Phantom FGR2, XV498, 92 Squadron.

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Here is my recently completed 1/48 Revell (Hasegawa) Phantom FGR2 in the markings of 92 Squadron, based at RAF Wildenwrath. Built as part of my 'RAF QRA through the years' project, you can see the build thread from page 5 onwards here

Extras used included Quickboost seats, Eduard & Airwaves etch, QMT FOD inserts, New Ware mask and a Flightpath ladder. Decals are a mixture of Xtradecal and Revell. Paints are from MRP and the missiles are all from a Tamiya F-14 kit.

Very nice, and great contrast to the F-4F!

Cheers!

That looks great, what MRP colours did you use (I didn't know they had modern RAF colours in their range)?

Thanks Duncan. I used MRP-374 'Light Aircraft Grey' and MRP-373 'Camouflage Grey.' The inner wing surfaces had a drop of dark grey added to the Camouflage Grey. Nose cone is Tamiya Medium Sea Grey with a few drops of white.

Spot on that, great job. How did you find the join between the wing sub assembly and the fuselage aft of the nosewheel bay? I’m  on with mine and it’s a devil of a job. There’s a whacking gap and a step that would equate to about six inches on a full sized aircraft.

Thanks mate. I had a bit of a gap but wasn't too bad. A bit of styrene sheet popped in and some filler sorted it, was quite an easy fix.

This is an excellent build and one that I am grateful to you for presenting on Britmodeller.

It's of particular interest to me as I was an airframe mechanic on 92 Squadron in the 1980's and worked on this very aircraft. You have captured the look of a working Toom really well and I the 'aircraft armed' sign, Nav's ladder and base really sets it off nicely.

You have just taken me back 35 years and I thank you for it.

Regards

Mike

Thanks Mike. Always great to hear from those who worked on machines depicted on the site.
