Hi Folks,

what type of radar is this?  Does anyone have the dimensions and/or a plan of one please?

This image shows one, of two, onboard HMS Ark Royal IV,

Grateful for any help in identifying the dimensions on this as I hope to scratchbuild one.

Cheers

It's a height finding radar. A quick search on Google using those words produced photos of many different types all of very similar configurations. You'd have to pour over all the photos to pick the one you need. However, I'm pretty sure someone on this Forum will know the specific type.

That's great, thanks for identifying this for me.  At least I now know what type;  now, does anyone have a source for the dimensions?  I need to build two, plus the rotating base for each.

Thanks again

The reflector is 14.5ft by 5ft (something you can check against known dimensions of the ship as e.g., in the pic above). Orthographic views of such installations are very difficult to find.... but the pic from the HSNA pdf could be used to make an artist impression of the installation. Plus painstakingly going over pics of all ships that might carry this set trying to get a better view from the rear. You know, the usual casual R&D. Fortunately this is a radar set so people are probably not standing in front of it blocking the view...

I agree, however I have looked through the two hundred or so photo's that I have found so far and none show this detail.  The photo's are either taken upwards from the flight deck (as in the image in my original request) or from a considerable distance.  Hence my request for assistance on this as I seem to have exhausted my ability.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks John,  I hadn't noticed that zoom icon, that should help considerably with my calculating the shape and size of the type 983.

I have had better luck with the type 984 radar.

Data sheet on the AQT aerial fitted to the Type 983

foeth’s dimensions are virtually spot on.

And to Type 983 radar itself

This is is a great resource on RN radars and aerials generally

Type 983 height finder was generally paired with Type 982 for direction. The latter had two aerial types. The first was a stacked cheese arrangement, later replaced with a hay rake aerial. The pairing first appeared on Eagle in 1951, then the Centaurs.
