellectually challenged and/or fantasists.

There are such people, fortunately most of them live in the USA  :mental:  (No offence to any US forumistas, I know you're better than that!)

My pet hate is 'Ghost Adventures' with Zak Bagans and his intrepid team, a programme to which SWMBO is addicted  An honest description of this programme would get me banned from the forum for bad language.  If you are lucky enough never to have seen it, just imagine a programme where the 'ghost hunters' lock themselves inside an old prison/hospital/orphanage/house of ill repute and attempt to communicate with the resident spirits, squealing like schoolgirls at every creak or bump.  It really beggars belief that this programme continues to be commissioned.

....and why do ghosts only come out at night and why are they always evil or bad? Do ghosts get paid double time and a half for third shift or something? Just once they need to have a friendly ghost that you know, does the dishes or puts the roast on for you before you get home.

I must admit that I always find it odd that not only ghosts, but also Bigfoots (or should that be Bigfeet?) etc. are only active in the dark. I have heard many tales of ghosts and malevolent entities during daylight hours I have even had a ghostly experience or two myself in bright daylight and one of those was actually a very positive experience. When it comes to supposedly nocturnal monsters surely the best time to hunt for them would be when they were having a snooze during the day? You could sneak into the 'nests' (these seem to be everywhere in the Appalachians) and catch them napping.

That reminds me of the old vampire films, when the hero and his party always time their arrival at Castle Dracula just as it's getting dark and the Count is becoming active.  Why don't they set off earlier and arrive in daylight, just hammer the stake into the Count and no need to be waving crucifixes around?  Should be on page one of the vampire hunter's guide - get there in daylight!

I'm finding I'm viewing YouTube more than ever now, from listening to rain drops to relax, being on board live with a truck driver in the US, walking around Tokyo, catching up with a few older tunes, seeing a Airfix Victor being put together in stop-start motion or just browsing the recommendations, there are some damn good channels on there, I may have got a 4k telly because it was 4k but the best bit was it is a internet connected telly.

Yes, me too. Used to just use YouTube on my Mac for motorcycle/motorsport and aviation vids. Now the wife and I sit in front of the TV digging up classical music, old UK comedy shows, old Pathe reels of the UK as we remember it, and all sorts of random 'entertainment' from the sublime to the truly ridiculous!

Can't say I have heard it though, from looking at my 'newsfeed' whenever I log on to t'net, I gather it is by a strange green haired creature called Billy Eyelash or something who is perpetually in what is laughingly called 'News'.

Haven't seen a Bond movie since the one with Brosnan. I seriously lost interest at that one and never went back.

Ok,  now I am grumpy. Wake up to steady rain today, look at the DVCA website, nope, games are not cancelled so we have to at least report to the ground. Drive out to Eltham College, get rained on the entire way and for some reason when it rains, people seem to put their brain in neutral when driving, anyways. Get to ground, ground is wet but playable, pitch is all weather stuff so that's fine. Lose the toss, get sent in. Now here's the thing, the opposition chose to bowl and 3 overs in they are crowing about how bad the conditions are and the ball is getting stuffed. YOU CHOSE TO BOWL!! Meanwhile the drizzly rain hasn't stopped, I'm now soaking wet, my gear is soaking wet and it's 19 overs in, we are 1/40something. My batting partner loses grip of his bat and it goes flying, their skipper calls our skipper out onto the ground and wants to abandon the day as unsafe. I tell their skipper he's talking out his back passage, pitch is fine, he just wants to abandon play because the ball is stuffed and we are getting ontop. Eventually our captain gives in and agrees to abandon play....UGH, so 19 overs gone, 1 over short of making it a match, we abandon play. If we were 6/40 he wouldn't have wanted to go off, totally wasted the day and we played into their hands as they had 2 of their best bats out, you can bet they will be in next week as the game is now a 1 day match.

Soft all round, but seriously, winning the toss and bowling in the rain then complaining.........

As much as I like the French, there are times when I could cheerfully strangle some of them, especially the old ones. Coming back from a trip to the super market this morning, I drove through the local town and saw two of the aforementioned crossing the road  about 100 yards in front of me. Two of their friends were standing on the edge of the pavement so they decided to start up  conversation with them. But instead of joining them on the pavement, they elected to remain in the road. With oncoming traffic, I had to stop and wait until it was clear so that I could go around them, but as I did so, they gave me the evil eye as though I had no business being on the road. Unbelievable!
