bianfuxia
My first build was a quickie - the Chinese sub posted many pages back in this fantastic group build. This model is probably that sub's direct adversary. This is the "Fen Yang", the Republic of China Navy (ie Taiwan) guided missile frigate 934 which in a previous life was in the US Navy. It's a Knox class ASW frigate, originally armed with the gun, the Phalanx, and the ASROC launcher modified in Taiwanese service to carry 2 Harpoons in the ASROC launcher and 10 SM-1 SAM missiles in single launchers mounted on that rear deck. I scratch-built that out of plastic card based on online images. You can see it in the build thread: The base kit was AFV Club's 1/700 Knox Class Frigate, which comes with decals for some USN and ROCN ships. As far as I can tell, AFV Club is a Taiwanese company. Here are the pics, thanks for looking:
bianfuxia
If this one looks familiar, it's because several of us built cruisers from this family of pre-war Japanese ship. Mine is the IJN Natori. It was built in 1922 and sunk in 1944 by a US submarine. It had 7 x 5.5 inch guns in single turrets and 4 twin torpedo launchers, two forward and easy to see and two to the rear in the opening just forward of the aeroplane deck. It's the 1/700 Tamiya kit. bianfuxia
I really like this little ship. There's something cool about the era just before guided missiles - ships with essentially WW2 armament but with modern (for the 50s/60s sensors). This is the JMSDF Harusame. According to wikipedia, it was designed with ASW in mind but came with such a heavy gun armament that it did pretty well at anti-air so was used as an all purpose destroyer. I built it in its later configuration with the modern triple torpedo mounts midships and the big variable depth sonar at the back. Apart from that it has the three big 5 inch guns and a pair of twin 3-inch AA mounts (the forward one has a weather shield). Harusame served right through the Cold War - 1959-1989. This is the awesome 1/700 Skywave kit. The build thread is here:
bianfuxia
This is the JMSDF's Landing Ship Tank, the Osumi or Ohsumi. By configuration, it's more a Landing Ship Dock than an LST, as it has the well deck but no bow doors to actually beach-land. There are three in the Japanese navy. Osumi, the lead ship, entered service in 1998. Although they look like mini-carriers, only the marked rear flight deck is really usable for aircraft. The front deck is vehicle parking, as you can see in some of the photos. The ship can carry two hovercraft, and has decks inside for vehicles as well as space for troops and command facilities. It's got two Phalanx guns for self defence. This is the really cool 1/700 Tamiya kit. My boxing didn't come with any vehicles - I scrounged them from other Skywave sets. It comes with two Chinooks, but again I used one from a Skywave kit. There is another Tamiya boxing that comes with a huge fleet of vehicles and a clear flight deck so you can see inside. I decided to make my flight deck removable so you can see inside, and I also managed to make the rear dock door functional. Here is the build thread:
bianfuxia
This is the JMSDF Satsuma, a Miura class LST which served between 1977 and 2002. It could carry about ten tanks or 200 troops, and had a twin 3 inch gun up front and a twin 40mm Bofors on the tail. It also had two larger landing ships launched by the big crane and two little ones on davits at the back. There were three in the class. It's the wonderful little 1/700 Pit Road kit. Here is the build thread. The vehicles came from a few different Skywave sets. The doors couldn't be opened at sea, but the kit didn't allow them to be functional. My favourite thing about this ship is the complicated bridge area.
bianfuxia
Last of all, here is my 1/700 PLAN "Handan", a Type 054A+ guided missile frigate. The name is pronounced closer to Hun Dun (where each syllable rhymes with "sun"). Handan is a city in Hebei province. China has 30 of these frigates in current service. Handan is brand new, just a few years into commission. It's armed with the Buk SAM system in a vertical launch system, from the same family as the one that brought down the Malaysian airlines flight over Ukraine. It also has 8 SSMs, anti-submarine rockets (at the bow ahead of the gun), a 3 inch main gun and a pair of 7-barrel 30mm self defence guns. There is a hangar for a Z-9 helicopter which can carry torpedoes. This is the Dream Model kit in 1/700. Dream Model is a Chinese company and it's a nice kit. I also used the Dream Model PE set - just my second time to use PE on a build. Don't look too close! Here's the build thread: Here it is with a Type 74 corvette, also a Dream Model kit. And here just for fun is a naval formation we probably would never see: Chinese, Japanese and Taiwanese ships all sailing together... (all these ships I built during this GB). Thanks for following and looking!
Doccur
Special Hobby 1/48 Supermarine Seafire MK.II Hi all, Just scraping in before the deadline is this clipped wing, shark-mouthed Seafire. Build went together fairly well but as with most special hobby builds a bit of fettling and filler was required. Decals went down a treat, but the stencils were a bit of a chore! Aircraft was fairly heavily weathered as these were well used beasts. I hope you enjoy! Ash
