Sabre Mk4 1/48

Recommended Posts

Hi James,

the camo looks good, the preshading comes through nicely. So it sounds you like the Hataka paints? They have some sets which are quite interesting to me, so anything to be aware of using them? Which thinner did you use?

I'm planning to do a Sabre 4 too (Yugoslavian) and it's great to have a reference here about all the small little details to be aware of for this variant.

Cheers

Markus

Yes the Hataka paints are pretty nice. This is the third kit that I’ve used them on now and haven’t had any trouble yet. I’ve been thinning by about 60% with their own lacquer thinners. Good luck with your Yugoslav Sabre.

Hi everyone

Got some decals on last night. Not all of them but the main ones apart from the K on the fin. The roundels came from a Flightdecs sheet I had for the Sabre as I wasn't that happy with the blue on the Eaglestrike sheet. It seemed a bit dark.

Here she is.

Hi everyone

Decaling is finally complete with all of the stencils now on and its beginning look more Sabre like again and nice and colourful.

I caused myself a bit of grief trying to use Mr Mark setting solution to really get some of the decals to bed into panel lines a bit better and get rid of a bit of silvering. You can see below just in front of the serial number where it ate some of the green paint and also caused some of the red on a couple of the wing roundels to run and need replacing. Lesson learned!

Its since had a gloss coat and that green patch sorted out and is now ready for a dark dirt wash.

And in other news I’ve also started another Sabre. A 92 squadron machine with red and yellow and red checks around the nose and on the boards either side of the roundels from the same decal sheet as this aircraft. It has slatted wings so I’m going to sacrifice a Revell Sabredog to achieve this. Will post some progress of this here soon.

Thanks for looking.

Looking good James, looking good.

Don't go too mad with the dirt, these aircraft were in service when the RAF had bucket loads of manpower to keep the aircraft relatively clean, there will be some dirt, even an aircraft that's been nowhere and done nothing somehow contrives to be dirty - I speak from bitter experience!

Yep, the plan is a dark dirt panel line wash, satin varnish and maybe a bit of light staining around the fuel filler caps, job done. I have a couple of photos of this aircraft and it’s pretty shiny being the wingco’s aircraft.

Thanks

Hello chaps

It’s been ages so here we go.

Sabre no. 1 is now finished. After decals it had a gloss clear coat, Flory Models dark dirt wash and some oils here and there followed by a satin coat. U/c was then painted up and given a wash. I also added a pilot figure as I saw a picture of 3 squadron pilots with green flying helmets. I’m terrible at figure painting but anyway it’s done now and here it is. I’m actually fairly pleased with it.

More pics in the RFI section soon.

Sabre 2.

I got the cockpit painted and fuselage together pretty quickly.

The donor kit also arrived and was immediately hacked up for its wing slats.

The leading edge of the D is longer than the F wing so it will need cutting to size.

This is the scheme for the second kit.

That’s all for now. I need to take a short break from Sabres for now as I want to build my entry for the Journeys End GB but keep an eye out for more updates later in the summer.

Thanks

James

James,

Very well done on the 3 Sqn jet and I'm looking forward to seeing how the 92 Sqn jet works out as I have often thought about doing the very conversion you're about to attempt.  Good luck with it.

I did actually do a bit of surgery last couple of  nights.

This was the top part of the wing which was cut along the front edge of the wing spar panel line. That went fine, no dramas.

I then stupidly sat down at about 10pm last night after a couple of glasses of red and decided to do the lower wing section in the same manner. Big mistake! I cut Hasegawa leading edge of to far back and had a huge gap which I had to fill with a big shim of plastic card and sprue gloop.

Anyway it’s not as bad as it may look. I’ve sanded it back just now and it just needs a bit of a re scribe and hopefully it will be fine. Note to self, late night modelling and alcohol don’t mix!

 Thanks

James

Good recovery but you've hit the nail on the head there with the quoted line, having made that mistake myself I would never model that late (tired), or after alcohol (emotional).  You're lucky it was just the kit that sustained a cut in the wrong place and not something soft and fleshy (guess how I know)?
