SAAB JA-37 Viggen

Jabba

Recommended Posts

This will be my entry for this GB. It is the Special Hobby SAAB JA-37 Viggen, and will be mainly out of the box. I may just get some other decals, but they will be for a grey aircraft as I do not think that I will be able to cope with the splinter scheme this time around. I will save that for another model, when I have more time.

The box.

welcome along Jabba, and with a Viggen to add to the growing ranks of them.

The Special Hobby model is turning out to be a popular choice. Mmmm the splinter scheme isn't something you really want to do in 1/72nd as it's very time consuming even though the results can be awesome.

So good luck with the build, good to have you along and look forward to seeing her in the gallery.

Some parts have now been built up, the cockpit, nose U/C bay and the intakes. I have also been painting some other parts so that they can be built up such as the exhaust. I have read through a few reviews of this kit and they mention about the fitting of the intakes and how they have to be in a specific place, so with that in mind I will probably not glue them when I glue the Fwd fuselage halves together just let them float if that is possible until the actual intakes are trial fitted. Some pictures.

I now have the three major parts of this model together ready to be glued as one. Before I put the Fwd fuselage parts together I tested that the intake trunking was in the correct place. As I fitted the spacer piece at the rear the trunking moved forward, so much so that the intake would not fit. So I did it visa versa with the space then not fitting. So I removed the trunking and tried to fit to the spacer o no avail, until I found out that I had the trunking upside down. So with the trunking in the forward fuselage correctly I did the trial again with success, so I then glued the Fwd fuselage together.

Good progress and thank you for documenting some issues to watch out for with this one. Although that isn't doing my resolve to avoid adding this kit to my stash any favours

Nice start Jabba. So many Viggens and Drakens on here I’m kinda surprised that they are so popular on a typically British modelling forum. Having saying that, I too have recently been lured in to the mystique of hese beautiful Nordic subjects so I see where the popularity and enthusiasm comes from. Looking forward to the new pics.

Cheers and all the best.. Dave

Thanks, I used to enjoy seeing Viggens fly at many an airshow, especially the landing where on a few occasions the pilot would use the reverse thrust so that the aircraft would travel in a circle backwards on the runway.

I am now able to upload the latest photos fuselage and wings joined together and filled. I am not going to add the intakes until I have sanded down that area. I have also got the nose together and have added the part at the front of the fuselage to aid fitment. Although the instruction say that no weight is required if no weapons are added, I have put some weight in the nose because I may do, even though there are none in the kit.

filler in the usual spots I see, but she's coming along nicely.

Due to the mains being that duel wheel config you can actually get away with no weight in the nose! I didn't add any to my 1/48th build. Check first, worse case you'll just need a wee bit.

A few years ago when doing the MiG-21 GB many of us making the Eduard kit found that we all had filler in the same places.

Sorry to say that I have not been doing much on this one over the last week or so, been trying to get another kit ready for club night tomorrow. Anyhow I have been sanding down the filler and also adding a few parts including the nose, tail and intakes. I have added the vents and such like to the fuselage, but these do seem to protrude a little bit above the fuselage. I think that I should have taken a bit more time when fitting them possibly sanding the base down so that they fitted into the indents a bit better. But my excuse is that I was modelling on my mother in laws kitchen table,  I did not have tooling with me and I wanted to add something now.to the model so that it looked that I was making some progress. I will sand them down from the outside now.

A lot of sanding and scrapping I am now here. The areas around the small intakes in the last picture shows what I have done, not brilliant but better than what is was like. I have also added a few more parts including the foreplanes. I am thinking about weapons but the main thing that I am not sure about are the launchers for the Sidewinders and Skyflash missiles. Also I am also thining about the paint scheme, I have roughly changed the instruction paints to Humbrol ones apart from the undersides colour. Does anyone know what this might be?

Nice progress again :)

For the underside colours Two Bobs decals recommend Hu-122 alongside Hu-33, 117, 120, and 187 for the upper surfaces.

Is that not for the splinter camo, as I am doing the boring Grey one?

Another small update. I have added the U/C, something that I do not noramlly do at this stage, but I felt that it would be better especially as it is slightly more complicated than usual and I was not sure how it would go together after the U/C had been painted. It was whlst fitting the nose U/C that I noticed that the torque link was mis formed, so I am going to try and manufacture one from plasti-card. I have also fitted the upper air brakes and the windcreen in readiness for painting. The lower airbrakes had the holes drilled slightly deeper than as depicted, a few not quite in the right place. Last two photos a bit blurry, so I will try and do them again at a later date.

Better pictures now added.
